This old home still has a few of its original single pane windows, and a couple of them are in need of replacement. This is a walk through on how I remove, replace, and re-glaze the panes.

A small tip that always worked for me: Have a damp cloth and wipe the putty knife with it and then you won't get as much drag causing the glaze to pull where you have to go back and clean it up over and over again. Great job love your videos.

Nice job on the window glazing. Nothing more satisfying than seeing the final results. Those windows didn't need to be energy efficient, in the summer you installed the screens and the winter you installed the storm windows.

I used to be a glazier, the putty was too hard needed some oil to soften it up. then roll it on the frame window then put in the glass and fix with 4 short pins then nead the putty round with your thumb and square off with the putty knife at 45 degree angle. must of done this a million times.

I have done restoration work on many old Victorian home with single pane widows. For a lasting job and to prevent the glazing from cracking, Prime the bare wood in the frame. You can use an artist brush and just paint the inside of the frame, that way the glaze will cover the primer. Also roll your glaze into a long snake and place in the frame,

I redid the glazing in my son's room before he was born. Redid all the finishes in his room. Stripped both windows and re-glazed, ugh. Re-did the trim, and repainted them and the entire room. I remember stripping the windows on the back patio in a plastic tent I created with two halogen worklights providing light and warmth! It was February in the metro dc area and in the low 30's . Froze my butt off and the stripper took 3 or 4 hours to work. It turned out great and looked awesome....but that was about 36-40 hours of work!! Great video!

Glazing is one of those skills that is easy to learn and hard to master. I think the key is having a putty knife with just the right amount of stiffness. So in the past I've chopped off and ground down to a shorter length until it's just the right stiffness. But then it still takes a lot of work to be able get the glazing compound perfectly smooth. It also helps if your glazing compound is not all dried out. Sometimes you have to add some linseed oil if it's too stiff.

Glazing a window is a very tough job to do well. And expensive to have it done by a pro. Those windows need to have all that old paint torched off . Cheaper in the end to put in a vinyl window. And more energy efficient .You've done a pretty good job .

First of all, thank you for using real glazing compound. I keep seeing videos where people use the spray can glazing. The problem with this stuff is that it shrinks so much that a fine looking job will look horrible in six months. My experience for what its worth is the best way to make this (or pretty much any other home repair job) job easier is to never use DAP products. The UGL glazing product is a bit more expensive, but requires less kneading and draws better with the putty knife, particularly at lower temperatures. The tearing along the cut line that you experienced on the first window almost never happens with UGL. It is just easier to work with. The bad news is that UGL pretty much requires you prime the window first before applying. For what its worth, DAP 33 glazing putty is basically Chalk and Linseed Oil. UGL glazing putty is basically Gilsonite and Chalk. I am not aware of any product that DAP makes for which there is not a superior product on the market, usually on the shelf right next to it. They are just the common bottom of the barrel product in so may categories. The old adage goes "DAP is Crap". Another comment is that the larger points that you are using stick out so far that they can make it harder to cut the glazing. As nice and easy as they are to use, I find the glazing goes easier with the tiny diamond shaped glazing points.
@samanthaweber6932
@samanthaweber6932 4 месяца назад
Appreciate the pointers! I do find that those glazing points being so large interfere with the sizing on sharp glazing applications. I can’t say that I’ve ever seen the small diamond points in the store though
@wildscotsman1
@wildscotsman1 6 месяцев назад
Great job Sam, it looks just fine. Just a tip like others have mentioned, I always kept some Linseed Oil for oiling my putty knife, that allows for a smooth run on your putty/glazing compound. After 60 years of repairing windows it's good to see someone keeping the skills alive. p.s. my last house was an old Coastguard House on top of a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and had 115 panes of glass on windows just like you repaired. 😒🤨🥰

You can cut A piece of plastic like butter blow lid.,or A cake frosting container down to A small putty wedge tool that can slide down those sides of the window frame to. Just use A pair scissors to cut out some of those tools with on the super cheap. They're reusable and cleanable afterwards to.

Curious what the benefit of using window glazing putty over caulk is?
@galdessa1
@galdessa1 6 месяцев назад
Window putty has been in use for hundreds of years. Acrylic latex and silicone caulk has been in use for about 50 years. Window glazing putty is made from high calcite lime and linseed oil. When properly applied, cured and maintained, it can last hundreds of years. By contrast, acrylic latex and silicone caulk generally lasts only about 10 years.

I had an old horizontal swing window, single pane of course, but with fairly thick wood laying around. Asked a window maker if he can make a douple pane to my specs, with only 3mm glass and an 8-12mm gap usually used for triple pane (don´t know the actual gap, it´s been a while). It´s a fairly small window, so pane strength isn´t too much of an issue. He sure could, so I deepened the recess in the wood and glued the glass into the fully painted frame with silicone caulk (stick to glossy paint very well). That was a good 25years ago, window´s still holding up, outside may need a lick of paint though. So if a wood frame is thick enough to mount it, a redo with a double pane of minimum thickness may be good solution for keeping old, classic windows.
