'"Value'' in this economy is essentially meaningless. I don't even know where to begin. Open Source technology as a paradigm is so successful because it requires no payment. If you are accepting or requiring payments from people you are requiring a financial loss from those people. In a ''market'' in which profits are incentivized to maximise wealth, it creates an ecosystem of predatory behaviours. This is why you see huge corporations with all the wealth maximising their methods to keep the common folk poor. You're saying ''playing the guitar is not a valuable skill'' and that's just sad to hear really. Sure i don't want to complain I just see the economy as a zero sum game in a ''profit vs loss'' model. We should preferably strive towards a ''win + win'' model.

Great advice. I would add that once you land a gig, don't become complacent. Comfort and complacency are the enemy of progress. Always try to learn and always keep your eye out for a better situation. No matter how good you think you have it, there's always a better job out there. Like the old saying goes, sometimes you can't smell the shit any longer because you've been sitting in it too long.

While this is something many people need to hear, it is also something most people find out eventually. What is not acknowledged is that Finn is just 1% of those who try the same and most of them fail. The exceptional case proves nothing. He's blind to the talents and luck he has, and just because he was poor and not the most talented when he was young, does not mean he had the same opportunities as everyone else. The system IS rigged against most people, and this is not some excuse people use to give up, it is a fact that calls to action to change the system. What's here advertized is that people should quit their dreams and submit to the exploitatory system by working their ass off for financial security. No, you're forced into doing this, but you should not give up fight against the system.

@@duncan.o-vic Absolutely true. What works for some will not for others. People of color, women, LBGTQ people, people with mental health issues, and so many more that I’ve not mentioned have inherent disadvantages that most cannot understand. Talent and luck do factor in. There seems no rhyme or reason why some become successful and and others don’t. Be it a rigged system, being at the right place at the right time, fate? I’m not sure. I feel like I’ve been lucky in life. Not super successful but I’ve been able to provide for my family. I feel a lot of times, it doesn't really matter how early on we can be "given the knowledge" if we aren't at a point in our lives to receive it. I find many people know what needs to be done, or have the resources available to figure it out, but don't have the maturity, willingness, or drive to do something different, scary, or hard. I know for me, the world has always been my oyster. I'm smart, physically capable for basically any trade, fast learner, and have good critical thinking and problem solving skills. However, in my youth I was self centered, hard headed, arrogant, and careless lol. I too am working on this progressively, about to be 38 this year. At 24 I was a single sleeping around alcoholic moved back in with my parents, rock bottom moment. But I went to massage therapy school. Like Finn said, develop a TRADE you don’t hate. That got me through the next 10 years of ups & downs. Knowing I could bring people some sort of peace helped me immensely to invite peace into my own life. Also Realizing you don’t have to limit yourself or define your worth by the music you listen to OR how much money you make or have at the moment has really helped me. I still struggle of course, especially comparing myself to successful friends. I was trying to get hired at the company Im at now for months before the pandemic. Must have applied over 20 times. I was a bartender at the time with a STEM degree but no actual experience. When the pandemic hit I got laid off but the company I was applying at needed interns to do mindless boring paperwork stuff. I ended up getting the internship and doing that for about a year, then transferring to the IT department where I work now making solid money (and can practice guitar while on the clock). I think its also important to mention that you should not pass up an opportunity because it is not exactly what you want. The internship sucked and was not in the department I was going for but it lead to a much better opportunity and gave me a chance to prove I can get the job done. Anyway thanks for reading this Finn. I love the channel and hope you are doing well!

@genghis1971 Год назад
I'm a bit older and I can tell you now more than ever attitude and work ethic go a long way. You may have a shitty job, but you should never treat it like a shitty job. I've managed up to 45+ professionals, the majority were older than me. I'm starting to think about retirement now (it's still several years away) and have been a little reflective on my career recently. I dealt with depression for decades and I remember in my 20's and 30's thinking about how I was never going to make any money. I worked within an industry until I decided to go to grad school and found a niche where people didn't exactly work their ass off. I did work my ass off so I was able to move up quickly. I've had much better jobs than I would have ever hoped/guessed. I grew up better off than Finn but as I've gotten older I've realized we would probably have been considered lower/working class. I'm not knocking down millions or anything and in many parts of the country people would probably think I make OK money but it's still a lot to me. 1) Avoid debt and if you have any find a way to pay it off. You're starting out in a hole with debt. Some debt is necessary, you probably need a car to get to and from work. Don't over think it, buy a Toyota Corolla. Yeah, they are boring and slow and you can get cheaper cars, but it will last forever if you take care of it. Drive it until the wheels fall off, my wife and I currently drive 2008 model cars (Corolla & Mazda 3). Get rid of any credit card debt that you have and vow not to get into that debt again. Understand where your money is going and find ways to cut back expenses. 2) If you take anything from what Finn says, you need to realize that you can succeed. Also remember, this is YOUR success, others might look at my life and think "Wow! That guy thinks he's made something of himself? Sad." For me I have succeeded and for the first time in my life I'm actually happy. What you want/envision has nothing to do with what I want. It's easy to get down and think the deck is stacked against you but there are way too many people who have done it. People with less intelligence, work ethic, luck, and personality than you have were able to make it. You can too. Be realistic, if your idea of success requires you to have a private jet and supermodel girlfriends, you will fail. Which ties into: 3) Know yourself and be honest with yourself. Your goal shouldn't be $X, your goal should be to be happy... however YOU define that. There have been studies that show money doesn't bring much satisfaction once you are able to pay your bills, buy some things you want and save a bit. Finn mentioned sales jobs, some people (including me) are not cut out for that type of job. Now you're saying "If they paid me enough, I'll do whatever they want." Yeah, I said that too. That first check is nice but then you start dreading going to sleep on Sunday night because you know what's waiting for you the next morning. Then you start dreading going to bed on Saturday night because then there's only one more day until you have to go back to work. Then you start dreading going to bed on Friday night. Then you can't sleep well any night and you feel like shit all the time. That paycheck doesn't feel so good now. Understand what you are capable of and what does/doesn't work for you. This might require some self reflection at a level you've never done and make you admit some thing you don't want to. 4) It's the most obvious advice but only you can help you. We all come from different backgrounds and have different values, but I can honestly say this to anyone: "Stop doing the shit you shouldn't be doing". Few people can say "I don't know what you're talking about". I don't know what that is for you but deep down you know. No one has honestly said "If I keep drinking heavily, I'll finally get my life turned around". Whatever your issue is, fix it or at least mitigate it. "B-b-but my buddy drinks a lot more than me", that's his problem. You're not responsible for his sorry ass, you're only responsible for your sorry ass. If you're like me, you have enough self-loathing to know the various ways in which you suck. If you are young (let's say in your 30's) and you have the interest/talent for it, I would go into a trade. I've heard people say "I'm too old to change careers" when they were like 30, what are you going to do, just grind it out for another 30-35 years? Just another several decades of being miserable, piece of cake. Since this is a music channel, the lines in Baker Street "another year and then you'll be happy, just one more year and then you'll be happy, but your crying now" have always stuck with me. I only throw the age thing out there because there might be apprenticeship requirements that will cut into your career. I've made the comment often that if I had to do it all over again, I would have dropped out of high school, gotten a GED, and gone to work in a trade. I would have started earning decent money earlier and overall I think I would have been happier or at least lessened the depression over the years. It wasn't until I was in my 40's and had some time and income to start hobbies that I realized I enjoyed working with my hands. I think one reason men in particular have issues with work is that we have no sense of accomplishment. My favorite job was probably working in a store in college. I walked into a stockroom full of boxes at the beginning of my shift and left with those boxes gone and the floor swept. I could actually see what I did. Now I go to work, stare at spreadsheets or other documents all day and can't tell you if I got anything done. In the past, men would break there backs in a coal mine, but at the end of the day they could see what they accomplished. Well, I'm rambling now. You will fail and make mistakes, just be sure to learn from those and you'll make it through. Better yet, learn from other people's failures and mistakes. There will be setbacks, you'll make it through those too. You'll have to accept things that are unfair, you'll have to be the bigger person, and you'll have to smile while eating shit. Everyone has to do that from time to time, but be prepared to move on if it happens too much.

To Finn's point, about six months ago I quit the retail job that had me on the brink of suicide to start pursuing my dream of becoming a writer. I have sent out at least 10 resumes a day to any online publisher I came across from sex blogs to motorsport news sites and even some RU-vidrs. Alongside that, I have been writing articles and posting them to my Facebook page, because my broke ass can't afford a website at the moment. Today I did an interview with an online travel publication I will know later today or tomorrow if I start on Monday. Even if I get this job I won't rest there because then the grind of writing my novel series starts. I think the only failure you can have is when you stop trying. I think a lot of people bet too much on their first attempt, what we don't realize is it takes hundreds of thousands of attempts before anyone succeeds. Stephen King was rejected by every publisher he applied to for years before someone said yes to Carrie. Like Finn said it only takes 1 yes, what I would like to add is that it does take 1 yes but also an infinite amount of nos.

The key to making good money is doing something useful for other people. We lose track of that and tend to think of “what do I want to do?”, “What’s MY dream job?”, “What’s MY passion?” All that is secondary to the real question “what do other people want/need and will pay money for?” Unless you are paying yourself what you want is sort of irrelevant in the context of making money.

As a 42 year old electrician, I agree with Finn 100%. This won’t be for all of you guys, but if you really want to be pointed in a certain direction. Please look into becoming a tradesmen. We are a dying breed, and there’s not enough young fresh blood coming in to replace the amount of guys who are retiring. I know construction doesn’t sound glamorous, but as a electrician, I’m not only in high demand with electrical companies, but just with everyday people who needs something done in their house, or small business. So there is a lot of side work to make money from. Also if you like music, and have an artistic mind, that will apply to building things, it’s just a different type of environment. Every company is different and every city is a different job market, but a lot of these companies will pay for your schooling. Some might be online courses, are a school you go to one night a week for about 5 hours, not to mention as you move forward through your apprenticeship, you should be getting raises every 6 months to a year. Even if you have never worked with a tool in your life, just be honest and tell them, and if you have drive and your willing to learn, we are willing to train you. None of us was born with this talent, we all had to learn it, and master it over time, so we don’t expect you to know what you don’t know. Something else to think about it, is that time is going to continue to move by, and before you know it, you’ll be much older, and you’ll be getting passed up by people much younger than you, so you might as well use that time to be building towards something. I graduated from high school in 2000, and I remember that day like yesterday, so I promise, things might suck now being at the bottom, but eventually you’ll be in a much higher position. Just be patient. Like I said, time will eventually pass by, and looking back on today, will feel like yesterday. One more thing, the world is not against you. None of us has the time and energy to be trying to fuck up your life. It’s all in your mind and your attitude.

Great advice!! I love this! After college, I started playing in bands again, but at the same time, I was working 2 dishwasher jobs to make ends meet. It was absolutely exhausting trying to work 2 jobs all while playing gigs and staying out until 3 am. I finally had enough of that lifestyle, as it was taking a toll on my sanity. I knew my passion was music, and quite frankly it still is. But I decided I'd take it in another avenue. I decided I wanted to start teaching guitar. I started doing freelance work for a few years going around town, which eventually landed me at Long & McQuade (a music store in Canada) and now I do my teaching there. I also teach bass guitar, Mandolin and ukulele! Hard work certainly does pay off, my friends. Keep up the videos!

This is the video that I needed to watch. I'm in my 40s, a professional visual artist, but have felt stuck for the past 6 or so years, because of depression, a child with chronic health issues etc. and have just felt in a slump with my career which lost momentum a long time ago. Interestingly enough, I was doing all 3 things on your list straight out of grad school, I had a skill other people wanted (making art the galleries wanted to show), I was hustling all the time (eventually got in some pretty prestigious galleries), and I was doing it for quite a few years... but to be honest, the thing that really killed my career was a combination of feeling burned out, depression, self doubt, and my child developing chronic illnesses, which essentially made me feel exhausted all the time, killing the motivation and drive I had in the past. I feel like I've been clawing myself back to my career, but it feels like climbing an ice covered mountain, but I know that the 3 steps in the video really do work.

This is a great video, Finn. There are so many people I know who need to hear this advice. Unfortunately, many people (myself included) don't learn to put passion aside and learn a valuable skill until they're in their late 20s or into their 30s...if they ever figure that out. I'm 29. I spent my late teens to my mid-20s trying to avoid hard work and discomfort at all cost. Every job I worked, I got by as just an average worker, while being a very average student in college. It wasn't until the past few years that I really started to focus on building marketable skills. Its rough hitting 27 and realizing that the few skills you've acquired over years of being mediocre aren't worth that much. I wouldn't say I wasted my early to mid 20s, however, there are so many things I regret and wish I could go back and change. My advice to anyone (especially those under 25) is to stop worrying about being uncomfortable and stop trying to find your passion. The things you're passionate about will change over time and, generally, passion isn't a sturdy enough foundation to build a career on. Also, to be clear, having fun is perfectly fine, but it shouldn't be what you build your life around when you're not financially stable yet.
@jadedbreadncircus9159
@jadedbreadncircus9159 Год назад
I learned that at 34. Trouble is, when over 600 apps didn't land me a tech job, my lack of passion for UX just let that die with the debt remaining. 40 now, playing blastbeats on a pad in a studio apt, paying educational debt with Jimmy Johns. Unfortunately, from the second I picked up a drumstick age 16, my passion has always been drums. I have not played in a band since 2009, but I always practice. I treated drumming as a career from day 1...but only drum skill. A lot of depression & ptsd reasons surround hiding myself socially, & I could never network effectively. I wish I had more fun playing music instead of taking it seriously, because it never paid off.
@edshanks2189
@edshanks2189 Год назад
@@jadedbreadncircus9159 that's rough, man. Sorry to hear that. I certainly wasn't saying that passion is meaningless. Obviously there are plenty of cases of people not following their passion and regretting it later in life. Generally speaking, based on my limited life experience, it seems to be better to find something of value that you're good at and pursue that over passion, but that doesn't guarantee that it always will work out. Not trying to tell you what to do or anything, but have you thought about getting certified to be a forklift operator or getting a CDL? Low upfront cost and the potential for a good payoff. There are certainly other options, but those come to mind.

@@edshanks2189 I’ve talked if this with my dad. The tech career was chosen to satisfy my creative side. I’m not someone who tries hard at everything, just what I care about. I’d rather go untrained into a cage match than do office temp work all day. Same with the warehouse work I’ve already done & swore off. It’s where all my injuries came from. I did consider bartender work, but usually when I think of deviating from my path, I just choose to use more focus on less things instead of new goals. Given the sunk cost fallacy I’m experiencing with the tech industry, I can’t quit because web design is now a skill I’m interested in & can’t leave. I have to solve my networking bottleneck.

I’ve gotta chime in on this, because u had the same tactic as a kid getting into a career. After I graduated high school, I moved to Tacoma from the coast. I wanted to work in automotive repair, and I didn’t wanna work at some scab shop or jiffy lube. I had a passion for cars but very minimal experience overall. There was a Chevy dealer highering for a lube tech, and I went in the following day to apply. They had already filled the position, but I got a chance to meet the manager and give him my resume anyways. I called them or arrived at the shop every morning for 2 weeks. I did this right when they opened, every single day. After 2 weeks I called in and the manager Rick answered the phone asking if it was Justin. I said yes it was and he told me to just come in the next Monday to start work. They didn’t actually have a position for me at first, but he said if I was this committed he would make it work for me. I worked there for 3 years and became a cented tech for General Motors through that dealer. Persistence always pays off!

I thought the system was rigged... "all u need is that 1 person to give you a chance..." _me blindly throwing a billion darts in the air_ . Hey, it worked... > I < worked. What a lost child I was. But at least I can say I lived life. For me... If I did have to imagine my dad still being around, I'd think he'd want me to still be w/ someone old. But when they find out I just liked the misfits 🙄... instead, my mom would give me a dirty look & say something like,"how'd that work out for you?" Or if I got in trouble, they for sure would've prob just let me rot.. Then if they'd find out I was doing a little bit better for Myself, also her: see? I always knew u had it in u. U know, We always think about u being out in this world by completely yourself... & it just breaks us. But we trust you. & you've just always been tough. You get that from me, you know? I'm paraphrasing & idk when the hell she said something like that to me or what situation I was in. But I told my older daughter this (who they've only seen once but only bc I took her up there, to ohio) & she was equally as disgusted. 40 yrs old & just had another kid. I always gotta be rewinding time, & facing "setbacks"... 😔 wish I never met him. Like how honestly do u marry someone plan the whole fam thing & then pretty much fn bail? Not that we were ever the happiest or even made that much sense together but I guess it's still the little kid in you / adulting in u thats screaming, "make it work..." If the universe could talk as a collective: stfu! Him comparing himself to the first dad tho. Is ugh. I got 2 kids from 2 different dads now. And they're both not sh... so go me. Anyways, I guess like that psychiatrist says, I do believe you just need a fire lit under ur arse. I'm not trying to do some glow up. But someone has to be there for them. I do glow ups for me. & somexs I tell myself to humble & watch myself. But then again, alotta of the xs when I gotta deal w/ selfish, self indulgent, projective, overcompensating, unoriginal, not driven, not strong, no self discipline, enabling, ignorant, abusive, hating, & everything else negative type of ppls I bet I do come off as arrogant. Im sorry I believe in myself more than u do u? & that in all my poorness I didn't want to be poor?lol, Idk but Somexs when ppl don't have ish left to say about me, they gotta start making up stuff just to take up space somehow. Alot of the things I ever took actual interests in always scared me off too. & they still do. & its never ending. I never signed up for imaginary competitions. & although I like hearing different perspectives, right now, somexs, it's just your experience isn't mine. Mine isn't urs. I'm not the 1 who's mad about this. & maybe u do got more experiences ...in ur certain areas. But that was your journey. My experiences are mine. Don't hold it over my head bc u had to do wever. But if u needed to feel special I guess in ur victimhood, ure really just 1 of many. & I've seen way more "bad asses." Depending on who I talk to, I switch up my speech & its all depending on how they talk to me. Bc experience... 🤗. Actually, I'm glad I didn't hafta go through your experiences. That truly must've sucked. I'm young. I dont know better.. I'm trying to be vague while talking about life & this is silly messy. Bc I dont think all the "gnarly" ppl who got their patches & badges & what not to prove their ish ever enjoyed their days of bad assery... but humbleness. That should be like a thing! anyways how about this 1 old dudes been questioning me about my education. Then the next moment he's talking about how education is such a sinful nature bc its just a lifestyle & blahzaye. I really had to turn my body completely like stfu. I dont want to say out loud stfu but stfu. And stop begging for attention. Knowing damn well I was signing up to take an exam. Like wow dude, you sound like my mother in law. ...Next thing u know, I'm sinning bc im doing it for the kids. Bc im entertaining the flesh? U should've saw me some yrs back then... if u really wanted to see mee entertaining the flesh. But hey? At least I wasn't ever consumed by a lifestyle.. I swear somexs, I have no1 to look up to. & everything destroys my out look. Now my ex husband... makes me look at rockers & rappers like 😑 that's unicorn material right there... not. Not in that r.model way either. Just that I bet they're shitty fam men always fd up on something. & I guess opinions r like a holes & everyone's got 1. But I mean, at least I tried. Not just the a.hole part but just the u know I had to actually study ... just to deal w/ ur ass..., right? It really wasn't actually all that fun & limelighty idk the word. But plz not make this a competition just bc you're bored w/ yourselves & im the only 1 left to ramble to. I will fn push u down the stairs & steal ur life lock! All of u! Wever that's called. I won't really but see if anyone else will b.sit ... ur arse 🔄. In my head it was deeper. .ha. I just didn't want type anymore ok, I'm done editing now. F it

One of the best videos. I chose chemistry over music because I knew it was something that I was good at and it was a skill that was in demand. Now I have labs consistently contacting ME because not much of older gen z/young millennials are pursuing stem jobs right now. A lot of the older scientists are starting to retire and there’s lots of money to be made if you find the right lab. Sometimes it’s also faking it until you make it. Do you suck at your skill right now? Sure, but half of your job is the ability to work well with others. You’ll improve at your paid skill over time. It’s the same as going to the gym or practicing an instrument.

Hey fellow chemist! What kind of lab work are you doing? I'm also an older Gen Z working in stem.

Great video man. Another point: once you start making some good habits, you’ll be more motivated to make more. That snowball effect can change your life pretty fast. I got in a financial hole earlier this year and it was a blessing in disguise. Forced me to stop eating out every day, which made me say “Well if I’m overhauling my diet to save money, I might as well start eating healthy.” Now I’m saving hundreds of dollars a month, losing weight, and getting good at cooking all at the same time. Those are three pretty big life skills I had been neglecting. It’ll gave me the perspective and kick in the ass i needed to recognize where i was slacking off in life, and the confidence to tackle those bad habits too.

5:42 thank you for saying that. Some people need to hear that there is nothing wrong with having a regular job. I'm 20 and seem to have put up with the fact that I won't be playing guitar in a band for a living. Sometimes I have second thoughts about making the decision to go to college and not taking a chance with music. The thought of living a life with regrets is scary. But at those moments I try to remember that you don't necessarily need to play guitar in metalcore band to live a happy life.

While we often have differences about music, this advice is gold Finn. We're about the same age and I've had multiple careers over the years and about to embark on a new one. Never started any of them with a qualification always started with a job and then got the qualifications if needed while working (usually paid for by the company). It's about pounding the pavement, second never leave a job if you don't have another to go to, and third never burn your bridges. I've had career changes because my then boss knew someone in the industry I was looking to get into and he vouched for me to get a job I wasn't qualified for. New boss happy to take me on because his mate says I'm a fast learner and hard worker. Multiple careers, dozens of employers, it boils down to the same fundamentals. Work hard, learn, never be too proud to ask for help or ask for feedback on what you can do better. And most importantly avoid HR. Those fuckers know nothing about anything, it's why they work in HR.

Thanks Finn. I’m a filmmaker and 100% agree with this. I was a fresh from film school graduate trying to make a short film that wasn’t a student film level and not using film crew from other students but rather actual people in the industry. I did what you said and emailed all the cinematographers of people I looked up to. In the end the guy who shot our film worked on fast and furious and other big films and offered to shoot our film for free if he can shoot it on his 16mm film camera! The short film ended up being made for 50k. It goes to show sending those annoying emails to people who I used to think “they’ll never answer me” Ends up someone does And you can make what you want! And now I’m trying to make a feature and when my script is done I’m going to try and source funding from countries fundings or producers using the exact same method! Great to see you can apply this path in almost all mediums . This is so relevant ! You’re a real one!

Hey FInn, Great message as always. I'm glad you brought up rejection because I feel that's a huge part of anyone's success. You will be rejected no matter what in any path you choose, but that's okay. I'm thankful for all the rejections I've had, because looking back those jobs weren't in my best interest or aligned with my values. People need to be open minded and flexible. I've worked in fields such as restaurants, welding/custom fabrication, farm work, to florist. All very different, but I've acquired valuable skills from all of them and I'm thankful. This year I've been offered to do research with geophysicists and do field work in the arctic, and all I had to do was send a simple email. My only qualifications are 1 1/2 semesters of welding school at a small town community college, but that's okay they still said yes. Maybe this isn't the path to maximizing financial growth, but I believe it's a path to success and longevity.

Love this talk Finn. I 100% agree with what you said on work ethic and finding a skill that people find value in and will pay you for. All I would add to this is under the ‘living within your means’ part. As well as not spending money on so many luxuries, try to keep your property costs down as much as possible. If you are a couple rent a room instead of an apartment for 3-5 years and you will can build financial security quicker.
