In this video I share how to make a cardigan from the word Göbeklitepe. I discovered this method of crocheting from words while searching for the origins of crochet. I combined my crochet code and repetitive patterns made by our Neolithic ancestors to create the crochet buttons. The first round of the crochet cardigan pattern is as follows; OCCC, VII, CII, VII, CIII, CIII, CI_. Abbreviations are as follows; O=magic circle, C=chain, I=double crochet in USA or treble crochet in the UK, V=V stitch, double crochet, chain 1, double crochet (USA) or treble crochet, chain 1, treble crochet (UK). _=slip stitch in USA or single crochet in the UK. The rest of the pattern follows the granny pattern sequence and it will make a wobbly hexagon. For the premature baby cardigan you need to make four rounds, then fold from the corner you finish at to the next right corner to make the sleeve by slip stitching together. Leave one set of three stitches unworked. When you have two pieces made the same, you need to add an extra row, then join the two pieces together. At this point they will look like the capital letter T just like the pillars at Göbeklitepe. Add one more row to make sure you can overlap the front pieces when fastening.
If you want to make larger cardigans you just need to make extra rounds at the beginning, so a newborn cardigan will need nine rounds before you make the sleeve, but this time, leave two sets of three stitches unworked. The rest of the cardigan is made the same way, but you might like to add extra rounds to make the overlap more cosy. Finish the edges with either a single crochet or slip stitching, then turn the right way round.
To make the crochet buttons, the pattern is as follows; CCCCC, _, XXXXX XXXXX__, abbreviations are C=chain, X=single crochet (US) or double crochet (UK), _=slip stitch (US) or single crochet (UK).
Happy crocheting.
