Hey Everyone,
At the beginning of the year, when I quit my 9-5 job, I stated in a vlog that I was going full time with RU-vid and I was planning to embark on further motorcycle training.
I wanted to cover road, track, offroad - really as many disciplines as I could!
I thought about doing my IAM qualification to try and test myself and of course wanted to learn lots in the meantime!
After 2 months of delays starting the course - due to illness and being unable to ride a bike, I started my IAM journey with my mentor and first observer - Dave Lindley!
If you would like to read a more in-depth breakdown of this day: please refer to my website for the blog/diary.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this vlog!
If you are interested in embarking on your IAM journey, there is info here:
www.iamroadsmart.com/courses/...
I was not paid to attend this course and all views are my own
I hope you enjoy!

Hey Everyone! I did these rides with BRAM (Bury and Rochdale Advanced Motorists) and they're a good bunch! You can find out more about them here: www.bramgroup.co.uk

Fantastic that you are highlighting how good this training is. My husband and I both completed this year and successfully took our test last month. We couldn’t believe how dedicated, encouraging and helpful the observers are. I would recommend 100% that everyone should do this & nerves are normal! The ‘system’ will stay with me for every ride.

I’m laughing because that was my issue, speeding! Then I went the opposite way on my test 😮 however I am pleased to say I passed and got a first 😜 you’ll smash this Kate and I’m sure you will learn and benefit from it, I certainly did and my husband did who’s been riding for a long time, and now an observer. Looking forward to your next update 👏🏼

Did this just over a year ago as a stepping stone to Blood Biking and I am so glad I did the qualification. It makes you more confident, safe and able on 2 wheels. You'll enjoy it more as the weeks progress. It's not about riding slowly or defensively but more about being aware of everything around you and making progress. Speed gates were a real steep learning curve for me too!!

im thinking of doing the same thing for the exact same reason. I got my ERS a couple of months back - but id like to get an IAM qualification too, as part of my intention to continually try to master bikecraft/roadcraft etc. The possibility of maybe doing bloodbiking at a future point just gives a drive/reason to do it. Im not really a biker thats into stunts, wheelies or loud exhausts (which makes me sound very dull hehe!) but I love riding my bike and the whole experience - adrenaline rush is a scary place for me - and i wont enjoy my ride if chunks of it are spent being frightnened all the time. Anyway - extra qualifications like ERS and the IAM series I believe give improved risk management when on the road - which can only be a good thing i reckon. :-)

'Up my chuff'. I always come away from your videos an expanded vocabulary! Educational in all senses of the word. I haven't done my IAM, but hated being observed on my standard test; it didn't help that there was a particular instructor who was on my back in more ways than one. Didn't help with my confidence at all, but I can imagine an instructor like Dave would help much more. Thanks Kate.

Good luck with your training . I've got my ROSPA test next week. I found it can be mentally draining taking it all in but after a few rides out with my observer it has transformed my riding . Hopefully I won't mess the test up . Fingers crossed

Passed my IAM Roadsmart earlier this year. Always interesting to watch others on their journey(s). In the vids of yours I have seen you aren't shy with progress...You also have additional skills in your back pocket too 👍 As highlighted by your observer (David) you look confident when you ride....I am sure we will see more development of obs scanning & restraint (at times) as this series progresses. Curious to see whether your offsiding gets tweaked prior to ticking boxes for I.A.M Roadsmart Test....I have seen your Rapid vid & aware of Ryan's background btw 😉 A lot of riders relate, respect & look up to you ! I really hope this series encourages more fresh blood involved in advanced activities & circles. Some have preconceptions of advanced riders/drivers...For the record I smile when I ride & don't have a Day-Glo one piece riding suit...Oh & I don't ride a GS btw (couldn't resist- sorry ) 😉😅 Thanks for sharing. Ride Safe 👍🏍

I'm going to watch this with interest even though I already know the result (I've seen a video that's since been deleted 😂) As a newly qualified Observer it is quite interesting seeing the perspective of an associate again. Even though I'm sure Dave told you to just ride like you normally do, it's quite easy to forget how associates still feel quite nervous. Great idea to do this series and I hope it encourages more people to try advanced rider training 👍

Great Vlog,as usual. This is all so pertinent to me for I’ve had a 40+ year hiatus from motorcycles. I’ve been mountain biking and skiing. So, back in my 20s we road like idiots! There was no protocol for position 1,2 and 3! You just opened the throttle until you got scared! I picked up a 900 Tiger last April. My goal is to not get hurt and vlogs like yours are a huge inspiration. That being said, the Idaho motorcycle manual gives us 15 mph grace while passing. And there’s an unwritten grace of 5 mph always.

I’m so glad you said you were nervous!! My first ride I was crapping it, plus there were two as one was a newly qualified observer wanting to pick up tips. I’m in the middle of my observed rides, weather and road conditions are putting things on a back burner but as I’m being taught, safety over everything - never do something that puts you in danger. Will be following to see how you find the course. Stay safe! 😊

Nice one, using your IPSGA and TUG information. Glad you are doing this, I became a IAM (Truck, Car and Bike) member about 32 years ago and been a member of IAM since without retaking test, although did a six-week refresher with AAMC on the Saturdays from Bristol 2008-9 ish, lived up there for 10 years, and later joined CAM here in Cornwall. I am not a member of CAM now but keep up my IAM yearly fee member. It's hard to find time to for the group rides etc. I crashed a brand new Z1000SX, snappy throttle, I gave it a bit to pick bike up, like I would have on my Hayabusa no problem, and front went away from me on cold dry surface, leathers dug into road compacting my shoulder and breaking ribs in 2012 on a test ride doing about 15mph on a cold Feb day going around a well-known round-about (I have a theory bike dipped in quick and leant, lots saying the first bike did this, I owned 2020 Ninja 1000SX and nothing like it) So don't get too overconfident, broke five ribs, can happen to anyone but just saying I think I'm a good rider, but we must always watch out. Shocked me, happened so quick, how did I feel😞£640 later!

Interesting video. I passed my IAM many years ago and then joined my local RoSPA group 6 years ago as a refresher to get rid of any bad habits after years of riding (which reminds me that I've got to book my next retest). To be fair, so many speed limit signs are almost completely hidden by overgrown hedges these days that it can be tricky to spot them at all, let alone in enough time for a planned slow down!

Well done Kate. I've just completed my IAM advanced after over 3o years of motorcycling as I figured any addidtional training can't be a bad thing. Your clearly a very competent rider already and from what I saw on this vlog you did a very decent first assessed ride. Best advice I was given through the course is to ride your own ride, taking on board the feedback and learning points obv's, but take the chance when you can to show your capbilities either to you rassessor or the examiner. Worked for me as I managed to get a F1rst and I reckon you could too if you want it. Best of luck.

You are just lovely and you should very proud of yourself for being you. I can also say that the camera does lie, as you are even more beautiful in real life. Here in the States once you get a Motorcycle License, your good to go the rest of your Life. No taking the Test again or anything. Anyway, I think you did Great considering the Pressure you were under. They do have Riding Courses here in the U.S. and I plan on taking a few. I grew up Riding and have Ridden Bikes my whole Life. I’m 62 now and want to take some Off-road Ridding Courses on the R1200GS. It’s a Big Bike and a lot Larger from what I’m used to Riding Off Road. So it’s a good idea to take all the Courses I can. You are a confident rider Kate, but if doing a course helps you learn 1 thing that could save your life, that can only be a good thing right? Advanced riding courses do have a certain amount of stigma attached, safety has almost become a dirty word. But safe does not have to mean boring or slow. Advanced riding courses can improve our skill levels confidence and enjoyment of riding. Win win :) I thought you did a very good 1st ride. Following this series of videos with interest 👌

That was great Kate! I’ve just passed my IAM and so much of what you experienced resonated with me. You might think about turning your sat-nav off. If you don’t need it for navigation then it is a distraction. It was interesting that you missed a speed limit change but saw it on the sat nav. I wonder if you’d have seen the road sign if the sat nav hadn’t been on? Good luck with it, I’m sure you’ll fly through it!
@UsernameKate
@UsernameKate Год назад
In a real world situation, my nav doesn't move from my bike. I think you should be able to become an advanced rider whether it's there or not personally but that's just my opinion. I use it as well because where my camera is placed, it's easier to read the digital speed on the nav than the small analogue speed and makes life easier. I also usually disregard the speed limits on the nav because they're usually wrong but in that instance, it helped 😊

Kate, great to see you've got started on this (though probably a while ago). It's natural to feel the presure when you first start out. You'll soon get used to the mirrors thing. It does have a purpose, by improving your 360 degree, in head, image of what is going on around you. Was there no mention of The System and IPSGA? Or did it just not make the edit? A good exercise next time you are out is to verbalise every road sign you see (either in your head or actually say it). There's so much information out there, other than just speed limits, that many riders don't make use of. Look forward to seeing some more of this series. I've some demo rides and footage of riders I've Observed which you, or others may find useful.

Interesting thing that you both missed. When you pulled up behind the L plate driver you stoped smack bang behind the middle of the car. You should be over to the drivers side mirror. One si that they can see there is s bike behind them and to if you are going yo get rammed from behind you have an escape route.

how much cost this training?

The Advanced Rider Course costs £175. This will get you the Course Manual, a year's membership of both IAM RoadSmart and your local Group, the final test fees and a number of Observed rides (typically 6-12) to help you to reach an Advanced standard.

Is this for a government endorsement? What sort of cost is it if any, if it’s a government endowment for you license I’m sure glad it’s so much different in the U.S.

No, it is a further series of training rides under a road safety charity called IAM Roadsmart that carry on your further motorcycle coaching once you have passed your DVSA (Government) motorcycle test. A sort of self improvement if you like. Another similar organisation in UK is ROSPA. I have done it and am an Observer, I generally like to match our bikes up so I may be out with an Associate on my Gixer 1000 for example. It's all good fun with fast road skill days on UK tracks too. Many groups have regular ride outs and annual tours.

There is an American version. It's based around the British system but with the obvious differences. I think it's something like 'American Advanced Driving Association' but I may be wrong with the name.

@Usernamekate I'm going through the advanced training myself right now and my first ride was just like yours, missed limit signs, wrong position, etc, etc. anyone who thinks they are brilliant on a bike needs to take a free observed ride with these guys and they'll soon realize they're not as good as they thought. riding to and keeping to specific speed limits without going over or under, always being in the correct position, cornering at the limit where possible, watching for the limit point on bends none of that is easy. I'd say if people do the course and don't pass the test and give up they'd still have learned a great deal more than if they'd never done it. nerve wracking? yes. Frustrating? yes. Annoying at times? very. Helpful observers? definitely and they tell it like it is but that's only cos they want you to get it right which is why it's annoying at times.
