I have been gardening, quilting, soaping and canning for most of my life. I believe there might be some value to documenting some of the skills I have learned over the years. I appreciate you joining me on this journey. We can all learn something from each other, and I hope to gain some insight from other peoples experiences as well. Thank you for showing this process. I have always thought it was difficult to make yogurt. Now I know better.

I absolutely love your idea of using a cooler with the jars filled with hot water!! I usually use a sink full of hot water and have to refill the sink with more hot water because it cools off too fast. Thank you greatly for the idea!

I like your cooler trick. Nifty. Thanks. We do ours overnight in an IP. Works great. Love yogurt! And it makes great cheese too!

Love your little jars and caps. Are they in your Amazon store?
@HerHomesteadSkills
@HerHomesteadSkills Месяц назад
actually they are Ball freezer jars...you can use ball glass jam jars as well as these are not going in the freezer.

You leave the jars of Hot water in with the yogurt for 5-8 hrs. then? Or was that just to pre warm the cooler? THANK YOU Toni:)❤
@HerHomesteadSkills
@HerHomesteadSkills Месяц назад
@marsha.m6357 it's just to keep the cooler warm!
@HerHomesteadSkills
@HerHomesteadSkills Месяц назад
@marsha.m6357 perhaps I misunderstood, I do leave the jars of hot water in the cooler WITH the yogurt cups.

Why do you heat to 180 first? I know some people that are using Raw milk do that to pasteurize it. But if using store bought whole milk that is already pasteurized couldn't we just heat to the 110 then add the culture or starter?
@gymgirllja
@gymgirllja Месяц назад
Heating the milk to 180° kills the bacteria you do NOT want in the milk. These would inhibit the yogurt cultures from blooming. This step is already done in ULTRA-pasteurized milk. Cooling the milk to 110° allows you to introduce the bacteria you DO want into the milk (in the yogurt starter), WITHOUT killing them. Keeping the milk warm after (wrapped/in a cooler or in the oven with the light light) allows the newly introduced yogurt cultures to bloom throughout the milk, and voila! You have yogurt!

You have received the correct answer, I have nothing to add to it!

Toni what would you use if you are making this for the first time and don't have that cup of yogurt to add to your milk?
@HerHomesteadSkills
@HerHomesteadSkills Месяц назад
ah yes...I forgot that...you can purchase starter...I just buy ready made yogurt...make sure it's plain with active cultures. eat most of it and save some to make my own.

When you bring your milk to 180 do you have to correct for altitude if you live at a higher elevation?
@HerHomesteadSkills

apparently not!
