Look at the internal rotation of his front leg. He holds that position longer than I've ever seen. That should cause his right hip to explode through at front foot strike. Basically driving his upper body to rotate so much faster without stressing the elbow.

Found it funny how you told us at the beginning that Sasaki isn't the type of guy to get into insane positions and then there's this stopframe at 13:16 that showcases his insane hip flexibility

Hey Ben, this much IR in the hips, legs, and feet during his drift and hinge almost reminds me of my son, who I've noticed is a bit pigeon toed. On the surface, this seems to be conducive to hip IR, but it also has implications for the direction of his lead foot when it lands (tends to be closed rather than pointing to home) and with ankle eversion (it rolls over so that the toe ends up pointing to 1B rather than "flips and drags"). Does being naturally pigeon toed materially affect healthy mechanics or sap velocity and power generation? Any tips on how to address any shortcomings from this?

@@mikeybroe1 I agree, but I'm also curious about any sort of loss of power by having energy not transferred up the kinetic chain by what might be improper movement around the feet. If the leg or any part of it is "over-winding" during the transfer of energy up the kinetic chain, is that holding back potential energy or worse, drawing it back down the chain?

I did request it 2 years ago but it seems like tread only do ones that have big news or prospects. I also requested roki when he was playing u18 but they ignored it. Kodai senga also wont be coming to mlb so maybe thats why they dont make a video on him.

I wonder how many days rest he's on between starts, and how many inn he'll end up throwing this season. If I were a gm I'd rather he not aim toward increasing anymore velocity, but rather work toward developing a more consistent 3rd pitch.

Im hoping to see what ben has to say about that double leg kick...is that a trained movement pattern? Is it a japanese thing? Because it looks like they might actually be teaching that specific move in asia (japan and korea)

@@daviemerim3002 0:12 yeah, so they teach the cue in asia where note at the top he draws the leg in then kicks out and away from the moubd while getting into drift...then the second part is where he takes the long arc from his left foot and "kicks" into foot plant. I have seen them actually teach this in segments as specific cues. I wanted to get bens thoughts on this because this appears to be highly one size fits all coaching if the hip ROM is not there...and i also wanted to know if there was any science to back up whether this actually leads to any value add in terms of force generation.

0:19 for a different angle. Kick at top. Then drift. Then second "kick" into rotation. It seems to me they try to extract some extra force from the counter rotation of the hips. On the other hand, trevor bauer is a guy who specifically says the unleveling of the hips at this point is inefficient, as would be that straightened left leg while heading into drift phase. So i was hoping ben could clarify on what side of the fence he was on or if this is dependent on hip structure or other.

True the long-closed hip is what struck me immediately about him. I wonder whether that can create hip problems in the long run? Wasn't Tim Lincecum step a little similar?

A former Japanese NPB player said that Sasaki's way of throwing, with his maximum use of his hip joints, is ideal but not something that can be easily mastered unless you have been doing it since childhood.

Japan has such a wealth of talent in baseball for a country of its size. The NPB is a 12 team league that feeds from a pool of players from an area the size of California. I know they have Foreigners there too. But they don’t hinge there teams success on Foreign players typically. I feel like the NPB may not be as elite over all as MLB of course. But it’s definitely more talented than our Triple A.

More talent than our Triple-A? Haha, some pundits and sportswriters said something similar ( even worse) when Shohei Ohtani started playing in the MLB. BTW, Japan won the WBC this year.

He does zero weight training. Only train using his own weight and elastic bands. He has very strong core and inner muscle, but not much outer muscle at all. And he has very flexible body like ohtani. So he has more whip effect on the ball when he pitchers. His current club treat him like a baby prince, never allow him to pitch many counts.

I don't think he'll succeed/or even want to play in the MLB cause I heard that he doesn't wanna leave his family, so he'd probably become homesick and be not mentally prepared for games. I'd also have to see him pitch using a mlb game regulation ball first since npb balls are smaller

He'd be much older before he is eligible, and by then if he decide to be posted, he'd have the option to go to a team who already has another Japanese pitcher. Hmm let's see, which other Japanese pitcher would he like to come under?

@@sleepyheadz Japanese pitchers historically avoid playing with fellow Japanese pitchers in MLB. Only exception is Okajima and Matsuzaka in Boston 2007. But that was the same year they entered MLB and they had different roles. So it has actually never happened. Darvish in LAD 2017 with Maeda does not count because he was traded. Ohtani has explicitly said he wishes to avoid playing on same MLB team that already has Japanese players. I highly doubt Sasaki with choose an MLB team already with a Japanese starting pitcher.

Is it really 102mph though. I don't think so. Go look at JV 102 after 100 pitches against the Indians. Even in this video of Coles 96 and 98, it looks faster.
