John Deere E100 First Oil Change and Secret Upgrade?!

Fix Farm Ride Build

Well, its now overdue for its first service (dump and fill) and I should actually grease it again one of these days too. Yes, I have a family member that works for Case IH. If Case still sold lawn tractors I would have bought one. That being said I really like the look of John Deere's. Can't beat green and yellow! Also I apologize for stooping to click-bait... but I definitely appreciate your view!
Every comment helps the channel, so I certainly appreciate the feedback good or bad. That being said, a fram oil filter isn't going to kill this lawnmower engine. Its essentially just a lawnmower that you can ride that has John Deere stickers on it. You will never get all the old engine oil out during an oil change unless you are completely flushing the entire system with new oil. When I was researching different ride on lawn mower models I called my local John Deere dealership and they didn't seem too overly thrilled that John Deere even offers these small mowers and they just recommended I go to a big box store and buy it there. That was pretty surprising for me, but it gave me the impression they didn't really care to have time for small lawn "tractors". This video is meant to be half instructional and the rest a big joke for entertainment. Of course I had to google the exact oil spec, and I would never finish the oil change without the correct oil level. I'm using the correct weight and type of oil, this mower has had 3 services since filming this video and its running just fine. There are many brands of oil and oil filters and John Deere is not the only option out there. Going slightly over the service interval is not recommended but its also not going to kill the engine if it happens once in a while. Modern oils don't break down as soon as they used to, and sometimes life gets real busy on a guy. Its easy to get polarized over a brand and loyalty to a brand, but just remember folks, its just a fancy lawnmower, and its just RU-vid, its just entertainment. I do try to read and respond to every comment I get. If you want to teach me something i'm all ears, just keep it positive :) A service on a tiny machine like this is simple, its not an aircraft and it doesn't need to be overcomplicated.

Well, that sounds like a great idea! Buying the cheapest oil and filter saves you 25$ a year and you can be sure that the cheap filter actually filters and the cheapest oil is lubricating exactly the way it should. A risk worth taking when a full John Deere OEM service kit cost 49$ and a full OEM Brigs kit cost 40$. Fine risk management young man!

Problem is that the spark plugs do not need to be changed every oil change and you're wasting money by buying a oil change kit. It costs less than $18 for a new filter and quality oil. Spark plugs last many years. I have not put new plugs in my D130 since I bought it 10 years ago. Starts right up and runs fine. My previous lawn tractor lasted 17 years with the original plugs. These newer ignition systems are much better than in the past.

Anyone feeling the need to express recreational outrage would’ve wasted the that 9:43 on something far less valuable. The Fram oil filter is much more affordable than the $15 John Deere filter. Also wondering if anyone has an opinion about Amazon kits for these mowers that comes with an oil filter, air filter, fuel filter & spark plugs. For the v-twin 22hp LA 135 it’s $16 on Amazon (obviously Chinese parts) vs $60-$70 for JD parts at Home Depot.

Suggestion: use a sharpie to record the date and hours on your oil filter. I am on my second JD mower. The first one was 15 years old when I bought it at a garage sale and I used it for 9 years where I left it with the house when I sold it. JD #2 is now a 19 year old unit that I bought as a end of summer season repo that had 40 hours on it. Plugs every other year and new air filter, oil filter, and oil every spring. I don't put enough hours on it in a years time for the recommended maintenance cycle. I have two sets of blades and change out the sharpened and balanced blades at the oil change and lube. Replace the belt with a JD brand belt or you will get to do it again soon if you use an aftermarket belt.
@Darren1767
@Darren1767 Год назад
Thanks for the tips there. I’ll definitely replace the belt with a jd belt like you said. I still have to sharpen or replace my blades. At my last property I was a little hard on this machine and I did some brush hogging with it so I wouldn’t be surprised if the blades are a little chipped up. I have just been ignoring the hour meter and changing the oil at the beginning of the season. It only takes me around half an hour to mow almost an acre of lawn so I don’t get a ton of hours. The summers here get very dry and you don’t have to mow for about 2 months sometimes.

Never change transmission oil either. But I think this lightweight easier riding always starting, safer for my kids piece of plastic crap will do for the next few years. Lol. @Darren1767
@Darren1767 Год назад
You can if you want to. It really doesn’t matter and just adds another step for you. All you are doing is lubricating the o ring. You shouldn’t be getting it soaked in oil. You will never get all the old engine oil out of any engine when you do an oil change. There will always be old oil left in the engine to a certain extent. People definitely have their opinions on using new oil only to lubricate the o ring but I have literally done thousands of oil changes and I can’t see how it makes a difference. Unless your oil is so heavily contaminated with metal flakes or fuel i can’t see it mattering at all.

Great video! We are all different in how we go about maintaining. I paid $2100 for my booger green tractor… I don’t mind spending an extra $3.20 on the designed filter. Nothing wrong with Fram but I trust JDs isn’t going to flake apart inside due to excessive heat. Also, every single filter on a new tractor is over tightened to stupid levels. I used a C clamp busting a hole it it to get the piece of shit off. JD has no good reason for that over tighten… I think they figure if one in a 100 give up and call the dealer, it’s basically an easy way to get some $100 an hour labor or some shit. Another thing I found is just buy the green plastic watering can at the dollar tree and use that as a pan… the height is perfect and the spout just by random chance rests snug on the port. Then after you empty the new oil, pour the oil in the water can in the empty jugs and throw them in the neighbors garbage. Another thing I do is stand on the side of the tractor when the oil is done flowing to get that last bit out. …. Then pour a little clean oil in to rinse down any metal fragments that are heavy at the bottom.
@Darren1767
@Darren1767 Год назад
Funny eh. I guess a hot oil flush would work well. Again though, mower is 3 years old now and it’s running fine. I don’t think I’ve ever noticed shavings in oil. Oil always comes out looking decent. There are a few filter brands I would never use but I worked on cars for a living for around 4 years and I changed a lot of oil when I was doing that. I think fram is fine. I used to use the factory brand filters on my vehicles, I used fram, napa etc. never noticed a difference. The only time I especially go for the factory brand now is on our Toyota hybrid. I’m not gonna cheap out on a $46,000 SUV.

@@Darren1767 I’m with you there. I went way too long to my first change… I think I’m at 70 hours…. The oil was really clean. It was still hard to see on the dip stick. I owned a crapsman before the JD and it’s been night and day. The JD is hands down built so much better. I’m a bit obsessive and clean the deck and everything real well after each cut ( being in FL, the grass will rot a deck so fast it’s crazy) . I just hit all the grease points and got new blades for the hell of it. I swapped the headlight bulbs out for multicolored LED for no good reason too ( grandson thinks it’s cool as hell… when on the green setting it looks fun). The only issue I’ve had was because I let the idiot neighbor use it. That s100 just isn’t made for long heavy grass. I heard him stalling it out but just cringed and let him finish his lawn. Next time I went to use it the belt snapped. I know he stretched that shit. Oh, and one of the deck pins and washer popped off and I was running it for a good 50 yards before I looked back and noticed the deck was digging into the ground on the right side. It looked like DJ Jazzy Jeff’s hair all slanted. I was surprised I didn’t hear it even notice right away the deck was dragging on one side.

I am a retired heavy equipment mechanic, and I want to point out a couple things. The first one is using that Fram oil filter. Those are the most cheaply made oil filters. I personally use JD filters. I also use Amsoil oil. I use it in all of my vehicles. Wix makes good filters. Do some research about oil filters. You will be amazed. I buy all of my parts from the JD dealer. After-market parts are questionable at times. The JD stuff is better in my opinion. For years I was a field mechanic for Caterpillar, and that is where I learned about the price that the equipment owner sometimes pays when they use cheap parts. The engine oil is the single most important part of preventive maintenance. My JD lawn tractor also came with that goofy "quick change" oil filter set up. I changed that out at the first oil change. Changing out that expensive oil filter, but leaving 2/3 of the engine oil in the engine is dumb by my opinion. I also did not like the drain pipe cap that came with the JD kit. It was not positive enough for me. I just used a piece of pipe and a pipe cap. If that little plastic cap jiggles off, the engine will be toast in a very short time.

@Darren1767
@Darren1767 7 месяцев назад
It really doesn’t matter. The dirty oil was just in your engine, the o ring stops the engine oil from leaking out, if there was any contamination it would be microscopic. Pretty much every car dealership or mechanic shop will do it the way I did it. You never get all the engine oil out of a motor unless you drop the pan and flush the entire motor.

FYI - you can add a piece of plastic tubing to the drain plug - I use a piece of 1/2 inch drip irrigation tubing to get the oil from the engine to your drain pan or gallon jug for recycling. Also a few paper towels wadded up under the fuel filter on the frame will keep things a bit cleaner. Placing the used filter into a gallon zip lock plastic bag is a great way to keep it all neat for the recycling. My grease gun wouldn't fit though; so that is a problem for another day.
@Darren1767
@Darren1767 Год назад
Ya that’s smart! I used to keep different size tubing in my tool box for hard to reach oil fill necks on motor homes or fancy cars where you can’t drop oil etc. works good for Bleeding brakes too. I am reeeeaaallly not wanting to take the deck off and sharpen the blades. I assume I Probly don’t need to take the deck off but either way I need to build some ramps for this thing or figure out where some decent lifting points are to jack it up. I just don’t like the “plastic” axles and I haven’t had the right amount of time to do that yet

With my lawn tractor I change the oil/filter once a year regardless of hours of use, and I use the OEM filter, but after the last filter I bought and seeing the Kohler engine oil is now $11 a quart, my lawn tractor will now be getting the standard off the shelf at the parts store oil that I put in my trucks LOL...I'll just add the additional bottle of ZDDP additive which is about the only difference between regular engine oil like Valvoline, Penzoil, etc. None of today's regular engine oils have ZDDP in them, which is needed to keep push rod engines from destroying the cam lobes.

I’ve never had to do that. Google is your friend though. I would remove the dust cap that’s on the end of the axle and there should probably be a nut to unscrew there.
