Judging by how much daylight was showing through the sides and floor of that bus in the woods, by the time you get done replacing sheetmetal, there won't be anything left of the original! And your 2.3 litre bug ROCKS!
Scrappers often cannot see the Forest for the trees. Just last week i spotted a early three door range rover heading into a scrap near me, A project 1970 Range rover will fetch $16,000 here . The scrapper refused to sell it to me,saying the $200 he would get for it would double the profit.
I love your '68. Brian took me for a ride when it was up here. Brought the front end up in 1st gear, right in front of the local cops, lol. Keep saving the relics Brother, Barefoot.
If only cars could talk. "Yeah I broke down on the highway and got parked here. Was supposed to get fixed but no one ever came around to save me so I was left to die."
Its saying "take me home, you know you want to". Start digging it out. Mustie likes that beetle of yours. It makes him smile and he gets all excited.. LOL
Lewis county upstate NY, Rte 177 area where you located your single cab, has SNOW in forescast for Nov 03 morning hours ... Preference for me as to VW van would be a 1972-75. Campmobile would be great, but regular van has potential for similar use. Have not driven a VW van as of yet, down the road, so to speak ...
@@5150mxVW yeah it's taking long. I will start my own RU-vid channel so the rest of the vw cocommunity can enjoy the restoration to. I will keep you informed pal.
Great finds Jason! My vw (crank open sun roof model) probably saved my life rolling over after missing a turn off on a steep soft shoulder. "Missed it by that much" - Maxwell Smart :-)
So right Jason, it's such a shame to see these old cars going to scrap yards. If I had unlimited funds I'd build or buy an enormous clear span type warehouse and stack it with old VW's, (air cooled only, of course). Once these are undercover they have a much greater chance of survival. My motto:- "If you collect them, you have an obligation to protect them".
I bought a 71 standard Beatles new. 150k on all original. I did replace floor sections. I was working on the motor. While on vacation my neighbor had it towed as abandoned. Crushed before we got home. It was like they killed a member of my family. Miss that car.
@@5150mxVW No the car was parked on the street. I had the engine lid covered with a trash bag to keep any rain out. Plates were off but on the back seat. The guy was the only one on our street that anyone had problems with. A real knucklehead. Small town and just happened to be on a beautification thing. Any cars reported as a nuisance were being towed. People knew me and that car so well that when it was gone they thought I had moved. My uncle was borough manager. That how I was able to get the info on what happened. Thanks for caring.
I don't think the first bus is savable for a total or even "rustoration" but there might be plenty of decent parts and panel pieces to keep other busses and single/double cabs alive. You can buy a lot of re-pop panels but if you can restore using original metal that's just more of an accomplishment. Usually only 1-2 additional steps. Good save on that Ghia! It's a total shame about those ovals. I totally get wanting to clean off the property but when it comes to cars its worth something to somebody usually far above the scrap value. I see this with squarebody chevy pickups all the time. Guys are going to scrap it for what,, $150? There are guys out there, lots of them in fact, that would save it and either part it or restore it so it can live on. And I know every car group has guys like that. We just need help connecting those guys with the people with the cars and carcasses.
There sure wasn't much holding it together Shane . Yeah , he said he thinks the scrappers destroyed the cars on purpose so they would remain on the property for them to scrap . Have a great weekend with your truck👍
Whew. You sure know where these gems are hiding. Looks like a infinite amount of rust repair. Go for it. However you will be spending a fortune at Klassic Fab!
Man to know where Mustie1's undisclosed shop is and to be able to text him must be like knowing a rock star ! Enjoy the videos keep saving those V dubs
Your Beetle is a monster...I'd need to see the bottom of that bus to decide. someone should make a kit that is pan with 1/4 of the bottom of the Bus or Bug that you can drop on top/weld and trim.
Awwww mustie1 you messed up letting these guys know where you are!!!!! Hahaha. There worse guys to show your “den of solitude” mind you, these guys are okayyyyy I guessss!!!! Haha. Thanks for sharing 5150mxVW!!!
Dear 5150mx VW Maaan, what a fantastic video with so much different things happen. 1) The blue bus is really far gone (I always want to cry when I see things rotting away without a reason). But it's a barn door and could be a colour matching sister/brother to Musties Crusty or your single cab. There are definitely a lot of usable parts on it if the bus will not be restored. 2) Maaan, that crazy black bug of yours sounds sooo wonderful and accelerates sooo incredibly good. Is the standard gear box still in it? This wild thing always puts a big smile on my face (grinning almost from ear to ear). :-) ;-) 3) Is your white split window bus driveable already? Congrats if so! 4) I think that the beautiful turquoise bus is tuned and heavily improved!? Usually a split window VW doesn't drive/steer in a straight line so nicely respectively without doing a lot of steering! ;-) :-) My respect to the owner. 5) Uuuh, that Karmann Ghia body sure looks solid. 6) What a shame and a pity that those scrap metal morons destroyed so much good unique material. It seems the same in almost every country in this world: The typical scrap metal collectors have no sense for anything else than selling the metal as fast as possible. Absolutely no matter what it was/is before they laid their hands on it. This kind of behavior always makes me very sad or let me better say that it makes me kind of sick. 7) Your white bus with ice on the windscreen gave me an idea?! Maybe call him Frostie/Frosty! He is white already! :-) Last but not least: Thanks a lot for making taping editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health to all involved people (excluding the scrap metal guys of course!) :-) ;-)
@@5150mxVW ??? So you usually read all those other comments while staying or walking around??? LOL ;-) :-) 2) Is in your great vids a lot of content I then have a lot to comment! :-) ;-) 3) I wasn't able to find your email address because there is no such thing like an "about" section in the German RU-vid. There is only something called "Kanalinfo" (= channel informations) but in it there is also no email address visible. Obviously the YT standards are different in nearly all countries. If you kindly send me your address here you can delete it in YT immediately for personal security reasons (after the first successful email from me of course). O.K.? Sincerely yours.
Sad story about the ovals. That’s a shame. You’re right we need to save these cars. That being said… The 67? How much money are you willing to put into that? See that’s the thing. Personally I’m not wealthy. And have to do things on a shoestring so gargling a project like that is out of the question. If I pulled that home , Instant divorce. Right now on the samba. Tanner Horton. Has a 1966,… 11 window For $5500 in Idaho. I know it’s a drive but it’s a cleaner vehicle. I’m not a bus guy so I don’t know if the parts fit. If it’s like a beetle, 66 and 67 are like apples and oranges. So you got to think about how much you wanna spend you know. A split window bus would be cool as all get out. But I doubt that I’ll ever be able to afford one unless one just falls in my lap. And as I said before there’s a lot better specimens down south. The ones up north are good for parts, but all that work into the body wow! That would cost a fortune. In order for me to tackle that it would’ve had to been my grandfather’s or something. Keep on, keeping on.
I dunno the bus is pretty rough but you've done the likes of it before , Covering our heads up was funny but understandable ! Must keep locations secret. Great video keep up the good work
That color is called "Marina Blau." My first car was a 1963 1/2 bus and it was the first year for the 1500 engine, four years ahead of the beetle in 1967. The only difference in a 1964 bus is the 14 inch wheels. That could be my old bus!
That feeling in the pit of my stomach when I saw the roofline on the bus 🤮. Then the floors 🤮🤮. It's always sad to see a totally hashed out bus just because it's sat for so long.
I have three buses i need to restore and get on the road. One of the three I said I will sell to a good frined. He will help me finish it far enough this winter, so he can take it to the finish line; then i can get back to work on my Bondo Condo. So I'm Busman54 and i have never been behind the wheel of a split-window bus driving down the road, I have with a 1978 bay window i restored for a friend.
Scrappers suck. They don’t know rare when they see it. They only see dollar signs. Good on you for saving these ole gals from the scrap yards. I believe that anything can be saved and repaired. Even the bus in the beginning of this video. I wouldn’t personally save it but I have a network of friends that know people who know other people so someone would come along and save that poor bus. I do think you need to rescue that baby from those weeds and twigs.
Goodmorning and i would like to say thanks for all the vids you and your friends, im a retired vet on oxygen and mostly home bound ,have loved Vw since i was younng but like some due to family and other responceabilties never got around to ever getting a bus and restoring it so i kinda live through all the vids found you through Musky1 amd his work, but im starting to like on the karma gia a bit as well as the pickup, sorry didnt mean to rattle on so again thanks for the vids ,may you and yours have a Merry Christmas and happy New Year God Bless
