This is a tutorial on how to build assistance pulleys for the gymnastics rings which can be used anywhere. What this does is reduce the effort by a half. You can then hold positions, build strength, and perform reps you would not be able to otherwise. These are portable and relatively simple to make. Rings are a great bodyweight exercise and can be really impressive once you learn some basic skills.
I don’t think there is an official name for this set up but there are some brand names I have heard such as The FIFTY FIFTY, The Ring Thing, Dream Machine etc. These cost in excess of £300 and the DIY version in this video will cost significantly less. I bought my items in one go from a UK store called go outdoors, you could use any store that sells rock climbing equipment or you can buy the items online for much cheaper, I was just impatient.
A list of items you will need are below, I have listed prices for cheap items which I have found on amazon at the time of uploading this video.
Gymnastics Rings £14.99 - these normally come with some strapping which is useful.
15m Rock climbing rope £7.28 - You can have this cut to length in store, I would suggest having them cut it into the 4 sections you will need as they have a good tool meaning the cuts are neat and not frayed.
Pulleys x 2, £7.03 each - I bought higher quality pulleys for £16 each, this is a somewhat essential part of the kit.
Carabiner x 2, £2.99 each - I bought a higher quality stronger carabiner for £6.00 each as I want to be absolutely confident in it holding me during any fast falling movements. This is also somewhat optional but highly recommended. This is because you could tie the rope to the harness however it would be more uncomfortable and take longer to set up each time as you would need to tie rope to harness each time.
Harness £19.99 - Ideally you want a harness which has a ring connector at each hip where you can attach a carabiner. I bought a more expensive comfortable harness however mine does not have the ring connectors but I can just attach it at the side anyway. It’s also possible to go without this as you can use another secure belt that you already have. All you need is a way to attach rope to your hips which can hold your weight. Get creative!
-Total cost on a budget £61.30
-Absolute ghetto cost £36.33
-Total I spent for decent equipment £104.47
-Being a ring beast Priceless

Hi. Was wondering if you could help. I want to build an outdoor frame to support my Olympic rings workouts. How to I calculate how tall the bar needs to be if I'm doing above the rings workouts? Cheers

Hello, just a friendly reminding, the gear loops might break when you load more than 25 LB. (depending on the materials) I saw some gear loops can load 300KG, but some ones are not very reliable.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind :)
@bunyip42

The trick would be to put a carabiner around the harness *and* gear loop. So, the harness takes the weight and the gear loop only stops it moving around. Oh, also, the "stronger" knot shown is a figure-eight bend, it's what climbers use to tie on to a rope, it's the way to go

In the process of building it as well! IN my experience you don't need more than 6 meters of rope in total tho ahaha

Is it possible to lower the amount of weight that the ring thing can hold?
@tpdh4690
@tpdh4690 4 года назад
Add extra weight on yourself that's the only way
@lukelouca6850
@lukelouca6850 Год назад
Or if you don’t want to wear the extra weight on you, you can just hang the rings in a classic set up. Then, you can use the pulleys system with one side of the rope tied to your harness (like in the video), the rope goes through the pulley and the other side is tied to some counterweights to balance half your body weight or less (or more if needed). The counterweight you put on the other side of the 2 pulleys is the weight you “remove” from your body weight. It’s a very versatile set up ! 💪🏽 Ex : you weight 72kg, you want to remove 1/4 of your body weight so 18kg in total, so you hang 9kg on each pulley
@johnmar1622
@johnmar1622 Год назад
10/10 its 50 /50. so if you wear weighted vest 10kg gradually, when you reached your 50 body weight you have reached 100% iron cross.

I should have seen this before I built my own, I bought the wrong pulley and cables.

Good idea, but you could have just skipped using the rope and pulley, and only used the black nylon tape with one end tied to the harness and the other to the ring going through a delta link (triangular carabiner) on top.
