ŠKODA AUTO starts production of the platform
electrical MEB in Mladá Boleslav
New strategic step taken by the Czech manufacturer in the
transformation of an automotive site into an electromobility hub
About 130 million euros invested in the new production line
The Mladá Boleslav plant is the only European production site for SEM batteries
for Volkswagen Group outside Germany
Batteries produced in Mladá Boleslav will be used in ŠKODA models,
Volkswagen, Audi and SEAT based on the MEB platform
Mladá Boleslav, May 18, 2022 - ŠKODA AUTO has started the assembly of batteries for
Volkswagen Group's electric vehicles based on the MEB platform.
The car manufacturer's main plant thus becomes the sole site of
production of SEM batteries in Europe, outside of Germany. About 250
employees will soon assemble more than 250,000 platforms per year on this line
of production. In addition to ŠKODA vehicles, these electric floors will be
also installed in Volkswagen Group models based on the platform
SEM.
Christian Bleiel, Head of Components Production at ŠKODA AUTO,
adds: “Our new battery assembly line for the MEB platform establishes
new standards in efficiency, automation, precision, cleanliness and
scanning. For the commissioning of the production line, we rely on
the know-how and experience that we have acquired over the decades and on our
highly motivated and qualified staff. In collaboration with Volkswagen Group
Components and our partner companies and suppliers, we are taking a step
important in the transition from the combustion engine to electromobility by manufacturing
electric platforms. We will take the next step at the end of 2023, when we
will launch the second phase of expansion, which will allow us to produce more than 380
000 electric platforms per year in total. »
The headquarters of the Czech car manufacturer is the only production site in Europe, in
outside Germany, where the MEB platforms of our vehicles are assembled
electric: the smallest version with eight modules has a capacity of 55 kWh and the version
average with nine modules stores 62 kWh. The largest battery with 12 modules has
a capacity of 82 kWh. In addition to the modules, each containing 24 cells, the
components of an SEM battery system include an envelope with a system
integrated cooling system, a module regulation system and the connections
electricity required for operation. ŠKODA AUTO also manufactures other
electronic components in Mladá Boleslav; high voltage traction batteries which
are used in the SUPERB iV, OCTAVIA iV PHEV and in hybrid vehicles
rechargeable batteries from other brands of the group have been produced here since autumn 2019.
The transformation of the company is accelerating thanks to this new production line.
As part of its NEXT LEVEL - ŠKODA STRATEGY 2030 strategy, the manufacturer
automotive plans to produce electric vehicles or electronic components
at its three production sites by the end of the decade. The objective is to preserve the
long-term existing jobs and create new ones at the same time. Until then,
the company hopes to have raised the share of all-electric car sales by
Europe between 50 and 70%, depending on market trends. To achieve this, ŠKODA AUTO
will continue to electrify its range over the next few years. By 2030, the range
will include at least three other all-electric models, all of which will be more
small and cheaper than the ENYAQ iV.
