I love how well barbarian and paladin multiclass together. I see them as two friends one feral and ferocious and the other one pretends to be prim and proper but are also a little feral.
Idk. Paladin and Barbarian may be two parts of the same whole, but that doesn't mean mixing them is great. The builds are so different. As a frontliner, neither calculation is great and your dex is bad enough advantage isn't reliable. Someone sell me on this multiclass!
Personally, I would have made Wisdom the dump stat. Mordred is pretty damn agile and acrobatic despite the heavy armor, and her short fuse combined with her inability to understand why Artoria denied her the throne are what lead to her rebellion and death in the first place.
As a regular consumer of Fate and Type Moon, welcome back to the madness. Such a fun character, strong build and if you play to character, the in campaign character arc pretty much writes itself, plus or minus being the resurrected spirit thing.
I would like to run a Grail War, but I don't know what system to use. What do you think would fit the best? I plan to use servants pre-made by me and the players will be the mages, PvP style. Or I don't know if I try to find 14 players for them to play the servants too 😂
@@fredcavalcante1887 Well, gonna start by assuming you know the basics of a Holy Grail War: the structure, the politics, subterfuge, the dynamics between Servant and Master, the Grail, the Root, ect. From there, if you have players already lined up for the idea of a HGW, ask them. Some might want to play Masters, some might prefer being a Servant, or maybe you got a group that all skew in one direction. Unless you have a preference on which they play, then just be sure they're cool with it. Depending on how you're formatting the HGW, you'll likely want to let your players take actions in secret due to how it is a competition. You'll likely want an area map lined up ahead of time for them to explore and hide the locations of players from each other. There is also the unfortunate fact that not all Servants are created equal. For an example, Shakespeare is the same Class as Medea, but comparing them is an insult to Medea. Noble Phantasms and smart players can help bridge that gap, but even Classes and builds in D&D aren't created equally. Then you'll need to figure out some way to handle Noble Phantasms. They can range from the niche to the absurd. The Type Moon wiki has a list if you need inspiration. Last up is that every HGW has some kind of twist it its format that, be it an additional servant, some secret plan a faction put into motion or just the Grail itself acting up. You don't really have to use this last point, but it can be seen as more exciting than a simple tournament.
Fun fact about Mordred, she has 2 noble phantasms, the second is actually her helmet, it makes it so that no one who she didnt tell her identity to will recognize her while she wears it with her armor, if she takes ir off while her armor is on which is required for her noble phantasm, it is possible to be recognized, simply not wearing armor at all also makes her unrecognizable, it's called Secret of Pedigree: Helm of Infidelity
Fun fact, you could get cast off armour and run as a Paladin until you run out of spell slots, then take an action to toss it so you can Rage. It would flavour quite nicely with her ability to summon and dismiss her armour at will to.
Honorary shoutout to Dragonborn letting you grab a bit of mana Burst early. One of Artoria's forms has dragon horns anyways so if you really really wanted it _could_ work
Mordrid, like Arthur (female type), is the very definition of a blitz tank. I love it. Also, I'm surprised no one has tried this at one of my monthly one-shot games. Though I have used a similar build with a half-drow. He was swole chainsaw.
Personally, I think Astolfo would work well as a Lore Bard/Hexblade Warlock. He gets the hippogriff with Magical Secrets. Mash would be a Paladin/Fighter of some combination, maybe Devotion and Cavalier.
Tulok: "I'd say Clarent is a greatsword" Myself watching the video having just finished a Sentinel Comics campaign where I was a toku-style superhero descended from Arthur dual-wielding it alongside Caliburn: "...y-yeah..."
Align your fates and raise that sharp sabers to the skies because we are here to commit some betrayal! And while characters like Tangle the lemur encourage teamwork and camaraderie (which would make a good build, Sir Tulok please?), some kings truly need an unhealthy dose of sword wounds. Birthed by the really messed interaction of Arthuria and Morgan le Fay, Mordred, the totally not a druid boy, admired the legacy of the perfect knight and was in extasis when she realized the blood of the king was in her veins, but when Arthuria rejected her she sword vengeance (totally not because the king killed a love interest) and joined Morgana against Camelot, where the tragic journey for king and daughter would reach its end.
This is quite interesting, I'm recalling now a game I was in. The DM was quite flexible with the 'limitations' of Barbarian Rage being only for activating or casting spells and did not fret about it being affected in armor. So rolls in our our paladin, a Vengeance Oath, used Haste as their Action and then Raged with their Bonus Action. The paladin was of Kalisdar? heritage. Gave them resistance to Psychic Damage. Also took the path of the Totem Warrior and RPed it that their armor had the tattoos and symbols of their Primal Path. So what did our party have? A damn near unstoppable juggernaut tank of pain, fury, and a lot of heavy smites. It was an epic campaign and her character was: 16 Paladin of Vengeance and 4 Totem Barbarian.
I always wondered if you were going to do Mordred; I guess today is that day. Minus the stuff that Reborn came with I got pretty close. Now I can live out those FGO Mana Burst, Cigarette Lion, high speed crits.
Hehe big damage build go bonk. But really, this is exactly what I was looking for from a Mordred build-- didn't expect Barbarian, but I've gotta admit that it certainly fits well. And, of course, bonus points for including the Sabre-typical ability to ride anything.
Thank you, Tulok. I'm trying to make a build for an "American Gladiator" inspired character and was thinking of going the Paladin/Barbarian route. This video will help me make some decisions.
I remember playing a lvl 20 Paladin Oath of Vengeance based on them. It was fun. Also for those wondering about her Noble Phantasm, Clarent Blood Arthur, there is a 5th level spell Paladins use called Destructive Wave that kinda has that vibe
Hey, if you're about to comment something along the lines of "I'd love to see x servant build" we've got literally every servant in the english version of Fate Grand Order as a D&D build over on our tumblr, Fate and Phantasms. But also keep pestering Tulok for a Mash build I really want to see his take on Mash bc he always does a great job with servants.
This is great, and I can see a lot of promise in it was half expecting them to be a treachery (not very thematic but does fit with their title), conquest or even vengeance pally though considering their lore and the skill set that it gives. One work around for the heavy armour which is still very thematic and should your DM allow would be to have cast off armour that way you can still have the bonuses of barb should your stats allow and the AC of a pally. Personally I'd say Clarent is a long sword as well so it could allow for unarmed fighting to be taken since Mordred also loves just a good bare knuckle brawl. But all in all you've helped me build on my own Mordred build and given me a couple more ideas for other Fate characters.
I love that mordrid is a paladin who is serving a necromancer. Edit: a hasted paladin is terrifying. I once did 107 damage in one turn to the enemy we were fighting and they ran away.
seriously I love Mordred, and they're such a well written tragic character who I empathize with due to my own issues with an abusive father (all of Camelot in Fate is a Tragedy and every character in it is kind of a tragic protagonist)
She is one of the reasons that Britain collapsed and basically changed world history forever you don’t do that without slaughtering a lot of people which she did
@@JohnShepherd117 Nope, nothing wrong! jokes aside, I know XD. The whole point of Fate's Camelot lore is everyone is a tragic hero, almost everyone fucked up somewhere along the line, and it was always going to end in a tragic disaster from the moment Artoria gave up emotions for the greater good, sacrificing themself for the needs of the many. Mordred's Tragedy is about hero worship and what a broken pedestal can do to someone, and about the dangers of loving without understanding. They were a quick-grown homunculus clone, never given proper emotional understanding or support and placed in the court as a ticking time bomb. But the plan went off the rails when they became completely and utterly, blindly and unquestionably loving of a King who could never return that feeling. So when Mordred was finally informed of their relation to Artoria, they saw it as amazing news- they were the child to their idol. And Artoria, a cold logic machine of a King who could not understand the human heart, told them they would refuse to recognize them, breaking Mordred's heart. When the people rebelled, they put Mordred at the head of their army, and at Camlann Mordred confronted Artoria- who spurned them again and said they would never be worthy before impaling them and turning their back on Mordred's last attempt to get some comfort or recognition. Only then did Mordred's corpse animate and lethally wound Artoria. Mordred isn't evil. They never were. They were incredibly and deeply hurt and never taught to understand the difference because Morgan needed a tool, not a child. Like I said, EVERY character in Fate Camelot is the protagonist of their own personal tragedy.
@@Malicebane huh I honestly thought you were one of those Mordred was innocent and did nothing wrong and Artoria was the one who doomed Britain type but that is actually a very good synopsis of the fall of Britain every one screwed up one way or the other personally tho I think Morgan is the most responsible since if Mordred was born from Guinevere like she was supposed to be a lot of mistakes would be undone
@@JohnShepherd117 oh yeah, for sure. Nah, I was just memeing honestly. I love fate and Camelot lore and just cause Mordred is my favorite Saber doesn't mean I'm not willing to be objective. Morgan's definitely eh most responsible since she actively took steps to instigate the fall of Camelot, but part of Artoria's whole tragedy in Fate has always read to me as "A King can NOT be a king without emotions and the ability to understand the human heart, no matter how logical they are." By being forced to give up her emotions in order to draw Caliburn in the first place, Camelot was doomed to fall one way or the other eventually- but Artoria's desire was a noble one and I would never legitimately lay the blame at her feet for everything bad that happened.
Dude. I love this build! Mordred is so fucking badass! Thank you for this! I normally roll my stats. So hopefully thing will go well. But seriously I love this build like I said. Thank you again for sharing this!
God, I have always loved the Fate series and its myriad spin-offs because it is just such a great premise. It makes you think about which historical figure or myth you'd want, which type of servant they'd be, and what kind of powers they'd have. (Edgar Allan Poe Servant when?) Now, in an attempt to both feed the algorithm and wildly speculate on what builds could possibly come next: Banished from the Hero’s Party: Gideon Ragnason (Apothe-carries the Team) My Hero Academia: Kyoka Jiro (Hey Now, She’s a Rock Star) Records of Ragnarok: Adam (Fights Gods for His Children) One Piece: Nami (Stole Everything) Naruto: Hinata Hyuga (Gentle Fists, Big Damage) Smash Bros: Piranha Plant (Has the Munchies) Overwatch: Reaper (Is the Ultimate Edgelord) Mortal Kombat: Johnny Cage (Star of Stage, Screen & Table Top) Dark Souls: Gwyn, Lord of Cinder (Is Walking on Sunshine) Stray: The Cat (Furry Revolutionary) Mass Effect: Jack (Subject-Zero Fs Given) FNaF: Security Breach: Gregory (Survives the Night) Sifu: The Student (A Monk for All Ages) Monkey Island: Guybrush Threepwood (Is King of the Pirates) Disney: Gaston (Toxic Masculinity) Dreamworks: Jack Frost (More than Gender-Bent Elsa) Maya and the Three: Rico (The Greatest Wizard Who Ever Lived) The Librarians: Colonel Eve Baird (Guardian of Nerds) Leverage: Nathan Ford (Masterminds a Theft) House: Dr. House (It’s Not Lupus) Scooby-Doo: Velma Dinkley (Found a Clue! Jinkies!) DC: Hero: Casey Jones (He’s Wearing Hockey Pads) DC: Villain: Livewire (Shock Jock) Marvel: Hero: Nick Fury (Assembles Avengers) Marvel: Villain: Whiplash (Knows that Bird is the Word)
Character inspiration aside. This feels like a great build to throw on to an NPC commander, before a massive army vs army battle. Maybe one who your PCs have heard amazing things about but have never seen fight before.
For the fighting style, I'd actually say go with unarmed combatant. Wisdom should be Mordred's 8 and that rules out them multiclassing into monk, so this brings in a bit more of her rough, underhanded, unorthodox fighting style.
Still pulling for Eglentine Price (Bednobs and Broomsticks), Mary Poppins, Septimus Pretorius (Bride of Frankenstein), Councilor Troi (ST: tNG), Winifred Sanderson (Hocus Pocus), Prince Voltron (Flash Gordon), Sir Dragonet King Arthur's jester (Iddyls of the King/le Morte d'arthur), and the Reverend Doctor Syn (The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh).
Here's a fun one: Candace Flynn, from Phineas and Ferb. Okay, actually just any character from Phineas and Ferb, but Candace is the most ostensibly 'normal' out of the main cast, and she's still got some wacky accomplishments under her belt. Like being able to play twenty instruments. Or wrestling an alligator. Or becoming the queen of Mars. Or just surviving the crazy shenanigans she gets into.
I would argue that oath of conquest is just better and suits mordred even more, plus you get the best of 2 worlds when the paladin reaches max level 20
Good to see you take another swing at fate! Now I really wanna see an Archer build. But because you said "just say their name", and I dont wanna spoil people, ima tab a few lines down Archer Emiya, from Stay Night
If you don't angrily scream your lungs off using this build, *especially* if your DM lets you use a homebrew Clarent Blood Arthur, then you're not playing this build correctly.
Awesome build. I got one that I’m trying maybe you can help. I want to build Etrigan, the demon from dc. Trying to figure it out maybe a thought for you to try.
So will we ever see a Mordred build from the original Arthurian legends or is this going to fulfill the role of both Fate and Legend? Asking out of curiosity. However if you do end up making a more Arthurian legend Mordred build, I'd say maybe Paladin/Warlock build or a Paladin/Sorcerer build. That being said though, I could also potential for Bard or Cleric in the mix . . . maybe Druid. Definitely a Spelltank build as I like to call it.
Okay my guess without knowing anything about this series I’m thinking some kind of Fighter/sorcerer build? Maybe bard. I just know a high con and a probably maybe a couple monk levels for extra speed but idk 🤷🏾
I just came up with a somewhat controversial character I'd like to see you do for this series: the cousin of the infamous Mexican hero Speedy, Slowpoke Rodriguez.
I made a build similar to this, but my guy is an Aasimar, L4 Path of the Zealot Barbarian - L4 Champion Fighter - L5 Oath of Vengeance Paladin, who absolutely hates using his magic for spellcasting, primarily because he's not very good at it. He mostly only uses his spell slots for Divine Smite. Could you do a build for Toriko (from Toriko) or Flex Mentallo (from Doom Patrol)? Is there even a way to use Strength as your spellcasting ability in D&D?
Actually, rather then undead, if it was my table, I’d rule Servants as “Constructs”, given that they’re actual self is a pseudo deity in a dimension beyond time and space, and this is just a projection of them made through magic. … fate lore is a heck of a drug.
I see Mordred as a Fighter/Barbarian. Paladins either get their powers from oaths or gods. Mordred is a known oathbreaker and doesn't fight like a knight. Her style is the basic swordmanship+her instinct+battle expirence+cheap tactics.
Paladin+berserker is great for Mordred. Glory is perfect, but I wasn't expecting Zealot. I suppose she was pretty gung-ho to slay for her father, until she tried trying to slay her father. Yeah. I liked all the Leory Jenkins tyle jokes.
For anyone interested in an actual Holy Grail war in D&D I would highly Recommend Nat 19 Trial of heroes Handbook. If you just wanna watch Fate/Solar Shadow on RU-vid is amazing!
Additional info; if you like SAO Abridge, Bleach Abridged, or appropriately Fate/UBW Abridged(and why Rin Tosaka's catchphrase is "100% MAXIMUM NO CHILL!!!") it's those people playing and it is just as bat shit insane as it sounds
Wholly seconded on anything Nat 19. Solar Shadow is a fantastic campaign; its precursor campaign Idelian Void is a little rough at first as they try to find their footing, but Moon Festival is just amazing.
