in one of his interviews Dave told a story how he quibbled with his Dad as a young kid that being a comedian is better than being a teacher like his Dad. Little did he know then that he will become one of the most incredible teachers out there. Through his jokes, his wisdom, his attitude to many issues of our current world he teaches us how to be humble, how to be authentic and to laugh at ourselves. I love this man. His wisdom and his great heart are gifts to this world.
I met him about two weeks ago. So down to earth; He thanked us for being fans and told me I have a beautiful family. For sure that memory will stick with us. Guy was like one of my fucking heroes back in the day.
He has freedom of expression. By leaving we see he has it due to pc. If he was white, then he'd know how the totalitarianism would feast on his bones. There would be no money to discuss. Going hungry would be the focus. Glad Dave got his end financially sorted.
I love reading something like this. It shows that there are genuine people and also people that genuinley appreciate what that means to them. May whatever you believe rain blessings on you.
@@JohnSmith-yd5wq He didn't make millions though. Original contract for his show was for 6 figures because he was still a D list celebrity making a pitch for an experimental show. He walked away from the contract extension that was worth millions. However, he did get paid millions for his work over a decade later.
Off course. He was virtually working for free which would be the actual stupid thing to do. Bullying the bully by going public is the best revenge. You know how corporations care more about their reputation than anything.
@@markcortez5685 youre missing the point. he isnt a hippie by anymeans. money is not the most important thing where you would give up your values. money comes and goes and after basic needs and charity we still have money left over. for someone thats on minimum wage 10k p.a will make a massive difference but for someone on mid to high wage it wont change shit. i changed my career from a higher paying job to a lower paying increased work demand but more fulfilling career
What does saying "low key" have to do with anything in your sentence. It doesnt make sense. You could have easily left that out and you sentence would have been entirely more accurate. That's phrase actually throws the meaning of the sentence way off, before its brought back to a normal structure. You're a moron, stop using that phrase because you heard you're favorite idiot entertainment personality use it incorrectly themselves.
@@iridium8341 you're both right actually. Yes every time we recall a memory we reconstruct it, so details can change, be omitted, be added, etc. But it's also true that when you reminisce on past joyful events, it gives you joy as well. There science behind that as well.
It only worked for Dave because he was such a likable and relatable comedian. He had so much cache with the public that he was able to weaponize it. He couldn't win in court but he could win in public. Good things happen to men who do good things. A truth teller was saved by telling the truth.
@@JohnSmith-yd5wq obviously you are unaware of the details. Dave Chappelle produced 500 million dollars, comedy central told him that the money made far exceeded the scope of the contract so they were not going to pay him the 50% as stated in the contract. No, they would pay him 50 million, 10%. They also told him that if he left without taking that deal they would ruin him. Dave said no and hopped on a plane from L.A. to Ohio. By the time he landed in Ohio stories about him smoking crack head already begun to surface. If contracts were truly infallible lawyers would not make as much money as they do.
@@JohnSmith-yd5wq Originally, he didn't make millions because the original contract was before the show became a hit. Several people involved with the show confirmed this, they barely got paid for the 2 seasons because it started as an experiment with a C/D list celebrity. The show was 2.5 seasons in and they were negotiating an extension; at this point, the show was a huge hit so he had some leverage during negotiations. The reason he stepped away was because they wanted him to tone down his show and language to attract more sponsors and a wider audience. He walked away because he wanted the freedom to do his comedy his way. He's doing the same thing now. While other people are afraid of being canceled, he keeps doing his comedy his way.
Ikr he could talk all day and I would gladly listen!!! I may need to record it so I could play it back just in case I missed something!! He would be the coolest mentor to life!!
He dropped a few gems that stuck out to me in just this clip alone, like the difference/contrast between the “court of law and court of public opinion” or the “when you’re cold your phone don’t ring too often” and he’s got me over here on the edge of tearing up. I’m so thankful he’s not corrupted by his well deserved financial earnings, a true bare-bones artist that flipped a very challengingly large platform into a fine art stretched canvas, turning talent into amazingly profound art. A nontoxic man of virtue that understands wanted doesn’t mean valued. Please never change, Dave.
What an amazing person. While in Ohio, at a Starbucks at 9pm wearing an In-&-Out t-shirt, Dave taps me on the shoulder and asks where he can get a Double-Double. Chatted for a bit and went on our way. Great human

@@metamorphicme9378I’m admire Dave’s intelligence, wit, communication skills, ability to observe life in a deeper manner than myself, vocabulary, and many other things and none of it has to do with his race. I’m sure others of all races feel the same.
I think more than his wits is his willingness. It's fascinating how few people continue learning, or even reading outside of school. Your brain acts as a muscle, it can atrophy.
I missed David in my small sleepy hometown doing a comedy gig. He invited the audience out to the pub afterwards and just hung out with people. A true legend.
yeah he knew he lost legally but public outcry/opinion helped him pull off a miracle, given he wanted his fair share and principle to get what he was owed. To put into perspective, imagine any sitcom where the staff doesn't make royalty money once it goes into syndication. You can tell by the way he talks, despite his wealth, he isn't entitled/greedy. It's a great tightrope to walk.
Dave's biggest talent is his ability to remain thoughtful, principled and seemingly very authentic through all his fame. That's saying something because his talents are well documented and plentiful.
Yes which is why he's so beloved and I personally use to use his integrity as inspiration in my own life. However he's sold out by his recent actions. For example....they probably told him we'll give you ur show rights back if you go promote our agenda...which is why he started adding anti Trump jokes and BLM propaganda and his last special he literally didn't even say a joke he just incited violence
@@Byronic19134 maybe it's you that lack understanding of why people are attracted to black lives matter forget about communism startup and Soros funding but have empathy on why you blacks and other kids would be drawn to it. @Nick Traeger in all fairness I posted my original comment before listening to the entire podcast. I'm also disappointed that people I respect(ed) are buying into turning the tables of discrimination instead of trying to move forward together. As the God-awful-father of anti-racism, Ibram Kendi says, "the only remedy to past discrimination is current discrimination and the only remedy to current discrimination is future discrimination". That sounds an awful lot like an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind and it punishes my children of something they are not guilty of. To me, that makes no sense and only serves to divide us against ourselves. People that don't support BLM are not pro-racism they are pro-thoughtful discussion and resent the aggressively enforced inability to engage in one.
"I got overwhelmed with this idea that none of my information was first hand. I just read it in books or heard it from friends and I was eager to just see something for myself. " One of the most reflective and introspective quotes I've heard. Pure self-awareness.
The fact that Joe lit up a stogie to make Chappelle feel more comfortable while smoking a cigarette is a hidden boss move. One of the many reasons his interviews are as intriguing as they are is that he is able to make his interviewees open up on a different level. Chappelle is the goat.
He's a stud. He's ballsy. He doesnt take no shit from anyone. He smokes his stogie anywhere he wants! He don’t have to find a hideout place, like you! Oh ho!
"I kinda entrenched this philosophy that my memories are some of the most valuable things that I have. These first hand experiences. Can't take that away from me. If I reminisce on a nice day then it feeds you. Remembering something is neurologically almost identical, I've read, to experiencing it." - Dave Chappelle

For all the Dave Chapelle fans out there - if you haven't seen it, track down Dave's Inside The Actors Studio interview. He basically lays out everything that happened with Chapelle Show shortly after it all took place & he returned from Africa, and you can see how raw it is. It's a really compelling interview
You mean the one where he accurately called out Hollywood as a sick place only to basically return to Hollywood? (yes, Netflix is Hollywood... yes, Joe Rogaine is Hollywood EVEN IF he took his clownshow to Texas)
Only because he is a genius, and each sketch on the show was so incredible. He left us hanging out there wanting more. That is why he is a legend, and a recipient of the Mark Twain award. We need Dave now more than ever. He will say what people should be saying. Like a Greek philosopher, for our times.
What I love about Dave Chapelle is his amazing ability to teach and at the same time be so funny. Such a good decent human being, I applaud him and his talent!
Imagine edging yourself to the zenith of everything you ever dreamed about, It’s finally going to be a reality. Then imagine giving it all up only to fall to a depth of “failure” you can’t even conceptualize. And then after a decade of obscurity, you skyrocket back to heavens and become the most respect man in your field. Dave Chapelle’s journey is nothing short of legendary.
He never fell. We all sat anxiously waiting for more. When you are as endearing to as many fans as Dave is, it's hard to alienate yourself from everyone. I mean, for the sake of God, he literally can stop in his tracks anywhere and a crowd will gather to listen to him. And it has been like this since well before he left his show.
Just finished binging Chappelles show, been a fan of his stand up for a few years. Honestly one of my favourite people on earth, such a stand up & respectable dude
I love Dave's work! He's so unique and talented that there's nobody close! I'm glad he got to do it his way and that he's back! Love to see him do some movies again!
I REALLY appreciate the way Dave uses language. He is truly one of the most eloquent people to whom I've listened. MAN , THIS was a deep conversation! RESPECT!☺
Completely agree. Just jackpot sketch after sketch after sketch. Ashy Larry, I know Black People, Knee High Park, Black Bush, Rick James, Prince, Lil John, Tyrone Biggums on Fear Factor, Wayne effin Brady. Holy hell it was brilliant.
He was right in thinking that there is no way he could follow that season up successfully. No sketch show ever before or after will have the success chappelles show season 2.
This is fantastic to hear and perfect timing to have it pop up. I was having a rough morning this morning and after listening to this, it really puts things into perspective thank you Dave and Joe.
Every single time I see an Interview with Dave Chappelle I am more impressed. I think it is mainly because he does it without really trying to impress anyone. His grasp on what IS and ability to break it down I envy and respect immensely. I'm so happy to see the good guys win one.
Now he’s going to have his own podcast with Mos Def and one other man I’m not familiar with, but ya I’m excited to hear the ideas that bounce off of them
@@jnnx Ha ya, Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy was one of my favorite books so I loved him in the movie, and in early 2000s I saw him at two different music festivals but he was listed as Mos Def and not Black Star with Talib
I love these 2 men along with Bill Burr. Dave is the GOAT for sure. They all have great honesty, love and respect for life. Enjoy people, soak it up!! The world doesn't gift us with Dave Chappelles very often. Love him while we've got him!!
It sucks he has had so many dipshit conspiracy nuts & Fascist reich-wingers on his platform.. Even worse that he acts as if they have equally valid viewpoints as others like real scientists or doctors.
What’s crazy is that the Clayton Bigsby skit was in the first episode of Chappelle show. Dave wasn’t playing around he got straight to the point. Imagine someone trying to put out a show like Chappelle show nowadays. They would tarred and feathered, or I guess now a days they would just be cancelled and barred from any publicity. Sad times, nobody can take a joke anymore.

He rides his motorcycle around the area a lot, or at least he used to. It would not be crazy to see him ride down the street on it. Like oh hey, there’s Dave riding through again.
Dave Chappelle is a legend in every sense of the word. His popularity transcends the ability of others to cancel him, which allows him to only ever deliver the comedy he wants as he wants to.
He skin color combined with his popularity transcends the ability of others to cancel him. He would have been cancelled long time ago had he been white.
dave was the person that made me go into comedy, tbh i've only remembered when he came back, that i always knew he will come back, he's just a different story teller
Dave’s voice is maturing like a grungy wine. This generation that didn’t grow up in the early 2000’s of the chapelle show just can’t appreciate this evaluation of wisdom. We differ drastically on politics I’m sure, but man Dave is a national treasure.
The evolution of Chapelle has been great to watch for sure 👏🏼 I differ from him politically too, but it doesn’t stop me loving his comedy either! Politics should never be intertwined with entertainment, especially comedy, it’s supposed to be a release from all that shit!
Thoughtful is the first word that comes to mind when I think of Dave. Even more than funny, which is saying a lot given his immense comedic talent and output.
My group of friends that have been hanging out since middle school owe so much to Dave Chappelle. We watched the DVDs over and over back in high-school
I understood bitterness is quite cumbersome.. but everything after that sounded like Charlie Brown’s teacher talking. Can anybody translate the 2nd part?

I always re-watch this set Dave did in 2009 I think where he's in the midst of being blackballed and it's just incredible because it's a shitty quality but it's 4 hours of dave just riffing and talking about what's on his mind.
