People often disregard how rules keep a grappler safe when shooting on a soft canvas mat against a single opponent. An elbow to the base of the skull, eye gouges, or a small blade to the neck will not get the other guy disqualified on the sidewalk. Think about it.

Great explanation. The bladed stance is often imitated, but rarely duplicated properly.

The other day I was thinking the same thing: "what’s the difference when narrowing the stance?" It’s basically the same distance.

Every stance has its pros and cons. The bladed stance you've shown is no exception. It's bad when there's no room to shuffle backwards, also it's more susceptible to low kicks and it's harder to move sideways with this stance or do roundhouse kicks with the rear leg and power punches with the rear hand. But it's good for long range fighting and shooting in and out quickly like in fencing. A squared stance is better in close quarter combat, which you kind of did mention. Good stuff tho, I liked the video. Take care

If there is no room going backwards, than you go to the side, which is done with sidesteps and / or shuffle sidesteps. This is not shown in this video.

Made sense, what he said. I'm no expert, the bladed stance is ancient. A Roman soldier would have used the same stance. Right side sword hand forward. Shield side back to meet a charging enemy. If the soldier stood square then he could be pushed back and off balance. I'm no expert but it does make sense. Also I'd rather move my feet than block with my arms if I have an option.

The more bladed your stance is, the more mobile and untouchable you become. Michael Venom Page is a great example.
@sophiawoods6748
@sophiawoods6748 6 месяцев назад
True but you also susceptible to leg kicks and no amount of distance management can guarantee not get your leg smashed. Unless you have certain targets to end a fight? Maybe the groin?
@Zen-jc2ov
@Zen-jc2ov 6 месяцев назад
@@sophiawoods6748 Sure, JKD tactics deal with that. Intercept & attack the attack (even better - its intention) as quickly as you can. There may be no room for a distance control in a non-ring environment.

Common MMA stance is a bit more like JKD stance than it is muay thai, but it is still more squared than JKD which is open to groin kicks. But in some degree, MMA stance might be more optimal than JKD stance in MMA setting/ruleset (with groin kicks being banned) (since obv MMA stance was designed to be optimal in MMA ruleset), but in street fighting an MMA stance is much more open to groin kicks than a JKD stance. For a super tall and squared stance like in Muay Thai, not only it is susceptible to groin kicks in a street fight, but in an MMA setting/ruleset, it is also susceptible for a double-leg-takedown because not only it lacks mobility but an opponent can easily wrap his arms around both legs, which why most MMA practitioners completely abandoned that stance. On the other hand, other bladed stances from Karate, Taekwondo, and even from modern boxing, may reduce the chance of getting groin kicked and getting double-leg-takedown compared to squared stances, but with the front leg extended, the front leg is much more to prone to be over extended, tearing the acl, from a single side kick to the thigh/kneecap. Note that these bladed stances was also designed to be optimal in a sport rule set. For example, Karate/Taekwondo stance is the most optimal for karate/taekwondo point-sparring rules set where the attackers feet is much closer to the target's upper body and both players don't have to worry getting kicked below. And for modern boxing stance, the boxer can just plant his foot in a wider stance to make his upper body and hands reach the target much easier without the fear of being kicked to the leg. In summary, any stance will always be adapted based on the combat ruleset/setting.

I find it interesting you chose to use a photo of Conor's bladed stance, considering he was taken down four times in his bout against Chad Mendes (who stepped in on short notice AND this was during Conor physical prime). All stances will have their advantages and drawbacks, but to not even acknowledge that it can be still susceptible to takedowns, while using a demo partner who doesn't know how to shoot a double just strikes me as odd. Not to mention summarizing defensive wrestling as "MMA guys can't move away". What does that even mean? You demonstrated getting out of range of your partners "takedown", but what if they bridge the gap and get hold of you while you're in a bladed stance?
@ThomasMarxJeetKuneDoIFO

I did watch the entire video and you demonstrated a bladed stance's advantages against someone who doesn't know a basic take down..as proof its very effective to defend against takedowns? I'd love to see more JKD pressure tested, but please get out of your comfort zone and test your theories against practitioners of other styles with relevant skill and experience. @@ThomasMarxJeetKuneDoIFO
