How to SAVE YOUR MIND: learn what no one teaches you

Because of the way human beings develop, people only truly gain the capacity for critical, independent thought when they're 25 years-old. Unfortunately, by the time people reach this age, their minds are so full of nonsense that they could literally spend the rest of their lives sifting through the concepts, beliefs, and ideas that were functionally put there without their consent. And -- if you want to be an actual individual -- this is precisely what you have to do. In this episode, I'll discuss what this process looks like and why it is indispensable to becoming yourself.

In order to control my mind I first needed to control my body ... Practicing the discipline of fasting was of great help to me in controlling my mind. Get to work, start today. Thank you Professa

So damn TRUE. The BIGGEST clue you're ACTUALLY changing is the ppl AROUND you. If you STILL have the SAME friends you did 10 years ago, chances are you haven't changed as much as you think you have. When we're changing MOST of our friends either fall away OR change with us (it happens), but USUALLY most move on or simply don't understand. If you have a NEW batch of like-minded ppl SURROUNDING you then your change is REAL. Jus' Sayin' ⚡️😎⚡️

What I find interesting is this: When you work on yourself and grow, you become happier, more balanced and more successful, because you stop self-sabotaging yourself. At the same time, it get’s more difficult to find a partner, as most people don’t develop and you can’t be anymore with someone who hasn’t integrated and healed his/her shadows and traumas. Love it. Started this process in my mid 40s without knowing it and regret not doing it earlier. Stopped watching news 10 years ago. Stopped reading eclectic alternative news a few years ago. Almost all of it is a distraction and BS, not because of some conspiracy, but because of people write it, or know better than you, or are mediocre at their jobs and under a deadline, or increasingly, because it’s just software writing the words. Spend your time on your family and friends, on your career, your hobbies, staying fit and healthy, learning new skills and improving old ones, building a nest egg, learning from folks like this and others to better understand yourself. Your decisions will almost entirely determine the life you lead.

True, anyone who encourages independent thought is a plus. This can take awhile to do though and even when you think your still not brain washed you still may be on some level b/c certain programming can run deep no matter who or what you are. You may have unconscious negative ancestral imprints or past life issues and themes that still play out as well. You may become conscious of these patterns so you can change or heal them if you don't believe in those things on a conscious level at least but to heal and be aware on deeper levels you may need the help of someone else. Good healers, Shamans, etc., can help you track certain things and why it happened. Alberto from the four winds website has some good info my mentor learned from him/the program. I'm sure there are other people or avenues you can learn from too. Interesting stuff.

Exactly. I'm 40 years old and live in the center of beautiful Heidelberg Germany. I inhabit a flat with 2 students, to save money. I can walk to work (ICU nurse), but I have an old used bike for less then 200 bucks. I don't need to travel. Heidelberg is paradise. No car, no kids. I only work part time so I have enough money for my hobbies: Bouldering, Running, Gaming on Sony PlayStation and Nintendo Switch (if our house burns down, I can't lose those games, I own them in the cloud). Life is beautiful nowadays, why would I waste it at work. I only buy cloths when I really need them, mostly cheap. You can eat healthy for 5 bucks a day (coffee included). It's easy: stick to things that have only 1 ingredient, but no isolates like sugars and oils (you can throw them together obviously for a meal) I consider whole grain pasta to be healthy, but you should have them split up in to maximum 2 meals a day. Other than that I eat oats, nuts and vegetables. Only drink water, coffee, and tea without additives. If you're vegan have your vit.B12 and a good source of omega-3 fatty acids (chia seeds, walnuts), maybe vit.D if you're a nightshift worker or not out in the sun much, and you're good. Once in a while if you have an easier day try to eat nothing for that day. I'm 40 years old, athletic, everyone thinks I'm much younger. Take good care of your bodies folks 💟🌌☮️

Divesting yourself of these moutains of rolled up newspaper and tumbleweeds is a true life change. What you've described is the result but how you get there is a lot of pulling yourself back consistently into awareness. I began painting in oils when I was in my 30's. Previously, I had learned to write my dream content, every night, and decipher the symbolic content of the dream's language. So, I then used the conscious act of painting as a means of examining the visual symbolism of the images that I painted, in much the same way as you suggest; listening to each thought that might come into my awareness. The intent of the exercise, unlike the Surrealists, isn't to capture the nonconscious image of dreams, but to examine the contents of my mind. Now, to anchor my mind I needed something to hold within it, and that was often "Love", or "Peace". This was a counter to compare/contrast any thought that came that was NOT that anchor. SO, any thought/emotion that came, I could decide if I wanted to keep it, as you say. And often, what I was left holding, were thoughts of peace and love...and a painting. 🙂

This will surely become a frequent go-to clip. Far more efficient than explaining large bits of these concepts from scratch. Ask yourself, “what do I think I know; and, how do I think I know it…?” until it's second nature and a permanent background part of your inner monologue.

A very necessary insight as always. In my experience, the best approach to take in response to realizing one has been molded by one's culture is to pursue truth rather than adopt a counter-cultural stance for its own sake. You can end up just as confused by reactively fighting external influence as you can mindlessly conforming to it. Better to evaluate information and ideas on their own terms regardless of the source. So if you end up retaining views originally received from parents, media, church, friends, etc. that's completely fine, so long as you have individually evaluated each idea and weighed its truth/usefulness for yourself.

Re. watching the news, one of the best things I ever did for my state of mind (back in the early 2000s) was to stop watching TV when I was home alone. Daytime talk shows were the big poison then, and they thrived off making their viewers miserable and anxious in the guise of offering helpful advice, "reality" entertainment, and lifestyle products you absolutely had to have. Today's social media is the same, only orders of magnitude moreso.

Shut off all input to your brain, and OUTPUT to other people. The output to other people part is important caz we often verify these thought loops by speaking them outward. that was just my journey, there is probably other ways to accomplish this ... ur mileage may vary lol

One of my favorite’s so far! 8:36 Bingo 🎯 … Hit the nail on the head with this episode. Critical thinking is a skill and to some a gift. Truth is the basis of “comparison” when analyzing anything. Comparison is the key to accuracy. If we don’t shine the light we roam in the dark. Being able to zoom in and out of any given situation will allow us to see the details and the bigger picture at the same time. If we can be the satellite and the microscope we gain truths perspective. The best way to gain truths perspective is with balanced ⚖️ thinking ⚖️ and an unbiased emotional detachment. Think until you’ve gotten through the maze… The only way to attain true immediate knowledge is to “perspective shift” and to protect and guard your subconscious mind from past and “present” influences. The only way to protect your subconscious mind is to have a firewall like antivirus program running in the background… almost like a fight or flight alarm system that detects and blocks threats. (I don’t have those apps downloaded either. Pretty Smart…I use to tho mainly for business. I’ll get on sometimes to let people know I’m still alive just in case they wondering.)

I wholeheartedly agree with what you said. About that bs shit... I was told that black people (I'm Afro-Cuban, btw...) are "supposed" to think and live and dress and act a certain way. Me? I saw the consequences of some of those thoughts and actions and beliefs. Like having kids without a husband and a stable lifestyle. Like going to jail. Like never having a good paying job. Like tolerating crime. I said a big no to all of that bs and left it behind decades ago. Similar thing with going to church. It left me afraid to date, look too hard at men, be too attractive too men and not wanting to live an abundant life with a fair amount of material possessions. It took me until around age 45 to get my head straightened out enough to think freely enough to really start doing my own thing. Hard work! It's the hardest! Staying the same is comfy. Change is hard! Dealing with criticism (self and other's) is hard and sometimes came with negative consequences of their own. Worth it? Absolutely. Clean out that warehouse of bs thoughts people. Have armed guards to only let in the good stuff. Your mind will love your for it.

Another thought-provoking take! Two years spent in a third world village with no media diet never left me feeling at all deprived afterwards. A couple possible additions come to mind: 1) This is not compulsory. No need to complete the process perfectly to receive benefit. And while hardship should be expected, if taken to the point of trauma (e.g. via extreme self-isolation, abandoning all social connections suddenly) you're body will lash back and inflict you with a deeper attachment. Just start being willing to question everthing. And even eventually start (like Orion) helping others do the same. 2) Let go of, avoid and don't apply labels. (I'm surprised Orion never used the word "identity." The more "civilized" humans get, the more "stuff" we identify with as a kind of shield against our self-inflicted species isolation.) This car, that person, those systems of belief. An even better place to start than #1 above, is with (your) kids. (And I can't blame someone without kids for neglecting this point.) Yes, they have to work their own awakening once grown. But we can help them to, for example, embrace history study (incl family hx) without attaching themselves to any labels (whether labels associated with shame or pride). Model questioning more than answers. In short, you might not need to take full responsibility yourself for throwing out the bathwater (and whatever's in there...). As social and cultural beings, it might be more natural to not attempt this all alone nor even all in our own generation.

But we each drink from different wells. My wife thinks I fill my head with crap, like your channel, Jordan Peterson, Rattlesnake Jake, Joe Rogan, Candace Owens, and others too numerous to mention. I think she fills her head with crap: feelings based therapy, inspirational women's adventure stories, married at first sight etc. Obviously my stuff is "good oil" and hers is utter rubbish. I think maybe here we have a significant reason why people are so divided about "truth" and "misinformation" nowadays.

I have become adept at taking something that isn't functional in one situation and applying it in an unexpected way in a different circumstance so that what at first didn't appear useful was actually useful all along. 300 level coursework in one field is often applicable in understanding another "completely different" field. At very high levels, the stem fields begin to overlap. If you don't understand geometry, you can never fully understand algebra. At first geometry was leading me in circles, but eventually it squared me up. That same analogy is true with chemistry, but the puns wouldn't work and most people wouldn't understand the vocabulary.

Orion this is one of your best videos yet, and somewhat unprecedented. This video resonates very deeply with me, I’ve always had a skepticism towards pretty much everything, including my own thoughts. In my humble opinion, the only freedom we really have is to decide how we interact with our own thoughts. Everything else, even our ongoing thoughts themselves, are in large part outside of our control as they are a consequence of the continuous stream of events and inputs we recognise as existence. True consciousness, perhaps even transcendence is arguably impossible, but one can achieve a very deep and broad understanding of the universe by understanding that everything can and must be questioned, and we must decide for everything for ourselves. Nothing is true beyond our own decision to accept an idea as reality. We live in a realm of ideas, and nothing more.

Great episode :) Oscar Wilde is credited as saying: Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation. This often comes to mind as I listen to contributors on talk-radio repeating things they've heard. Ideas and opinions absorbed and assimilated and re-presented as 'their own thoughts’. It’s quite striking when you recognise the exact same idea, sometimes even the exact same wording of the same idea re-expressed as though an original notion. I don't say this in criticism as though people are simply ‘sheeple’, it's very easily done, …to be under the influence of other trusted voices, and maybe even impossible to avoid to some degree until you have time to step back a bit and ask yourself "Is this really something that I think myself and have evidence for... or am I simply accepting someone else's word for it?!”

I'm a sixty seven year old male. I've always considered myself extremely fortunate to have been born gay, for this precise reason. When my friends and I hit puberty and all of my friends continued on the socially acceptable path (for that time) of heterosexuality, I was left to figure things out on my own. Suddenly everything I had been told was suspect. I soon realized that if I acted a certain way, I could fit in. From my perspective at that young age, it seemed clear that everyone was acting in order to fit in. I could see that my family had an agreed upon collection of family mythology that shaped our beliefs and how we saw ourselves. Stories of heroism, betrayal and fortitude by past family members that were intended to shape us. All of them had a kernel of truth but were largely exaggerated. I could see that my friends had similar stories. All of which I had accepted without question up until the moment I discovered I was different and no such family or societal mythology existed for me. It was like a light had been switched on! From that point forward my perspective was very different. Not flawless, but definitely a lot more discerning than before. I'm not implying that this is the reality for all gay men. I was fortunate in that my family did not impose any homophobic beliefs on me when I was young. My parents didn't force any religious beliefs on us. My parents weren't atheists, they just wanted us to make our own decisions regarding religion. As I said, I consider myself fortunate. These days I do watch some news and participate in some social media and do my best to remain objective.
