IMHO, you are the best source of info for Ford owners. Lucky me this time, my problem is only the steering column. I've watched both your videos, this one, and the one about steering columns. I have subscribed a long time ago, clicked the bell and all, and watched and commented on many of your videos. I do most of the work on my vehicles myself, but I always check with you first, because you are that good. Thank you!!! There is a TON of value in what you are doing, and I admire and appreciate how precise and concise you are with mechanics. You are making the world a better place with each video you post. Thank you!!!
Ford, should do a total recall on this steering issue. In my learned opinion, this is just an accident or multiple freeway fatalities waiting to happen.
Man thank you so much for that valuable info. something to keep an eye out for with my truck. please any further info on your findings on future problems to look out for we will all appreciate them. you definitely have an audience listening
@@Jesuschristitsjasonbourne3 sure, but lets go in between at like... early to mid 2000's. The peak of reliability for modern cars. my 2002 silverado at 235k miles, 2005 sierra at 250k miles. simple and basic systems that work well.
Like a ford owner I like your videos is great your help to the ford fans. Many ford truck owners have problems with the Epas, is a problem many ford drivers have, when you will make the video about that fix ?,3 years and your fans are waiting for that, we have many cuestion about how to fix it, You make a great job thanks
Just watched someone totally service one and it was simple . he changed the belt inside 1 torx screw put the rubber boot back on with a radiator clamp and it worked perfect $ 40 for the belt from Amazon didn't even have to pull the rack . to many thieves out there it's maddening .
Had this failure on on 2015 Explorer, luckily it first failed while i was just starting up, Ford original part was $1900 CAD + labor, they found an aftermarket one for $1000 + $500 install + alignment, new EPAS had to be programmed afterwards or Lane Assist warning stayed on
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS..HOPE YOU CAN ANSWER THIS QUESTIO..2010 FORD EDGE ECOBOOST WITH THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING...SERVICE POWER STEERING LIGHT ON..STEERING WHEEL IS SUPER SUPER TIGHT ..BARELY WILL MOVE..HAVE TO REPLACE THE WHOLE RACK? FORUMS AND EVERYWHERE SAY FORD KNOWS ABOUT THIS BUT WONT DO ANYTHIN ABOUT IT AND IF I BUY A NEW RACK THEN SAME THING WILL HAPPEN
Our 2018 f150 is now in the shop to get the rack replace, 3200kms on the odo, no noise, i just complained about steering wondering and too much sway when we pulled our rv, and the service AdvanceTrac light came on but disappeared after a while when I disabled trailer sway control
2014 ford fusion with 140000 km had the steering fail. No noise. Just stopped working. I replaced the entire rack in my driveway and the motor on the rack was actually split in half. This should be recalled!
Have a 2011 f150 having this failure every cool morning but it does not make the noise. Dealer cannot identify what is wrong for sure. Once it warms up it drives fine but I am in Michigan so I cannot have this problem extending into the winter.
My 2013 Lincoln MKZ just started to have this problem. It has a shift sensor, abs and parking brake light that comes on and off. It also will not allow me to use turn signals and high beams. I'm wondering is mine beginning to fail?
A screaming giant servo...is that what I hear?.......poor thing. So, the steering seems to be moving to something like an rc car has....Wow...very interesting... Thanks (again) for the great vids...!!!!
that same sensor, well "torque sensor" is one of Gm's recalls atm) waiting on parts before we start fixing the bloody things cant wait till the new half tons for Gm start having issues, then again they have bin using that rack in other models for a while, fords belt driven as well?
I have a 2014 Ford Taurus Limited with the NA 3.5. I have had a clunking sound happening when i go over bumps while turning. I dont have this screeching sound but the dealer just inspected it and said my steering gear is coming apart. IS there currently a recall for the steering gear?
My buddy has a 2011 F150, he claim's to be having some random issues with hard steering at time's, kind of randomly it happens, but he claim's that there are no really Loud noises, what other issue's or symptoms might be indicating a failure?, also he claim's to have no system Warning's like you were describing .
Makuloco, for you experience any advice that you can provide for troubleshoot and fix on the following issue will be appreciated! Saturday, I got my 2013 XLT F-150 delivered from the body shop to my house. The person driving the vehicle said that making a turn a few blocks blocks from my house the steering wheel suddenly turned to hard to handle it. The drivers had to put all his arms force over the steering wheel to get possible the turn and control of the vehicle.....this was a really unsafe situation since look like the electronic power steering assist (EPSA) stop working or is malfunctioning. So at the present no electronic power steering assistant available on my pick-up, also when turn the vehicle on and try to move the steering wheel the following lights warning message are reading on the dashboard: "POWER STEERING ASSISTANT FAULT", follow it by "SERVICE ADVANCE TRAC", and HILL DESCENT CONTROL. Please any advice will be appreciated, I have contacted FORD Customer relation and they said there is not recall at this moment for this issue, but there is a service bulletins available for this issue.
I have 2017 ford escape SE I can hear like a dry whinnying sound when I excelerate I've checked my power steering fluid it's fine no loss there turning is fine I did change out the cv axel on driver's side last year I'm going to go ahead and change out the passenger side because I can hear some knuckle sound just like the driver's side was making trying to diagnose this issue is kinda hard because naturally I'm thinking worst case .any thoughts you want to say would be great.
My 2012 Ford Fusion every now and then throws the service advancetrax and powersteering assist fault but steers fine. A couple times it locked but now it doesn’t. Could that be a sign of it going out? I was told it’s a bad clutch behind the steering wheel air bag
If this electric assisted steering can fail at approx 40,000 miles, then you are probably going to have to do this again and again if you want to keep your truck to at least 150,000 miles? That really drives up the cost of ownership of an F150. The scary thing is almost every car maker is going with electric assisted steering, so there is really no way to avoid this issue.
Just took my 2011 Sho in for the epas recall. Picked the car up and now it feels like the front end is all over the place. When i hit a bump on the highway it wants to throw the car one direction or the other and in low speed turns the front tires squeal. Any ideas?
I straight up thought that was a screaming dog at first. Thinking, “damn, this guy needs to shut his dog up so I can hear this sounds he’s point out”. 🤣😂
I have a 2012 F-150 and my power steering is not making any of these noise, I also am not getting any fault lights or messages on the dash, my steering is just very hard to steer at any speed, do I need a whole rack? Or will a module replacement or software upgrade fix this??
Does this apply for the 2012 F-150 Lariat I think his truck has 6.2L V8 4WD that needs? : electric or or electronic power steering (pump), along with the rack and pinion. He thought person was trying to play him. They sent him quote upon part for $1,200.00 not certain whether any of what you stated in video upon Labor fee & Wheel Alignment fee was discussed. So if the truck has electric or electronic power steering rack and pinion, is the actual steering pump itself is it same or manual type pump ? An how would person know if they purchased the correct pump which goes in the vehicle to replace old bad one when doing the repair ? Thank you.
Please I have question . My 2013 Ford F-150 have a hard steering to turn it. The message was AdvancTrack and Power steering assist fail . The steering wheel is very hard to turn. Do you think Rack and pinion OR angel sensor? Or what please.
My 2013 did this one time on start up, made no noises while trying to turn it but it had no power steering, I shut it off and started it back up and I've had no issues since and that's been several miles ago, kinda worried as to what will happen if it fails why driving and what it could be
I have a 2009 ford escape. with 51,000 miles. Steering wheel only binds at engine start sometimes, not all the time. I just wait then turn it on and it works. Sometimes that does not work and I have to a few minutes to several seconds several minutes before restarting and it works again.
I just installed one rebuild rack and pinion from e-bay on my 2012 f150, after intallation all messages went out and now is working normal, do I still ha ve to program it?
Does anyone know if a rack purchased today from ford has been modified to fix the issue? I know the part number changed a couple digits from the original PN. 2011 F-150.
I have a 2014 ford f150 echo boost and it just started doing this but mine doesn’t make any noises but it showing the same thing on dash though and idk where to start on it to fix it and after a while it would randomly go away and my truck would be fine
Could the rack be failing WITHOUT noise? Mine doesn't make any noise, doesn't throw any codes, but the steering is just as stiff with or without the engine on.
This is weird because I don't have anything on my cluster that says advanced track or service steering components what I did is connected my snap-on tool and if they give me a fault code for the steering component I don't know if that's related or not
The Steering gear cracked and locked up on me mid turn in my 2017 mustang GT. Good brakes saved the car from being a write off as I was still pointed off the road. I am 3 days short of 2 full months waiting for a stereing gear to come back in stock. I only had the car 4 months before it broke so 1/3 of the time I have had it it's been broken. I am scared to drive it again after almost crashing. The battery is dead after 4 months as well with no warranty to cover it. Ac compressor blew at the same time and it was a fight to get it covered. Out 600$ for the battery and labor for a car I just bought and can't use.
my truck started making that noise last week.only at hard over left or right.but today it is locking up and sounds like the truck in video. ouch this is a painful expense. 149000 miles on my 13 f150
Mine failed during a U turn with my entire family in the truck went into a limp mode. NOT GOOD, hopefully Ford figures it out. 2011 F-150 SCREW Platinum. Talk about scary, lost steering and it jerked the steering wheel out of my hand as if I hit a pothole.
Same thing just happened to me! Luckily I was the only one in the vehicle. Making a U turn on a 60mph highway it locked up so hard I just had to make a normal left turn.
Ford EPAS steering assemblies are experiencing thermal overheating due to both poor EPAS assembly internal thermal management design, and Ford's attempt to integrate too many high-heat sources in close proximity within engine compartment. Problem is especially prevalent in turbo implementations. If you simply take a look at Ford's engine compartment implementation; a story begins to develop. Extensive heat shielding added to EPAS enclosure with turbo located within inches of EPAS assembly (3.5L Flex), large air-dam added to vehicle underbelly to increase air circulation. Recall on turbocharged Mustang due to excessive heat buildup. If you run the turbo's hard then park vehicle and take temperature measurement at EPAS aluminum enclosure under heat shield; you will see what I mean. The final death-blow comes with extremely poor thermal management design internal to TRW EPAS assembly. TRW obviously experienced heating issues during EPAS design phases. First, electronics are industrial-grade components, this limits semiconductor operating temperatures to approximately 85C. Second, TRW attempted to improve heat removal by "gooping" large amounts of thermal compound between internal electrical components and aluminum case. This compound is not intended to be applied in this fashion and over time, dries, cracks and stops conducting heat. Most interesting in your video; is evidence of identical problem experienced on my vehicle, that forced vehicle into concrete curb; i.e. non-commanded torque resisting steering wheel motion. This is typically caused when overheated H-bridge driver MOSFET'S fail causing direct current path through motor windings (confirmed in my failed unit). Note Ford explicitly states during NHTSA investigation; that this dangerous failure-mode cannot occur. Heat related failure is also supported in other investigations showing dramatic failure rate increase corresponding to summer driving months. Heat related failure explains all enigmatic and anomalous failures occurring over model types and years. Problem is not specific to any given vehicle; failures are instead due to convoluted mix of under-hood thermal management, ambient temperature, driving condition, and driver tendencies. This larger picture also explains Ford's complete failure to properly address problem at hand, and hostile posture toward affected consumers.
+K Smith Heat is definitely an issue but I can tell you I have replaced many EPAS racks and none have been ecoboost equipped. Most if not all stem from a failed non serviceable steering angle or rotational sensor and some have been for internal rack noise.
FordTechMakuloco Your feedback is still consistent with heat related failures. I had opportunity to perform detailed electrical testing on TRW EPAS rack; with failed driver electronics specifically identified. I have no doubt encoders are greatly affected by thermal problem as well; as all EPAS internal electronics are placed under thermal stress. Failure symptoms described correlate well with servo-feedback loss, as well as failed drivers. Keep in mind, TRW is rather new to complex electronic implementations. TRW's historical expertise is in design of mechanical assemblies. Placing industrial-grade, highly integrated electronics in sealed inclosure next to high-heat sources is just bad idea all around. Thanks for your feedback...
+FordTechMakuloco Would be interesting to have measured EPAS enclosure temperature measurements on F-150. I measured 78C under heat shield on 3.5L with turbo. This is far too hot for industrial grade components. Can you provide guess as to what temperature is implied by "coolest place under hood"? I have no experience with F-150 rack layout, but in Flex, entire integration is extremely tight.
My 2013 f150 electric rack took a dump at 46,000 mi. Same dash warnings, advance track, hill assist. Glad I purchased extended warranty. Very expensive rack.
My 2011 F-150 is doing this right now and I'm guessing it will cost $2000 for parts/labor. Issue is that unless you have the stuff to calibrate it all, you have to take it in to the dealership or a shop.
if i want to replace this myself could i? i have heard there has to be some programming done... but would i be able to drive it to a shop once i replace the part and have them program it or would it be completley inoperable?
He said early year models have hydraulic racks, who thinks you could/ it would be worth it to convert it back to that. Mine is recently out of my truck at the worst possible time.
I lost the power steering of my 2013 XLT 5.0 appears both "Service Advancetrac" and "Power Steering Assist Fault" My Mechanic says I need to replace the complete EL3Z3504BE Gear Assy. How can it possible in a 3 year car? Why FORD do not recall this situation.
There should be a recall. This is definitely a safety issue as it is with the Fusions that do have a recall for EPAS. Ours had faults for a year before the recall came out and it was another 6 months or so before Ford got enough new racks to comply with the recall. At first, the fix was a software update but that did not fix it at all. It never made noise though. It just failed and the key switch had to be cycled to reset it. Not good. No problems since the new rack was installed.
Mine is showing a battery light on the instrument cluster and has no power assist at all then after the truck runs for a minute the light goes off and the power steering works fine. It has a new battery and starts the truck fine. It doesn’t make any weird noises, just wondering if you have any insight on what it might be
My truck is making that sound!! It is a ford 2012 f150 ecoboost has 70000k miles,I have 6 years with the truck,no warnings on the disply panel,Is there a way ford pay for that? help me!!
I know this is an old video, hopefully you still look at comments. I have a 2011 F150 (103k miles) and one day my stearing started to pull one direction hard so I pulled over real quick and looked around and then got back in to start driving and almost immediately the "power steering assist fault" came up and it was extremely difficult to steer I was able to drive it all the way home (maybe 10 miles). I'm a big guy and it was pretty difficult to get it in my driveway. I tried to start it up again a few hours later to try again and I have the same message. There is no noise at all like this and it is not intermittently difficult. It just stayed difficult to steer. Do you think this is just maybe a computer reset kinda thing or it went bad?
FordTechMakuloco mine never made this sound either and just locked up on me the other day. I had noticed it had been a little loose feeling like alignment a little off but nothing other than that. Are you sure there is no way to replace the sensor alone? Or maybe take it to another mechanic to fix? Ford is trying to charge me 1700 for mine and it’s a 2011 Ford Fusion. Half the price my car is even worth.
I have a Ranger raptor with 10.000 km 2022 started with “tak “ noise when turn left(only left). Today it failed completely with this same noise. Take to dealer and maybe moths for waiting the part to arrive ( Argentina) :(
Do f250s have a similar problem with the sensor? Mine (2011) has the service advancetrac/ hill descent control and turn signals wont turn off after the steering wheel is straight
My 17 is in the shop right now getting a new steering gear. Fortunately Ford warranty covering it. I didn't get the noise, but steering froze up while driving.
I've got something odd with my 2012 Ford Fiesta's electric steering as well, at least I think it is. As I'm driving straight, no problem, it's when I'm going through winding roads or making steering corrections is when I feel and see the steering wheel shake. It doesn't do it if I leave it completely alone. If it were a bad tire it should be doing it all the time, shouldn't it? I would appreciate any help you can share. Thanks!
Had my old 2013 with a lifted kit on it and drove over 130000 on her and no steering issues whatsoever. 9 months after purchasing my 2017 used that has 90000 on it, the steering rack and pinion is put and needs upper control arms ball joints and stabilizer bars plus alightment. Only $4900!!! Hahaha they are high
My 2017 F150 started having the ABS light along with ServiceTrac and Hill Assist disabled messages on the dash. All the while my steering was working fine, but after driving about 10 miles the Steering Assist Fault message would then pop up. Got the vehicle scanned by a friend with a diagnostic tool and it stated that the Pass side wheel sensor was not reading properly. I ordered part and was going to change it myself. Continued driving while waiting for part, now the power steering is no longer working. Would the faulty wheel speed sensor cause my power steering to turn off completely and now that I have the new sensor, once I install it, will the steering return to normal? Please help with whatever advice u can. Thanks!
Did you ever find out what was the reason of loss of power steering? Having the same exact problem and changed the wheel speed sensor and yes it still has loos of power steering and abs lights, advancetrac, and hill assist loss
2016 F150xlt. 24,000 miles and today this happened to me. Small clunk noise. Then steering was a little stiff. By the time I got home the hill assist light and the traction control light came on. Went to back out of the driveway to bring it to the nearest Ford dealership and now the truck won’t turn. Getting it towed there in the morning. My luck is that ford here is backed up for 2weeks. No truck.
My 2011 Explorer steering is totally locked up and will not turn at all. It through all the codes except power steering. Worst car I've ever bought, nothing but problems with it. Thanks for the video.
I’m in Utah so winters are cold here. My 2011 F150 ecoboost pops up service advance trac light on freezing mornings. This disables power steering. If I let my truck warm up and turn the ignition off and then on again the service advance trac light is off and I have power steering again. My truck runs fine and I am not having any other issues besides this, no squeaks. Would this still be a bad angle sensor? Thanks
That sure is loud. 40 000 miles is way to early for this to be going. Sounds like the customer is the guinea pig. (Hopefully it won't steer you into the nearest tree!) Roughly $300 in labour for this job?
Just replaced my rack and pinion on 2012 ford explorer $1300 was good for a week and half now its out again....trac warning light on and steering wheel hard to turn
Oh, and I forgot to inform all affected owners; if you do experience mild or intermittent steering symptoms; do not take your vehicle to dealer. Any failure other than complete rack failure will result in software update only (mandated in Ford recall TSB 15S18). Once Ford has updated your software; they will not replace your steering gear after it completely fails; weeks or months later. Don't believe me? Read recall TSB and customer testimonials that were refused service after receiving software update (which only detects additional fault condition and sounds warning chime). Affected consumers are strongly advised to do whatever you can to get units to fully fail prior to dealer visit.
If my truck is a ford 2012 ecoobost and is out of warranty does the recall will apply? I have 70000k miles on it,I have 6 years with the truck, thank you Mr Smith.
