Treat yourself with a pliers like “Christmas tree” removal tool if you do this job so often. Thank you for the content!

I have a 2013 Ecoboost with 180K, it started to startup rattle at 150K after the truck sat for more than 24 hrs. SOLUTION: On startup, push gas pedal all the way to floor, crank for 2-3 seconds, truck wont start but, will pump oil up to phasers and then stop cranking after the 2-3. It will then start up normally with no rattle. Found this on RU-vid, IT WORKS!

This is true, but most people that spent $60k+ on a truck don't want to have to do that

Please set up a payment link. I want to donate some money as an appreciation for this 3.5 ecoboost content. I just purchased 19 Expedition Limited on insurance auction, and sure enough there is a rattle on cold start😟 Before I had 2007 Expedition with exact same issue(( I got stuck on a road-trip with my family (holiday weekend). I had to fly my family back home, rent a hotel for a 3 days, as there was no mechanic available to replace the sprockets as well as waiting on parts. In addition the job cost me $3200. I would assume that 12 years is enough to fix the sprocket issue for such grand automotive company company or take responsibility and release a recall! I would use this 2019 Expedition for a couple of years, but Ford NO MORE just because the way they treat their customers! Lexus or possibly Grand Wagoner would me my next choice)

I got a 2019 3.5 EcoBoost with 71,000 miles and had rattling noises at start up recently. And now while I'm driving seems sluggish and in traffic when coming to a stop it shutters like gonna shut off. Only way that I counter is to pit in manual and shift as I'm going. But have to have it over 2000 rpms to keep the engine light from coming on and blinking. When stopped I throw it in neutral and high idle it. Need to find a solution so help..... haha. Thanks for the video. Very intuitive and detailed. Good job

Hmm, that could be a different issue. I would get the codes checked first. The rattling noise on cold start is the phasers, but the idle/driveability problem sounds like something else. Also check your oil level and make sure it's full, had a few with some driveability issues due to low oil level also.

@@fordmd9704 the code I get was a P0394. Cam shaft position sensor. But there r 4 of them.
@fordmd9704
@fordmd9704 3 года назад
@@Rod-vj6dd that usually means that the engine is sensing that it is out of time. Even though it is a circuit code, I have had several with that code and it is not electrical. The camshaft is out of time in relation to the crankshaft. I would take it in and have this verified of course, if it goes too far out of time you can damage the engine/bend valves.

@@fordmd9704 ok. I will get it c'n and c what they say. Thank u and keep making good videos for us to use as references. U know what would've been good was a start up of that engine while it was cold to hear that shutter sound. But all in all it was a good 2 part video. Thanks

Any chance you have a part list of your repair, or a kit you'd recommend?
@alkalk8938

Do you recommend that a person pay for any other parts while the tech is in the engine, say a water pump for example. My 3.5 has 53k and will be getting g repaired under warranty.

2019 F150. Did not have rattle at 30k, 40k, and 50k dealer checkups. Each time dealer told me they were not recommending re-flash unless a problem due to trucks coming back right after with other problems (shudder). Truck had 59600 mi when rattling started. Called dealer for appointment to check, earliest was a month out and he told me not to worry as long as they saw it before 12/31/2022. Now another dealer and FMC tells me that is BS, needs new VCT and no warranty coverage available because over 60k.

Ford lies to avoid honoring their warranty obligations. It's intentional and they lie and cheat in other situations too. They scammed me in a very horrible way.

Help, I have a 2021 F150 2.7 with phaser cold start rattle at 1,400 miles. Am I doomed to have problems with this engine? Dealer told me it's a 1/2 day job to replace a phaser ( hard to believe). Can I expect to have oil leaks and other problems or is this usually pretty successful? I'm definitely trading it in before the warranty is up. Is Ford offering an extended warranty when they have to tear an engine apart with so little miles?

I haven't had this issue on a 2.7, only 3.5.

Where do I get the special tools you use in both videos? Thanks... My wife bought a 2019 Expedition with 60k miles 3 months ago. It was a rental. The Carfax showed the ECU was reprogrammed and when she first got it there was no rattle. Rattle is real bad now. I told her I wouldn't buy it but told her if she bought it to buy the extended warranty. The truck is going to the dealer Monday. I normally work on all my own vehicles once out of factory warranty but shes working in another state currently and I can't get to it.

Problem is that as far as lawsuits go, it doesn't effect vehicle performance or emissions, not safety issue so hard to get that done.

Question for you, is all the maintenance discussion about changing the oil more frequently (every 3-5k), and towing less to none really have any impact on this issue, or is it just a poor design by Ford? I’m curious to just get some feedback from a real Ford mechanic that is doing this all the time. Thanks!
@fordmd9704
@fordmd9704 3 года назад
Honestly I think it's just a bad design. The gen 1 3.5 ecoboost had the same issue with the rattling, but they would last at least 80-90k before they would do it, not 10k miles after everything is replaced like these gen 2's. Ford just posted yesterday a new cust. Satisfaction recall for pcm programming for the cold start rattle, they don't tell us what they change, but we'll see if it helps I guess

@@fordmd9704 Should I ask my dealership about this recall? 2017 F150 3.5 eco with about 120k on the odometer. Also do you think this issue will factor into long term longevity? Way out of warranty and wondering if I should just let it ride for another year or so and hopefully there will be a better solution. Thanks
@fordmd9704
@fordmd9704 3 года назад
@@kylevanderstoep7005 if your VIN is eligible for the recall you will get a letter in the mail. Or you can call and give your service advisor your VIN and they can check. Long term wise I'm not sure if wear is worse, these seem to just cause noise. The Gen 1's would jump time, haven't seen that yet on gen 2's

Great video... what is it that actually causes the rattle on these phasers??
@BORIKKEN
@BORIKKEN 3 года назад
Not enough oil pressure when start up, shorten the life of the VCT.
@pacman1789

They come loose on the cam shaft. The rattle you here is the loose VCT phasers rattling against it.

The techs get paid about 10hrs for this job when it is warranty, and about 15 or 18 when the customer pays. Strange...like ford encourages the tech to come up with any reason possible to say that it is the customers fault for whatever failure on these vehicles.
