Today I am down at Meridien Modena in Lyndhurst, once again. The 550 is having some work done and I have a few hours to kill, so I've come down to the showroom to film a piece I've wanted to make for quite some time.
I go through just a few of the things you might need to know about driving a Ferrari, if you're going to be doing it for the first time. By and large these are easy cars if you know what you're doing - but a few things might catch out even a seasoned driver. Enjoy

I believe the most important thing is to remind new drivers of how low the nose is on these cars. Exiting driveways, parking nose first, and going over speed bumps isn’t something most people think about too much, but need much caution in cars like these

Hey James, there's a trick about 360 and 430, if you want to avoid breaking the door handle (happens eventually..) - most people pull the handle and then pull the whole door through the handle. You shouldn't do that to preserve the handle... you should open the door by pulling the handle and then open the door wide by grabbing the side of the door rather than pulling the whole door by the handle. Don't know if im clear...

The thought process you use to make videos like this is so refreshing . Well done mate and your presenting skills are top notch. I've had a number of embarrassing moments with unfamiliar cars and bikes and it really distracts from the driving / riding experience in a very brown pants kind of way. When armed with a lot of horses it's so important to do your research first so your focus is looking what's out in front of you rather than searching for a button or lever. The F40 at the end tho, made me chuckle 😅

Well I found it informative, even if others perhaps didn't. It was a good way to make content out of a "situation" as well. One thing I was advised to do when starting my 550 was to put ignition on, and wait for the ECU to do its diagnostic, and then (hopefully!) show a "CHECK OK" on the dash display, and then start the engine. This helps avoid a possible ECU fault. Same goes for the 355 as well I think?

Watching you get in and out of the F40 was my amusement for a slow work day. Great video, and not too condescending, which is a difficult balance given the subject. Remember my first 360 drive (near Le Mans, thrown the keys by the owner (who had been drinking) with the car surrounded by French kids, who I was then expected to take for a drive around the town), had no problem starting the car, getting in was an issue as stamped on the accelerator of the already running car (for that max revs sound appeal!). Then with one of said kids already installed in the passenger seat, asking questions in broken Frenglish, I had no idea where the light switches were (it was about 10pm and they were necessary) trying not to look stupid for 'les enfants'! As you said, once installed and everything running was simple and entertained about 12 kids for an hour or so.

On the round Ferrari fuel filler cap it’s worth lightly greasing the screw thread. On my 1993 Mondial 3.4 pressure in the fuel system made it extremely hard to turn the cap, grease helps. It still resisted & a socket wrench plus a 3-pronged device to remove an oil-filter, works well! On earlier Ferrari’s the radiator needs bleeding by unscrewing a knurled brass bleed valve. 308GT4’s have them

I hope to buy a Ferrari one day but I need a rear seat (I have a dog I take to work each day, yes I know that sound stupid but it’s true !) so it’s got to be a California for me so if you get to drive and review and compare the original and the T and let me know which is better that would be great. A great tutorial on what to expect if you're lucky enough to test drive a Ferrari. I can't imagine the dealer allowing a stranger to drive the car alone. Lets drive a 458 or am F12 to get an idea of a V12 GT vs a mid-engine. The Roma may drive great and have updated electronics but it doesn't look like a Ferrari in the grill and tail areas. I'd get a Portofino and that way you have the retracting hardtop too.

Interesting video to introduce people to driving a Ferrari. Have to say I would disagree with blipping an F1 box yourself on downchange - I can't see anyway of timing this well enough to coincide with the clutch being engaged/disengaged and of course the car already does it for you. However, you can be accelerating hard and call for a down change which in the case of the 16M will engage SF2 60 millisecond gearchanges on the down change - people often assume it is only available for upchanges. The other thing to mention is that the F1 box isn't sequential so does allow for jumping gears, particularly useful for an overtake. Also worth noting the Schumacher bumpy road setting is only available in Race or above, pushing it in Sport does nothing - CT is the perfect dry road mode.

The first Ferrari I drove was the F355 F1 in 2000 and I never forget the salesman telling me on the first drive to be careful with the brakes! We know they are fast cars, but they also stop faster too! Therefore, anyone on your tail at high speed will not be able to stop as quickly causing risking a prang! At high speed, you do need to check your mirror to ensure the car behind has the required stopping distance should you jump hard on the brakes!

Its a great video BUT I already knew everything. I bought all these cars in Gran Turismo. I prefer L2 and R2 on my gamepad for changing shifts rather than this robust plastic piece in the car. I also think you overemphasized how gentle you have to be with them. I have crashed many times during a single lap in GT and at best it has a small scratch if any. They all run like a dream, I have no idea what all these people do with these external batteries. Sometimes I don't drive my Ferraris for months but all I have to do is press my foot on the gas and they start right away. Most of the times I don't even need fuel. They are expensive but definitely worth it for all the reasons I mentioned above. I rarely use reverse though, I prefer to just press the center of my PS4 gamepad to reset me on the track. That way I can do my groceries shopping much more efficiently even if I crashed a few times along the way.

I really didn't think the F1 gearboxes would be _that_ similar to the ZZW30 SMT, even down to the reverse beep. Only differences I noticed are gear selection (SMT uses a level to select neutral and reverse), downshifting (SMT will rev-match on its own), and idling in gear (SMT will not return to neutral on its own).

I like how he talks like we are all going to own one the only Ferrari I can afford is driven by a remote control or pulling it back and letting go.

It is possible to afford a Ferrari and I’m on my sixth since 1982, but all have been in the lowest price bracket. I’ve had 4 308GT4’s & 2 Mondial’s. These are manual gear-stick transmissions with no driver aids altho the Mondial’s from 1988 have abs. The 3.4 Mondial t has power-steering. Provided a low price Ferrari has a comprehensive history file & checks out ok there prices currently can be from £20,000 to around £45,000. Servicing is relatively inexpensive on 308GT4’s & the Mondial’s up to my 1988 3.2 QV. My annual oil change and brake fluid change cost £300 plus Vat. On these cars a new cambelt is needed every 3 years as a must do at £600 to £1200 plus vat. Watch John Pogson on The Drive, RU-vid reviewing a Mondial 3.0QV and as he says “you don’t need to spend £200,000 on buying a Ferrari” The cheap ones are just as much fun and are great to drive! Plus the Prancing Horse badge gets me into amazing events!! The servicing the 3.4 Mondial is much more costly tho as the engine has to be removed. Join the Ferrari Owners’ Club & once you have owned any Ferrari you can be a member for as long as you pay the subs. The people in it are just enthusiasts. All easy going.

That 360CS is beautiful. My Ferrari poster cars as a child skipped from F40 to the 360CS. Buuuuuuut, if I was in Meridien Modena with a stupendous amount of cash burning a hole in my pocket then it would be the Dino I think I'd be signing for, simply gorgeous!!!

One of your best videos James. Is that Damian's 360? When he collected his Pista Spyder he drove down in it but didn't mention how he was to get it back home. Makes sense now.

Thank you James, maybe I am ageing but I prefer the relatively simple lines, they flow so much better than the in-house designs. However, the Roma is a thing of beauty.
