Learn why all salts are NOT built the same and which one's you need to avoid!
SALT, we all use it. But have you noticed there are TONS of new salts on the market from pink salt to Himalayan salt? While these are great to use in the kitchen once in a while, Dr. Gundry says this should NOT replace your usual salt. In fact, these trendy new salts do not contain the health benefits that you need to live your longest, healthiest life. So in this episode, Dr. Gundry shares what these trendy salts lack that you need in your diet. Plus he reveals the only salt you should be using regularly and what benefits you can reap from it.

I’m a 65 y.o. black male. A few years ago, my primary care physician told me my blood pressure was too high and I should cut down on my salt. She wanted to put me on blood pressure medication. Instead I did my research and consequently I went on a low-carb diet with emphasis on eliminating highly processed foods and seed oils but I still maintained my salt level because I love salt😜. Within a couple of months my blood pressure was under control. As of yesterday 12 systolic/ 8 diastolic. 😊 I know, for the folks at AHA it’s still too high but I respectfully disagree. I also supplement with potassium and magnesium (and D3). In hindsight I think I had the beginning of an insulin resistance problem (pre-diabetic) and I nipped it in the bud with a proper diet.

My husband is a chef and says that regular salt is treated with bleach and is therefore unhealthy. Is this true? Should we be looking for unbleached salts treated with iodine instead? Also, what about the other ingredients found in some salts such as silicon dioxide, dextrose, calcium silicate, etc. (These are just a handful of the ingredients I have seen. I assume they are usually preservatives and anti-caking agents)? Thanks so much for all you do!

Hi Dr. Gundry, I got a few questions: My name is Vincent Koo, I am Chinese from Hong Kong and I am now living in Toronto, Canada. I have been following your Videos on RU-vid for many years, actually since your story about "big Ed" and the amazing compound Polyphenols and I am using some of your products. So, here are the questions: 1. White rice, if I soak overnight and then cook using pressure cooker, will that reduce or get rid of lectins? 2. How should I take Vitamins, do I need to take them separately or can I take them together, which ones can and which ones cannot? 3. Can I mix some of your powder supplements together or should I take them separately? 4. Lastly, other pill form supplements, should I take them separately and I can take them together? Finally, thank you Dr. Gundry for always looking out for me.

You don't need to soak white rice, just rince it out well. I pressure cook mine for 6 minutes and release it after 10 minutes. I've even left it in longer and always turns out perfect. 1 cup of rice to 1 and 1/4 cups of water. And I'm pretty sure you can take most supplements together, but not with certain medications. Vitamin B's can give you an upset stomach if taken without food.

I have liver disease and I manage a very palatable diet on under 2000mg sodium a day. I’m not in a hospital setting though. However, if palatable is what you’re going for, 2000mg is manageable. If salt/sodium balance for health reasons is ultimately the goal, it is achievable, but getting people to convert to lower salt in terms of ‘taste’ of food, is very much more difficult.. I had to, and the palate does adjust. Not always easy though. Also, lowering salt with or without advice can cause electrolyte imbalance, and this improves the instant you add salt back…. Finding personal levels takes time.

We appreciate Dr. Gundry but disagree on table salt 😢God designed our bodies to get MOST of the nutrients we need from the food we eat, assuming we’re eating a relatively balanced and healthy diet. Two nutrients we don’t get enough of from food are sodium and chloride, but the reason we need unrefined salt is because the body needs the other minerals that come with unrefined salt in nature to process the sodium and chloride properly and get the benefits from it. They all work together in the body in many ways.

I would imagine the added potassium iodide is generally synthetic. Iodine itself is a chemical element, so it doesn't matter much whether natural or not other than the fact that natural forms like seaweed fibers take more time to release in the body.

@rickd438
@rickd438 Год назад
You need salt in order for your cells to function properly. Most people who are so-called salt sensitive, need to do a couple of things. First: Drastically reduce your sugar/carb intake. Carbohydrates will cause your body to hang on to too much water. Consume less of it and you'll find your body will start to get rid of all the water. Many people have found success with a healthy keto diet. Second: You need to up your potassium intake big time. Start eating lots of leafy green veggies (2 good size salads a day). Salt and potassium work together to form what is called the sodium-potassium pump. If you don't have enough potassium in your cells your body will not expel the salt. You need any where from 2-4 times the amount of potassium to salt. Most people can salt their food to taste and not have to worry about eating bland food. Like Gundry said, either add it when you cook or add it after but not both. Very few of us are actually salt sensitive. These are the first things to do before any kind of medication. Medications actually deplete the things you need to turn this around. Don't forget exercise.

Everything I have read about iodine in salt pretty much agrees that the classic boxed iodized sodium chloride has lost so much of it's iodine content by the time it gets to table that it's still not enough. We used to use potassium iodide as a bread conditioner here in the U.S., but changed to potassium bromide in the 1970s...... which is oddly also when cancer rates began to rise, (Source: The Iodine Crisis) so I think it's worth considering using the salts that you like the taste of, and just supplementing iodine to RDA so you know you always get enough. (Also, if interested, look up staining oral tumors with Lugol's iodine solution to identify the cancer's edge, and the historical precedence of painting fibrous or tumorous breast tissue with iodine and seaweed rich in iodine.)

how did our ancestors and peoples before iodine hype and deficiency and all these non-sense lived for 1000s of years? Did they eat fortified iodine? The answer is NO. they had natural diets and somehow never had iodine deficient. Now comes the modern times and all the junk foods and additive and poisonous and altered foods in the 20th century and onward and then now we see deficiencies suddenly. Now we need to add iodine or else. So before the modern times the salt that was eaten did not have added iodine and yet people were fine. So what's really behind all these deficiencies and issues? Why is US and North Americans diet (US/Canada) is deficient in iodine and others essentials? What's the route cause?
@bubblybull2463
@bubblybull2463 Год назад
First time I whole heartedly disagree with you Dr Gundry! First of all, if you need salt to make your food palatable, then, believe me, you don’t KNOW how to cook ! Use wine, use mushrooms, use garlic, use any herbs and/or spices and you won’t even notice the lack of salt… In all actuality, we don’t need table salt, it’s a common misconception, what we need are “salts”, with an s at the end, which are minerals of many different sorts. Just like with sugar, we eat far too much table salt, it’s added in every product we buy and it’s just a trick industrials use to make things taste more intense. Salt is with sugar a disruptor of metabolism.

Then why have men historically fought over salt even risking their lives to obtain salty and the sweet. Why did our ancestors use more salt than we do nowadays without the major chronic disease issues of nowadays. We have receptors for salt/sugars and therefore we are innately hard wired to crave them
@bubblybull2463
@bubblybull2463 Год назад
@@pluto4D some people crave alcool, that doesn’t mean we have an inherent need for alcool. Your argument is fallacious and doesn’t have any medical reality. As for our ancestors need of salt, you might consider that they had some kind of a unfortunate shortage of fridges. As in : fridges didn’t exist yet. Yeah I know, this is surprising. Salt was used to keep meat edible for a much longer time than you seem to have been to school. But hey : it’s never too late 😉
@pluto4D
@pluto4D Год назад
@@bubblybull2463 Hey Mrs Doubtfire. An addiction is not the same as being genetically hardwired. Evey child is born with receptors for sweetness, saltiness and savory etc which is why we have a natural craving for flavoured drinks, foods (and condiments in moderation) otherwise we wouldn't want eat unless we're starving. Having watched travelling UK chef Rick Stein 🌐 cooking episodes, salt recipes are widespread across different cultures whether salts are from sea, land or salt bushes. Hence the biblical term use for godly persons 'salt of the earth' is because of it's want of value. It has nothing to do with your nonsense belief of salt being used only for preserving. While salt may temporarily increase blood pressure, restricting salt increases the production of aldosterone which can increase blood pressure. Ace inhibitors work in part by restricting aldosterone (ref Ray Peat PhD) Salt has many biological functions and if you can obtain natural mineralised salt with low detectable heavy metals then it's ok. Pink salts contain iron oxide and possible heavy metal overload depending where it's been mined. Excess iron is toxic and can cause diseases especially in the presence of highly oxidisable polyunsaturated fats that most of us have stored in our fat cells (predominantly from seed oil consumption) Its these inflammatory seed oil's free fatty acids that also interfere by competing with glucose for oxidation thus causing the chronic blood sugar issues. This is referred to as the Randle Cycle effect.
