This tutorial video will teach you how to safely flash new firmware to FrSky receivers. This will allow you to unlock new features and troubleshoot problems as well as expand compatibility with new FPV flight controller features.
I first tried flashing to a FrSky R-XSR receiver in order to have KISS LUA Scripts work. However, the procedure is the same for many other receivers including the X4R-SB, XM+, XSR and others. Some need to be flashed via the SBUS port instead of the Smart Port, but for the most part it's all the same.

Serious props for this. Since I had the Taranix x7. I had to make a special cable for that controller, everything else was the same.

I could not for the life of me to get the receiver to update using the pins in module bay. But in bottom of radio ( I'm using QX7S) there's a port that servo cable fits in. Tried that one and it worked great. Thought I'd pass that on.

This video was hugely helpful getting my RXSR updated. However, im running KISS and a RDQ Mach2 vtx, and though i can adjust everything related to the FC, i cant adjust the vtx settings. Any ideas about how to get Mach2 working in this situation?
@PinchTune
@PinchTune 6 лет назад
The Mach 2 works with KISS. You just need to run the KISS LUA. But I tested it with a KISS CC and it took me a few tries, but I got it working brilliantly.

Note the update on the EdgeTX system. I couldn't upload new software to RXSR, only reverting the radio back to OpenTX helped

Thanks for this vid! I bought 3 brand new ones and before binding one I updated the FW and it didn't bind. I tried the other 2 and they both bound properly. I reflashed it now with the same FCC file you selected and it now works. FRSKY has a newer file uploaded you want to use the one uploaded 2017-10-09 at the writing of this msg 04/29/18

Thanks for the message. I'm glad tit help! I didn't know they had a newer file. Too bad, cause I just built another quad and use the same FW from the video.

hello, i have the same receiver and i have a question, i only use this receiver in my quad, and i want to know which cable do you use ,, sbus_in(white) or sbus_out/cppm? i don't know why, but mine is binded correctly with my taranis but when the drone doesn't controller board doesn't receive anything
@PinchTune
@PinchTune 6 лет назад
You might be using the CPPM/SBUS in. Make sure to use the OUT. Doesn't matter if you use green, yellow or white for that. Just make sure you've connected it correctly. The IN is only to use it as a slave or redundancy Rx.

ok, thanks fow your answer

Why would you not plug the power into the 6v pin, so that it wouldn't matter if you're running 2s or 3s?

good question, hopefully, the answer is not a fried one

FYI, if you have a Frsky Q X7, and the RXSR receiver, the RXSR comes with the proper cable to flash the receiver without modifying the servo connector (its actually keyed so you cant plug it in upside down in the S.Port on the bottom of the radio)
@PinchTune
@PinchTune 6 лет назад
Ah... No wonder. I modified the cable because I noticed the pinout didn't match the 9XD pinout. Guess the Q X7 is different. Good to know.

so what if I don't have a Taranis transmitter , I have a few other transmitters Frsky i6 and FPVBETA plus a irangeX , Thanks for the video but it should say "how to flash with a TARANIS"!
@MGL83
@MGL83 4 года назад
Ok, but is there a way to flash it without a Taranis? I have Turnigy 9X and it doesn't have any SD capabilities. Can I flash it through an FC connected to PC?
@PinchTune
@PinchTune 4 года назад
Oooff. I don't know. Might be worth a shot... but you'd have to be willing to live with it if you brick it.

where do I get that damn cable to connect r xsr to the TX? Can't update as I dont have the cable ...
@PinchTune
@PinchTune 4 года назад
I made it. It's nothing more than a servo connector. You don't even need the plastic end. You can just shrink tube each of the little connectors individually. Just search up servo plugs in any traditional hobby shop. They are everywhere.

Would I still need telemetry wire from esc to FC for this to work? (Kiss 24a Kiss FC)
@PinchTune
@PinchTune 6 лет назад
Depends. This is just based on WHAT telemetry you want or need. The purpose of the flashing of the R-XSR is so that the LUA scripts work. On other receivers, like the XM+, it's to change the channel on which RSSI is reported. Using ESC telemetry on KISS is a whole other thing. Basically, if you don't use it, you can still get Voltage telemetry via the KISS FC and smartport... and I'm pretty sure the LUA scripts for tuning will still work for the most part. However, ESC telemetry will also add current draw, temperature, RPMS and other cool things to track via an OSD.

PinchTune I’ve updated the R-XSR so I can have the lua scripts on my X7, but it’s still not coming up at all. I’m guessing I need telemetry on all ESC’s to the FC for this to work. It’s all that’s left for me to do I think. Anyways, thank you for the video on how to update the rx, you made it very simple👍
@PinchTune
@PinchTune 6 лет назад
I wish I could tell you for sure. I'm using the R-XSR on KISS CC, so the telemetry stuff is already connected, unlike with the KISS FC where you have to do it manually. I used to not use it, but now I highly recommend you do. So, definitely worth doing even if it isn't the solution to your telemetry problem.
@a.i.thinker4059
@a.i.thinker4059 6 лет назад
PinchTune turns out telemetry wires to ESC’s is not necessary to use KISS LUA script. Needed to dig deeper in Flyduinos website to find to proper file, All good now! Such an awesome feature!

quick question ... i have flashed my fc with beta flight .. what lua scripts should i use ?
@PinchTune
@PinchTune 6 лет назад
Hi, you’re going to have to look around for that one. I use LUA scripts only for KISS. On Betaflight, any changes I need I do through the OSD, so no need for LUA scripts for my use.
@kkkkkkkkkk421
@kkkkkkkkkk421 6 лет назад
i mean , kiss fc with Betaflight :D
@PinchTune
@PinchTune 6 лет назад
Ahhhhhh. You definitely caught me there. I've never put BF on a KISS FC. But I suspect that the same BF LUA should work. Given you won't be using OSD to make changes... I suggest to check either on the BF thread on RCGroups or on the GitHub repository for Betaflight. You should be able to find the right LUA there. In fact, I think it should even be in the BF Wiki.

What about the lbt?what is that for? Or which country only uses that?
@PinchTune

LBT is for Europe, basically. I didn't explain that well in the video.

Do you think the “phantom file” is there cause you didn’t empty the trash?
@PinchTune
@PinchTune 6 лет назад
Nope. There is a Phantom file for every single file on the SD Card. Seems to be a Mac thing. This includes all the sounds files, etc.

I use Blue-Harvest. It's a program that will delete all those ._ files off of the SD Card. There are some free programs available too but Blue-Harvest has worked the best for me.

"today we are going to do something we dont do often enough, flashing the firmware" Do you what to flash your firmware all the time ????
@PinchTune

Then don't do it. Why are you complaining to me for?

And.. I have a unique problem.. I download the firmware to my X9D+ SE, flash external module to an (3 now to be exact) R-XSR receiver (wires swapped), "writing firmware", green light only, no blue light, and no bind. Try the "hold the button for 4 seconds to change to SBUS, nothing. Bricked receiver. Download the exact same firmware to my QX7, get an "S-Port Flash" option, "write firmware" (to the same X9D+ bricked receivers), blue (SBUS) light, binds with the X9D+ SE, full telemetry, LUA script, no problems. I've asked "why doesn't it work with the X9D+" on every forum and FB page I know of, no clues.. My grand FPV mystery..
