I’m a speech pathologist, and it seems like in healthcare/helping professions you’re expected to help people at any cost to your health, losing sleep/free time doing paperwork/ prepping, working the weekends to finish reports since I didn’t have time during the week, and caring about getting paid what you deserve or fighting to lessen the workload to cap at 40 hours shouldn’t be a priority because patients/clients come first. I’m glad to hear someone speaking up about this and how to make your career work best for you. In healthcare/ helping professions it should be normalized and acceptable to advocate for your needs financially and lowering caseloads if possible because we can help people AND take care of ourselves, and when these are both aligned they enhance our performance and ability to fully give to our patients. Like you said in other video, we are people too. I’m not a nurse but our field has a shortage as well and I’m exhausted. We’re always doing 2 peoples work cuz someone quit or they can’t find anyone. I like my field but the caseloads get outrageous…I’m still expected to go above and beyond, plus be enthusiastic about it otherwise I don’t care about the kids and I’m not doing enough. Do more with what energy and time….I’m thinking of leaving my current job, maybe hourly is the way to go. I’m salaried but a 40 hour work week is a joke, I’ll take a pay cut to actually work 40 hours per week. I don’t want overtime either, want less work, me tired. Glad you found what works for you though, thx for sharing 🙂

I’m so sorry to hear this! Healthcare jobs are so overworked and underpaid. I HATE the outdated way of thinking that we are here to help and you don’t get into this for pay. It’s so degrading. It’s because we are women dominant fields. My husband is an attorney and no one would ever tell him “your clients need you” and tell him to charge less because he is a “hero.” What a joke. They use those buzzwords to prey on us. We can and we will help people AND make money.

In my lifetime experience this is the way it is in way too many fields. Its "get the job done" no matter what. When I was selling cellular phones, we had a monthly "quota." I had to sell 19 units per month or not get my base pay. My base pay was $1,200 a month, the other $800.00 came from selling units and accessories -my average monthly salary was $2,000 before taxes and paying for health care/insurances. I was responsible to provide my own car, gas, oil changes, and repairs. I was up every day at 4 a.m., showered., dressed, ate and packed my lunch (there was NO time to stop for lunch in this business.) I was at my desk by 7:15 a.m. I was handling paperwork, memos, preparing marketing materials, putting phones together, charging batteries etc. 8-9 a.m. staff meeting and then I was out cold calling 8+ hours a day, pounding the pavement and trying to make a sale. I was putting 150 miles per day on my vehicle. I was back in the office by 5 a.m.-7 p.m. for in office evening meetings with customers and putting more phone together/charging batteries etc. My workday went from 7 a.m to 7 p.m. My total salary at the end of the year was $21,000 annually. It did not matter if I was ill, I had to work or not make my quota and not get paid! Ultimately, I ended up in the hospital, exhausted and stressed beyond the max. I made it a year and then I quit. I simply could not take this any longer.

I was told by a travel nurse that our local hospital was 65% contract (traveling staff). So that is is only a 35% for local or permanent staff. When I asked WHY that was, I was told the hospital gets significant tax write offs for traveling staff. In my area people are massively underpaid for the reported state average. After nine years of working for the hospital I was still a good $12 dollars below the state average... so about 50% below. But it was everyone in the hospital. When I have been shown offers for traveling contract I'd be making more than those with doctorate's degrees with 20+ years of experience. Its really awful. All I can say to anyone reading this is don't waste your precious time hoping or thinking the hospital will ever appreciate you in terms of pay. You can't live off of pizza parties and accolades... you have to pay bills and plan for the future.

You should review the MGMA Physician Compensation Report -- it serves as the basis of physician salary negotiation for both physicians and hospitals and is the widely upheld as the most accurate source of physician compensation data. Travel nurses don't even make half of what the lowest-paid physicians make. Many surgeons -- neurological, cardiothoracic, orthopedic, etc. -- average nearly one million dollars per year.

Yeah travel nurses don’t make what surgeons make. But primary care doctors, oncologists, etc make around what travel nurses do.

@@rudygreg173 yes oncology is not a "popular" nursing field so competition is way less compared to ICU and ER. There's also not as many job positions but every time I apply for an outpatient oncology position I get it. While many ICU travel nurses have to apply for multiple icu travel positions.

As a cancer survivor, this is actually repulsive. I've had chemo. Not one nurse spent more than 20 minutes max with me during a chemo session. I'm not saying oncology nurses aren't valuable. They are. But to profit like this off of cancer patients is perhaps the only thing more abhorrent than the hospital system. Do you have any passion for patients? Because all I see in this video is a very entitled greedy woman who thinks her nursing degree is somehow equivalent to a doctor's and who wants $5,000 a week to dispense traumatic medications to sick, suffering; and dying patients. I'm glad you at least made this video so people can see your face. If you came near me in an oncology department, I'd refuse to be treated by you. Honestly, if this isn't exploitation of the most vulnerable patients, I do not like what is.
@christinatravels6717
@christinatravels6717 2 года назад
I’m sorry you feel this way. I’m happy to hear you are a cancer survivor! What a stressful thing to go through. For the record, Nurses are not profiting off of you. Travel nurses do not get paid from the drug companies. Did you know handling chemotherapy drugs is dangerous? Do you remember seeing those gowns and gloves we wore? There is a huge risk we take when handling these medications. You may have only seen your nurse for 20 minutes bc we are responsible for sometimes upwards of 100 to 200 patients a day. We do a LOT more than hang drugs. We are responsible for handling all reactions and codes. We triple check all doses to make sure pharmacy didn’t make a mistake (and I’ve caught many dosage mistakes). We do so much behind the scenes that patients are not aware of. We also are very emotionally attached to our oncology patients and I absolutely adore working with this population. However, I also think I should be fairly compensated for the work I do and the risks I take. Oncology nursing is a specialized field that we have to be certified in and continuously train. It’s a very complex profession and oncology nurses are highly trained. I don’t think it’s fair for to judge care takers for wanting to get paid for their expertise.

My dude she aint doing it for charity... if nurses stopped doing it or went on strike who would give you your life saving meds? Why is it ok for drs to make insane amount of money but not nurses.... wake up you are living in the real world
@sabrinatai31

This is a conversation that many in the Healthcare speak about. Sorry it hurts you ,but it is business like everything else. People go to school to help others . It is not free service at all . Sorry you want to hear that people never think about their personal bills and getting paid well for working. The truth is they want their money just like lawyers , plumbing workers , construction workers and bankers. Nursing is the only profession that people call themselves feeling repulsive because health care workers want to get paid too. Of course nurses etc love what they do ,but stop thinking it is wrong to want to make a good living helping others. It is not free , it take alot to do the job and many don't want to do it. She did not celebrate people being sick. She is just saying what area of nursing has a history of being needed and earning high.
@sabrinatai31
@sabrinatai31 2 года назад
Not just nurses but every person who comes in contact with your room come at risk for your body limits filled with radiation. It is a risk to all staff help while you want to get mad about people wanting to be paid right. It isn't free at all.
@TikkunOlamEighteen
@TikkunOlamEighteen 2 года назад
I don't want anyone to think I believe nurses should not be paid well. I think they should. Of course, I understand the risks they take. And, I do understand that it's a business. I work in healthcare I get that. I don't have a lack of appreciation for the profession. I very much appreciate nurses. That said, I don't think they are doctors or lawyers and don't think demanding $4,000 a week helps anyone involved in the healthcare system. As someone who works in healthcare, I believe part of my job is serving other. I would NEVER demand extra anything from my boss for helping a patient if I worked a minute or two over my 40 hour week. I answer messages on the weekends and at 3 am sometimes for free. Because my whole heart is in it and when a patient is sick or their child is sick, I don't think about making bank first. I think about the fact that they need a reply first. I have never, ever billed for doing that. And, I never will because I already make a fair wage. I don't make anywhere near $5,000 a week. But I believe my pay is fair and equitable to the company I work for and the patients we help.
