For years during the lead up to it Hitler was trying to use the massive buildings constructed and their supposedly elite athletes as proof the Arian race was superior. The US showed up and SMOKED them. Especially Jesse Owens, a runner who earned four gold medals, beating many Germans in the games. This was a massive blow to Hitler’s ego/propaganda campaign because a black man from the inferior “mixed race” America whooped their asses. as a seattle resident i feel like i need to clarify why they brought up the olympic rower and rowing in front of hitler. the group of young men on the UW rowing team back in the 30’s was relatively new compared to competition, long story short they made a huge national run when competing for which team would represent the USA in the olympics hosted in germany. it was a big deal because the underdog college team from seattle overcame and beat the german team in their own country: theres even footage of hitler from this event looking furious the americans had won
