Another great video. I’ve never heard that you never ever should clink glasses. Why not? I was just at a nice restaurant with a group and we did. I knew a rich wine snob with ocd and paper thin expensive glasses that wouldn’t let anyone clink glasses, but he was a weird guy.

I applaud your comments on food and dietary preferences. I've always seen it as rude and self-centered when people refuse to eat the food you serve because of their "special needs." Just eat what you can and avoid the rest without making a public issue about it. Or stay home and don't burden the hosts with your special needs and personal demands. Or, depending on the situation, bring your own special food and enjoy the company.
@TracyHensel
@TracyHensel 3 года назад
Thank you for sharing! I agree - It's unfortunate for the person who does have medical food allergies and sensitivities. It makes sense that dining in other's homes or in restaurants comes with challenges. Most of us understand this, as it's so common these days. I love what you shared though - Drawing attention to yourself, commenting on the food and showing up with negative energy is extremely disrespectful. It does not need to be the topic while others are trying to enjoy their food. Again, a time and place.

Great video as always, Tracy! You got me thinking with the tip about avoiding dinner parties when on a strict weight loss diet - what would you advise people who have permanent dietary restrictions due to moral (example - vegan), religious (example - kosher) or medical reasons that are not allergies? I will speak on my example but you advice would be helpful and applicable to all people who need to cut out multiple food groups. I have pcos and keto/low carb is my diet for medical reasons (on top of other restrictions like no soy, processed foods etc). When I’m a guest at someone’s house I try to eat only what I can but this often leads to questions or assumptions that I don’t like what the hosts have prepared or that I’m trying to lose weight (with reassurances that I don’t need to). I don’t want to disclose my condition, it’s private, not to mention the word “ovary” makes people even more uncomfortable at the dinner table. At the same time, I would like to be polite and appreciate the trouble the host has gone trough preparing the meal. What would you recommend? I was thinking of coming to dinner with my own food but that will lead to more questions (and seems a bit disrespectful to the host) or letting the host know in advance (which also seems a bit rude, as if I’m dictating them what to cook). Would love to hear your thoughts!

Love this Tracey, thank you! I am shocked about the “cheers” or “toast” comment to not clink glasses together and just raise up. What would you do if someone tried to clink your glass ? 🥂🥂
@TracyHensel
@TracyHensel 3 года назад
Great question, Molly! I have never had someone try in a formal or more professional setting, but I have clinked my glass numerous times out of respect for the person going in for it. In a casual setting, it's very natural to see the clinking.

Not dominating a conversation, or having multiple conversations going across the table at the same time is a good one. It’s like someone constantly changing channels on a TV set. I remember attentively listening to good conversation and the person next to me constantly trying to drag me into a separate , really annoying conversation. (Long story).

Hi Tracy! Great video. I have a question for you. How early did you start teaching your daughters proper dinner etiquette such as this video. I don’t mean the regular everyday manners we are taught very early on in life but rather prepare them for adult dinners. I mean specifics such as a hostess’s gift, a brief thank you & goodbye with the hostess at the door when you leave a large dinner party, bringing a gourmet or homemade dish/dessert, as you indicate in this video. I’m very intrigued. Thank you!
@TracyHensel
@TracyHensel 3 года назад
Thank you! Great question! I cannot say that I formerly instructed my daughters. I will also share that, we as a family don't always have impeccable table etiquette. When it's just us eating together, it's mostly quite casual. I would say most of the 'adult' preparation took place by my witnessing my daughters do something the wrong way and then me showing and instructing them the right way. Examples: holding a wine glass properly, placing butter on and eating bread correctly, which silverware to use, etc. As for Hostess Gifts, RSVP and Thank You, they witnessed how I handled these situations and followed suit.

Tracy, we are attending a birthday party for my husband’s grandmother to celebrate her 95th birthday this Sunday. His aunt is hosting in her home and has assigned everyone to bring a dish or dessert. We were assigned dessert and so I reached out to confirm what others were bringing so we didn’t have too many chocolate desserts or fruity desserts etc. My husband’s aunt asked us to bring the birthday cake, which needs to be large enough to feed 25 people. I know our regular bakery won’t be able to accommodate such a request so close to the event date and am surprised to be asked to contribute an item I feel is usually supplied by the host. Curious of your thoughts because I would like to handle this with grace and class. Thank you!
@TracyHensel
@TracyHensel 2 года назад
I would share with your husband's Aunt exactly what you shared with me: our regular bakery won’t be able to accommodate such a request so close to the event date Then ask her what others are bringing so that that you don't make something similar. I never ask what I can bring. I propose a couple of my best and let them choose; For example, "Would you like me to bring my Dirt Pudding, Fruit Pizza or Oatmeal Carmelite Bars?" Good Luck!

@@TracyHensel Thank you! That was how the conversation began, I asked what others were bringing so we didn’t bring something similar and she answered by telling me what others were bringing and saying, “Oh but we don’t have the cake!” and then proceeded to ask for us to bring it.
