I have the 40am MaxiCharger. One feature that was missed for this review is this unit (and I think all MaxiChargers) have a physical network port for hard-wired Ethernet connectivity to your network. I've hardwired my MaxiCharger so the network connectivity is rock solid. This is a feature very few units have.

A good review. I had bought the 40A Maxicharger back in January 2023 only to find your first review after my purchase. I am in Michigan and that entire winter I was fighting with that original cable. At the beginning of this winter season, I was hoping the cable would "break in". It did not. I had to do a bit of back and forth with the online chat rep (via the app) and finally, they sent me a replacement cable. I do agree that it is better but still remains loosely coiled when cold. For me, I have my charger inside the garage but charge outside. The cable does not lay flat and the raised coils are a trip hazard (and this risks damage to the car's charge port due to the potential for ripping the J1772 connector from the port). I think one of the additions to your freeze test should be to try to lay the cable flat to identify whether there would be a walking hazard. Otherwise, I do agree with your scoring. This still is a great EVSE and Autel is always active in updating the app features.

I have the same issue with the cable on my 40A MaxiCharger, and I live in a much warmer climate. I have a Tesla Mobile Charger as well, and tend to use it more often as the cable on it is very easy to uncoil and coil back up when done. Plus, I don't have to mess with the J1772 to NACS adapter.

As always a fantastic review. I bought one anyways because of the charging data in the app, plus i was looking for a charger with ethernet. The Lite does not come with ethernet. I returned the first thinking it was just a factory defect, but the second was the same. So that's a differentiator for those considering the Lite. I can also confirm that cable is very stiff even in my garage. We have a chargepoint outside at work and even at -10c the cable is like rope.

Great review, as always! I'm glad that you are differentiating those chargers that have hardware limits for the max current allowed. As you say in this video, apps sometimes glitch and settings get changed for whatever reason. The right place for setting the max current is when it's being installed, and the app can/should then allow it to be reduced as desired.

Always enjoy your reviews and comments. I know we have given up on getting everyone to adopt the label "EVSEs" and give in and just call them "Chargers". Over the Christmas break, I thought a good possibility that might make everyone happy. If we called them "Charging Stations" we could satisfy new EV adopters as well as the Purist. We can install a "Charging Station" at our homes, and also stop at the "Charging Stations" as we road trip. What do you think? Can we get to EV PEACE? It is the season. Thanks or all you do Tom.

I have this unit (in silver) installed in my garage in Colorado capped at 40amps on a 50amp circuit. The cable really hasn't been a problem for me, but to be fair, my garage doesn't really get down to those temperatures. I also keep the cable coiled on the unit and back my EV6 in, so it is maybe a 2.5ft reach from the unit to my car. It has been rock-solid for me. The app has also been surprisingly good. With the sales that regularly happen on Amazon, it is definitely a unit I would recommend if you do not want to purchase Tesla products.

Great review as usual, Tom. I fail to understand how these charger companies just don’t get it with the cables. I could be wrong but it doesn’t seem like rocket science. Can flexible rubber in cold be that rare or that much mire expensive? Garden hoses are made of it. I have one.

I’ve had this unit for a year now and can confirm that when it’s over 100 degrees Fahrenheit outside with the sun on the handle, it derates doen to 3.6kW to try to keep itself cool. I found this out when friends come visit and we run the cable to the outside of the garage. Edit: I do want to add that I use this for a 23 ID4 Pro S AWD and it will constantly provide 11-11.5kW to the car

I love my 2023 ID.4. And I agree that the new charging plan will definitely ease abuse because I rarely use the DC fast charging system on Electrify America but whenever I do, it’s always a mess and there’s always a line of Fords and Volkswagens. Great video keep up the good work.

Shame the cable stiffed us again. Maybe they can offer a J1772 and J3400 in the existing cabinet design by using the direct wire input on the back side. If they pull off two great cable choices it’d be at least a distinguishing factor being able use 50A on either or directly load share two simultaneous used plugs. 💡#nicereview 44:50

Another thing that would be good for buyers to know is if the manufacturer will provide some path to convert from J1772 to J3400 if they get a new car.

Tbh there should only ever be a hard switch for limiting the input current. I’m a software engineer, things can get problematic on an update and the unit software resetting to its default amperage when it’s only on a 30 amp circuit is extremely problematic. This is why IMO setting the current should never be via software, only via a hard switches.

Yes. Although in theory you could put something like that in the firmware area of a device so that it’s less likely to change with routine software.

Tesla Wallchargers amperage can be adjusted through the car or the app. No problem.

The current limit in my charger can change hundreds of times a day as it is controlled to charge my car using excess solar power. A charger with only hardware switches to limit current would be worthless for what I need in an EVSE.

@edsellers6602 your wire gauge changes with solar powe? Now that's a tech i haven't seen before! Breakers are set so you don't burn your wires. Max amperage should be set on the EVSE so you never trip the breaker through normal use. Any other type of power control can be software, but hard limits should be hardware.

It is great that you test the cables for cold weather. How do the cables preform under extremely high temperatures under full load. I sure would not want a cable that melts when really hot. I see you tested the charger that comes with the Mach-e and gave it a fare rating. My experience with the unit has been poor at best. Ford replace one but is balking at replacing the second one that is even worse than the first. Even in relatively cool temperatures it alarms as over heating and cuts the charge rate way back. At least it keeps charging to some extent, but some times as slow as 1kWh. I love your videos but would like to see some long term reliability testing.

If I decided Level 1 charging wasn't good enough for my Bolt, I'd probably go with the 40A version of this charger. But could you please specific in your reviews and ratings which smart-home integrations it supports? For example, I use Google Assistant, not Alexa, so it seems this unit wouldn't integrate for me? Maybe give the units 1 point for Alexa and one point for Google Assistant? Thank you!

You missed that they offer sharing and billing which almost no one has. Also autostart is an option in the app. I don't mind the cable. Id actually like less lights so it doesnt actract thieves if outside. I might employ some electrical tape.

Hello Tom! The Clipper Creek 14-30 (charged at 24a) EVSE at my mother in laws died. I reached out to Enphase but they were not phased by my email. Any suggestions for a 14-30 setup that charges at 24a? Could I put a 14-30 on an emporia unit and set the app to charge at 24a? Thanks!!

Arounrd 20:30 during the freeze cable test, a good and repeatable measure would be to measure about 12 feet from the J1772 connector prior to freezing it, and pull it out of freezer, and simply lift it up and see if the connector comes up from the ground, indicating poor freeze performance.

Autel support are telling me that this unit does not offer power sharing, and that they only support that on their DC units. I’ve seen Tom mention it a couple of times though. Does this feature actually exist and can anybody point me to more information?

Agreed with all review items though I think the cold weather cable should have been average nor poor. It seemed ok, agree it crackled, but name a review with an average score cable so I can see what you are looking for.

That was a borderline call - but I may have been a bit harsh because I was surprised that it wasn't better. Autel knew they had a problem with the cable and specifically sourced one that would perform better in the cold weather. So I'm disappointed they didn't get one that performed better. It's a big miss, IMO.

I have had this Autel maxi 50amp for 10 months to charge my lightning and R1S. It works great. Can you tell me where I can find out about how to connect to solar? I can’t find anything online about this. I have a 20w solar system and it would be cool if it can talk. Thanks for reviewing all the different chargers.

@@Avionics_test_pilot Also, there is a chat feature within the Autel app. It is not in real-time but more like some delayed texting. When I pushed to get my cable replaced with the newer version I clearly had a rep that was not authorized to provide me the new cable under warranty. But, I persisted, asked for the chat to be escalated to a supervisor, and suddenly was receiving the new replacement cable. If you haven't tried the app it may be worthwhile.

I have the emporia charger and solar system in the app you can have the charger use solar only. In my other house i have no solar, but an Autel charger, so I can't tell, but assume it should configurable to your goal.

Could you comment on benefits/disadvantages for a homeowner of an EVSE being OCPP compliant. My electric utility offers a $750 rebate towards purchase and installation of an EVSE. that is OCPP compliant, but does not prohibit installation of a charger without it such as the Emporia. What am I opening myself up to with an OCPP compliant charger.?

You're not opening up to anything you don't consent to. Some utilities will offer a program to monitor your charging habits, others will give you a discount if you allow them to lower the charging rate (or even temporarily stop the charging) during peak demand hours. But in every case, you always have to give them permission to do so.

I always use all three of my EVs (Bolt, R1S and Lightning) but I don't show all the footage because the videos are already too long! These reviews take me 2-3 weeks and there is a LOT you don't see.

Does the unit have an RJ-45 connector? The elite does. I ran shielded ethernet to my charger. Wifi can be unreliable. If the access point is a huge distance away from the ap, like on a pedestal away from the building, or if there is large metal objects, like appliances, to create signal shadows, ethernet is a better choice. I don't use wifi or bluetooth to manage my charger. If the lite does not have an ethernet jack then I would still recommend the elite over it.

With these issues of melting, seems like the code isnt specific enough.... Kinda think in todays tech, you would be more specific. Tesla does not specify to use a industrial outlet for a travel charger. And codes are so iffy depending on who you are. I commute 160 miles round trip on my EV up to 4 times a week. I'm not convinced to run 48 amp wall charger because my travel charger does fine... And a tip to lower the amperage is quite useful if you don't want to run that amount of energy all at once. I know there is a calculation to minimize your amperage to your breaker system.

I asked for one to review, but Dewalt wasn't interested in sending me one to review. I'll buy one eventually to review, but I already have a few in the garage that companies sent me to review so I will probably be a few months before I get a Dewalt.

Tom- what is your suggestion for a charger which will live outside - we do not have a carport or garage.

Not Tom, of course, but I've watched and rewatched a bunch of his videos as I decide which one to buy, and what I have come to understand is that as long as they are NEMA 3 rated that they should be fine outdoors. NEMA 4 is better, and that's probably what I would choose if I had to mount them outdoors. All the videos have cold weather tests and the newer videos have hot weather tests. He has a video showcasing what he believes are the best 5 chargers of 2023 that does a great comparison. It's almost a year old, though, so some new chargers have hit the market. I think that currently the top four are this one (the Autel Maxicharger Lite with new cable), the ChargePoint HomeFlex (it's only $550 on Amazon right now but was $750 when he reviewed it, I think), the Emporia, and the EVIQO. There are certainly other good chargers like the Grizzl-E Smart, the JuiceBox, etc., but I don't think they scored as high overall. If you're really concerned about the adequacy of outdoor installation, I think the Grizzl-E is the toughest built. The non-smart version is pretty inexpensive as well, if I remember correctly. I'm probably going to go with the Autel, personally. Good luck!

Tom. I own Qty 2. 2023 VW ID-4 Pro S RWD and a 2022 Audi E Tron. So I am having an Electrician now install a Unit from my Condo 3 floor to my Parking Space in the parking lot on a Pole. What Autel do you recommend

How does this only have a 3 year warranty. It’s literally an AC pass through. Are they not confident in their PCB designs?

Very few chargers offer a warranty longer than 3 years.

There is a big relay and a small circuit board. My 5 year old Grizzl-E is having a problem with the relay sticking open. A hard smack fixes it, lol.

At 38:43 shouldn’t it get 3 points since it’s greater than 48 amps? I get it’s only 2 amps more, but the way the scale is written it should get 3.

So I should clarify the text on the ChargerRater. It should say greater than 50-amps. The 3 points are for 80-amp units. There's no real tangible difference in a 48-amp or a 50-amp unit

That's a hypothetical that isn't in existence. The units go from 48/50-amp to 80-amp, there's nothing offered in between and there aren't any EVs that can accept anything between 48-amps and 80-amps

only thing i found is nothing is more stupid than needing an app to make your charger work. especially one you have to give internet access to or it doesn't work. i like the manual setting ability in this. but does it work without internet access or app? in your off test, does this come back to the charge you set from the app?

Nice review as usual but I don't see why anyone (in North America) would buy this over the Tesla charger. There's no cost savings and it's not NACS. Virtually all EVs (in North America) will be NACS only within a year and most already are. Also the Tesla Universal Wall Connector has both J1772 and NACS connectors and natively supports bidirectional charging (which is currently available on the Cybertruck and is a feature that Tesla has indicated will be on many (if not all) future models). Guess I don't see the point.

Tesla, i paid: 595, Got the Autel twice for under 249, they go on sale often on amazon. plus, tesla does not have a rfid card, as for the bidirectional, charging, I am sure it will be a while and very few people will use it and the extra expenses. I have the ford lightning heavy duty charge installed and the bidirectional extra is 3k, so i did not bother.

My EV has the J1772. I'm the guy who buys new and runs it until things really start to fail. My last vehicle is 15 years old and was passed to my son this past fall and honestly, it will likely see him through college just fine (if it's not crashed). Prior to that I had a 1994 vehicle that I only got rid of due to body rust starting. While I'll need a fast charger on those rare longer trips, my everyday charge is J1772. So why should I install NACS? I leave my home full every day (well, 80%) and I never visit a gas station. I can't believe just how much that chore bothers me now with my wife's car. I've just been holding off getting a permanent solution until Tom got this review out. NEMA 4 enclosure is an absolute in my book due to the wind and snow drift patterns at my home. I've been running the 'stock' charger out under the garage door, but that sucks. It would be nice to be able to mount the EVSE base inside and then only have the cable run outside, but that is against code.

@@christophersiano969 IF you don't have a charger yet, why wouldn't you install one that includes both J1772 and NACS? We now know that virtually every new vehicle in North America will only have a NACS port within a year. Futureproof. If you already have a charger it may not be worthwhile to change. BTW, a NEMA 4 enclosure to hold a charger is inexpensive. That said, buy whatever works best for you.

I'm not sure that's correct. I asked Autel to explain the difference and they said there used to be a difference but now there's no difference. I've never seen one that lit up. Are you sure you're not talking about the commercial unit?
