Video where I tried really really hard not to like the Fujifilm X-E1 or put much effort into using it as at this point I preferred handling and using the fun Fujifilm X100, only to be completely bowled over by the quality and special character of the images that the X-E1 summons. The X-E1 uses the original APS-C X-Trans CMOS Sensor and the EXR Processor Pro (the same combination as its bigger brother, the X-Pro1) where as the sensor in the original Fuji X100 is a traditional bayer sensor.
In the video, I capture a number of different subjects in a number of locations (e.g. Frome, Somerset and London, London) with both the X-E1 and the X100 and then discuss the results looking at both the SOOC and RAF/RAF processed results.

You can really see the differences in the last image. Just picked up an X-E1 and was thinking about an X100v next, but as you video rightly demonstrates IQ trumps ergonomics. Thanks for this helpful comparison !

I don't have the X-E1 but my X-Pro1 is basically the same camera sensor wise. I also have the X-E3 and a medium format GFX50r. For my subjective taste, the oldest X-Trans sensor looks better than the X-E3 which looks kinda clinical in comparison. In fact, the X-trans1 output is very similar to the GFX50r's but with less resolution.

Before you start to hate X100 OG. The X-E1 is paired with a lens and lenses can have a certain look, contrast and sharpness. I agree that the original X100 Jpegs are kind of flat/dull but .RAW files are very pleasing and pushable. A better contender for this match would be X100S even though it has X-Trans II sensor but I believe, they share the same lens hardware.
@ChrisEdgecombePhoto

I don't hate the x100, I regret selling it especially seeing as the prices are now eye watering for this line of cameras so can't get it again as easily. I wasn't keen on trying the S variant due to the wormy effect, I now have an X-H1 which is an Xtrans3 sensor which compliments the XE1 nicely.

I just snapped up an X-E1 in excellent condition on eBay (only bidder) for AU$250 which is about £140. I’ve had an X-E4 for about a year but I’m getting it to try the first gen X-Trans sensor and to go out with my 15yo old son to teach him photography and we’ll both have similar cameras. Put my XF 27mm on it to teach him about zooming with his feet. I haven’t received the X-E1 yet but despite the appealing small, discrete size it’s also the downside. The buttons and dials on the X-E4 are cramped and fiddly and found as I walk around often the exp comp dial will get moved off 0 without me knowing. The ergonomics are generally quite ordinary compared to my bigger Pentax DSLRs (the K-1 is huge by comparison but a much better ergonomic experience) however I’m drawn to the discrete cuteness of the X-E series for street and discrete.

Yes, I definately don't like that about newer Fuji cameras, they seem to be moving away from users which prefer using external controls rather than relying on the touch screen. Good luck with the X-E1. I find a thumb grip adds greatly to the ergonomics of the X-E1.

After watching some of your great videos, I bet that I will be spurred to get an XE1 in the future. Over the past few months, I have been watching several clips praising the remarkable model XPro1, and I waited for a while to grab one sold by someone. At present, I haven't been impressed by the tonality coming from my XPro1. I have S5Pro, X100, XT1 and XPro1, and they are old toys. I will be eager to get an XE1 to compare it with my old toys. I would say S5Pro is my favourite model of the Fuji camera with its chips. I know it's unfair to compare S5Pro with the X-series bodies. Thanks for your comprehensive analysis and comparison.
@ChrisEdgecombePhoto
@ChrisEdgecombePhoto Год назад
The tonality of the Xpro1 is virtually identical to that of the XE1 IMO, I did another video which compared the two and ultimately why I kept the XE1 and sold the Xpro1. Thanks for watching.

With my X-E1 (bought in 2013) I have made gorgeous photos, film- like colors - great even by today's standards! The EVF is crappy compared to the later cameras, but I will never sell it (you hardly get more than 100 bucks anyway).
@ChrisEdgecombePhoto
@ChrisEdgecombePhoto 2 года назад
The EVF has the advantage of a decent diopter mind but agree it is on the small side, expecially when compared with the X100 and my Olympus EM1. Agree on the price, these cameras are at bargain basement prices at the moment.

@@ChrisEdgecombePhoto It's all a question of habit. As long as I used it as my only camera (roughly 2 years), I could cope with it's shortcomings and enjoyed the results, but the successor like X-T1, 3 or 4 have brighter and faster EVFs. The colors however changed and got more mainstream IMO, more "modern".

Yep... I had the X-Pro 1 and now the X100. No comparison at all. But the RAW files of the X100 are very good! I’m fully satisfied with the Lightroom output. The X-Trans output from Lightroom never satisfied me so I sold the X-Pro 1. I didn’t like to fiddle around with Capture One.
@ChrisEdgecombePhoto

I was happy with the X100 until I tried the X-E1, they have an even more organic feel to them then the X100 in my opinion although I prefer the handling of the X100.... I agree it is faffy having to use Capture One but I've just bought a license for Iridient X Transformer which works really well with the Xtrans RAF files and slots into my workflow better with Lightroom 5 if I want to edit the RAW file. Thanks for watching and commentating.

I had the x100 that I got used kinds cheap. Couldn’t get by with the controls, mostly that control wheel/directional pad. Also I liked x-trans sensor more. Then I got myself a used x100s. Liked the sensor more but unfortunately same controls. Also that battery life on those kinda suck. Eventually I sold both and use my x-pro1 & x-e2 for those filmic feels. Pairing them with 35mm F1.4 / 23 F2 / 50 F2 for a compact package. I kinda miss the ovf tho.
@ChrisEdgecombePhoto
@ChrisEdgecombePhoto 2 года назад
I do miss the x100 but the image quality from the x-trans1 sensor is better in my opinion although I'm not a fan of the form factor of the X-E1; I think the handling on the X100 was much better and its hard to put your finger on it but the X100 was just more fun to use. Also with the X-E1, the RAF files are a pain to work with; I found Capture One Express did a much better job with the X100 files than with the X-E1 files.

I had an XE2s for a while. I wanted so much to like it....jpegs and in camera image processing were genuinely lovely, but the layout was too cramped for me, I just kept hitting buttons by mistake and never got used to it. Also the lack of image stabilisation made using heavy, metal, legacy lenses almost impossible on such a small camera which is basically all I use.
@ChrisEdgecombePhoto
@ChrisEdgecombePhoto 2 года назад
Its certainly not going to be my main camera but, I can see the advantages of sticking a prime lens on the camera and use it as a fixed lens camera.

For my (smallish hands) the X-E2 is just great. I did add a handgrip to it so now I can more securely hold it while walking etc. But I don’t like using anything large on it, like 16-55 f2.8. But with something like the 35mm F1.4 or smaller prime it really fits nice in my hands
@shred3005
@shred3005 2 года назад
I’ve got an X-E4 and while it’s cute and good IQ I agree with you that the body & buttons/dials are a little cramped and fiddly. Maybe it’s going to take me a while (but I’ve had it a year$ after using my larger Pentax DSLRs which have excellent ergonomics highlighted when I pick them up again they are streets ahead to shoot with. But nevertheless I’m attracted to the discrete small size and style for street and walk around so despite the fiddly ergonomics I’ll persist for certain days and projects.

I use a trio of TTArtisan manual lenses (17/35/50) with my XE-1 …. Nice results for about $100 each. Wonder how the XE-1 compares to the E-PL2 in SOOC JPGs??? 🤔
@ChrisEdgecombePhoto

Lightroom ? There are so many profiles to open a file in Lightroom. If you use the standard Adobe profile , you start from a slighlty flat and dull ( which I generally prefer for a start) indeed. You have the Adobe profiles, the camera profiles and the creative profiles in Lightroom.
