Great vid Bilal! Just a quick one...I sometimes get pain on the inside of my right foot after I've been jumping. Its usually around that ball shaped bone which sticks out of the side of the foot so slightly lower down than where shin splints would be. Any idea what this could be please?

This has been excellent advise. I’ve been skipping 4x a week for over a year, but only completing about 200 skips a day no issues. I decided to ramp it up to 1000-1200 skips a day and my shins are dead!

Thanks for bringing on an expert to answer the question. I have been jumping rope for years, I am quite advanced with perfect form and I take all precautions to prevent shin splints but I still get them anyways. I have always wondered whether my flat feet were the reason why I never got rid of them and Bilal just confirmed this. I'll get orthotics and see if they help.

Hey Rush, wondered if I could ask you I have varicose veins in my left leg and though I have a jump rope I have been scared to use it as I don't want more of my veins to burst. I used to dance and I noticed that over the years my veins had come out alot when working my legs, though I try in my yoga to relieve some of that pressure through legs up the wall and headstands, I really want to loss some of this little extra fat I have. Would maybe getting a ankle support help my leg with the pressure, obviously I will try keep my jumps light and I have sketcher trainers that have micro-foam cushioning, but any other advice would be helpful as I really want to jump rope but I don't want to burst my leg. Thanks

Buy a weighted rope and a speed rope from the start, practice with the weighted rope to begin with. Will help you with your pace cus you can only swing it so fast and will wear you out quicker so you're less likely to push farther than your body is ready. I had a miserable experience with a speed rope my first week, and I walk 20,000 steps a day for work so it's not like my legs were weak(but they were weak in this area). I switched to a weighted rope for the next month and when I went back to the speed rope I was able to go for 20 minutes no problem whereas the first week I couldn't go for 5 without messing up a million times and my legs killing me. The weighted rope will help you build up muscle faster.

Thanks for this! I was about 4 days in when I realised something was up with my left shin. I’ve been jump roping on a fitness mat without shoes - I thought that was okay but perhaps I need a thicker one! (Jumping with shoes makes way too much noise, especially when I do it in my living room) - just one question, how do you know when you’ve recovered from it? My leg is fine during the day but once I start jump roping and about 300-400 rotations in it comes back again. I’ve been resting for a few days now, maybe I just need to rest a bit longer? I’m so eager to begin again!

Probably start slowly and like they said take little breaks after like 20 seconds don’t go in too fast

I had shin splints when I started running a lot do to mainly poor form when It got bad I severely limited my activity but kept running to stimulate the inflamed ligaments i was told it could take up to 9 weeks to recover from the pain with rest well guess what with my daily stimulation of the ligaments the pain disappeared in 1 week 2 weeks before it was totally gone I also fixed my form knowing now that was actually the issue so pay attention to what may be causing it I don't reccomend completely cutting out activitie daily stimulation is healthy for an injury as long as you listen to your body slow down if you can't handle it

Hey Rushie, just wondering, what size money rope do you use, 11 or 10 foot?

Absolutely superb, practical and informative video on shin splints. Excellent! I wish you'd say 'skipping' more instead of 'jumping rope'.. That's what the yanks call it! Lol.
