This is how I adhered the glass onto my windows. Sorry this one get's a little technical, but fun for those of you like me who nerd out on this stuff.
You wouldn't believe it. It took me so long to find the right adhesive and now I am having trouble getting it. There is none left in the country (and not due until next year sometime). I have been hunting high and low for anyone who might have some sitting on a shelf. I have found JUST enough, but I waiting on my third delivery so it is a good time to do a build update.
In this video we have a look at the adhesive system and bonding process I used to stick the glass onto my windows. This turned out to be a lot more complicated than I imagined. Not only is there the physical strength of the adhesive to consider but then UV and reactance with the substrates. Luckily I managed to work it out and have an adhesive system that should be more than strong enough to hold my glass safely.
In fact it turns out that the strength of this adhesive and the surface area I have it can quite literally hold tons! Seriously! Then when you allow for a safety factor it can still safely hold hundreds of kilograms - my heaviest piece weighs around 30kg. How cool is that.
Anyway, next steps is to finish setting the glass onto my windows. Then I get to INSTALL them. I CAN'T WAIT.
Until next time. Don't hate... educate, and go build cool stuff.

Nicely done, you asked the right people, the right questions, then followed their instructions to the letter. You'll be right. I must add that it's brilliant that Sika has such an approachable tech branch. 👍

I honestly cannot speak highly enough of how helpful they were. For a global adhesives manufacturer to be so responsive and informative was incredible. And their stuff is glorious to work with. 100% recommend

Beautifully obsessive. The perks of working alone. I love that you do exactly what you envision.

Impressive how detail oriented you are to think of all those minute things or meticulous methods to achieve your goal. It is very clear to see that once you know what you will stop at nothing to get it just right. Keep up the awesome build, going to make for some gorgeous windows I'm certain!

Thank you Chris. I try to think of as much as possible. Much of what I'm doing I'm making up as I go so there is no blueprint on how it's done, or collective knowledge on optimum design. I just try to think about how they will last over time and what will go wrong so I can try design to it. Thank you for following along 😊

Great video Phil - it's really interesting learning more about all the processes you developed to get the end product you wanted and, as always, your attention to detail is very impressive. It sounds like Sika were very helpful as well fair play to them for that 👍🏻

Needed attention to detail on these ones, and it's help give me confidence that it'll be ok. Sika were amazing and will certainly be dealing with them more.

hi phil, really enjoying your struggles - in a good way ;-) nice to see the crane made an appearance for the windows rather than the initial muscle power. as many have commented, your attention to detail is great and much appreciated! just discovered your channel and finished the binge watching before throwing this out regarding your moisture concern for the sliding roof. agree the metal roof with tabs style could be effective, though curious if you have looked at pond liner as a membrane (looks like EDPM pond liner in Australia) before placing the metal on? hope your new year is off to a productive start!

Welcome to the team! So glad to see you on the journey. Thank you so much for checking out the vids. Was good to get the crane up again. That was the best investment. Great thought about the sliding roof. It's a real challenge. The membrane is a good idea however it creates a new problem of what to do with the moisture sitting on the membrane. It'll create constant damp under the iron which will promote rust but also need to drain it. Problem is that will end up inside. My goal instead is to direct the moisture away and not even get that far in. I'm hoping standing seam joints are sufficient. Moving onto that next so keen to see how it turns out. Happy New Year mate. Off to a great start here.

you may have answered this.. however... what was the purpose of the brass angle.. was it just aesthetics ?

I discovered your video channel on Christmas Day and theses videos are my perfect Christmas present! My level of detail! I am really impressed by your skill level. So many questions but my first... how come you opted for single glazed?

Wow thank you! I really appreciate your words and so grateful you are finding then valuable. Great question. There are a couple reasons. 1. Weight. To do the windows I wanted safely it would have been extremely heavy. 2. I'm in mild parts of Australia so not critical 3. Complexity. To build myself would have been very hard but even if I got them made I really wouldn't have been able to do the design I did. The next video will be with the windows installed and I'll talk about some of the design features such as I've now got shelves all around my house 4. Double glazing reduces thermal transfer but doesn't stop other issues such as heating via infrared from the sun. My plan will be to do honeycomb blinds which seem to have great thermal performance. And well at the end of the day it may turn out to be a bad idea, time will tell it's all an experiment

Thanks for your reply. We are not so lucky with the weather here in London! I am normally working out R values and thermal bridging! Your window construction made me think of flat roof “skylights”. You have inspired me to have a play around with a vertical application similar to this profile... images.app.goo.gl/eaYgMF7hQhSfNiBK9 These types of profiles appear also to rely on adhesives rather than a “frame”... images.app.goo.gl/qoU2j3D3JLCEydf5A What is your background? Looking forward to seeing more of your approach.

@@MrSoakitup oh yeah if I was somewhere else I would for sure be looking at different windows.. That's a very cool design. I really like it. It uses a T profile aluminum which would support the window then held in with adhesive. That's better than my design. The only reason I didn't do that was because I'm doing brass and that was just an issue in itself. VHB tape is the way to go if you can not as strong as the adhesive I used but stupid strong and so much easier to use. Love to see how you go making some. I'm very keen to do my own double glazing and improve the window design
