This is partly because foreign terrorists begin as rebel guerillas, fighting off occupying armies in developing nations. What makes them terrorists is their targeting civilians in public bombings, shooting up newspaper offices for political cartoons against religious figures, kidnappings, maiming and brainwashing of rich heirs, beheadings on RU-vid and hijacking airplanes. Most discussions of terrorism focus too much on the offenders' religions and ideologies, rather than the methods described in the previous sentence.

If you just act to what is written, you'll only ever play wooden, boring characters. Take the tongue thing that Ledger did; apparently he started that because the prosthetic was uncomfortable and Nolan liked it, so told him to do it on camera. Also, do you think that every mannerism, or even line of dialogue, of a character is written into the script? Again, not how that process works. Producers and/or directors won't buy scripts that have that level of detail in them. Scripts are broad strokes that everyone involved in the process builds upon and expands.

I think the vast majority of us will always prefer Heath Ledger’s Joker. Phoenix’s Joker could be the story of any person with mental illness who finally snaps. The movie’s a character study of a man’s descent into madness and the fact that he dressed as a clown was really just incidental to the story. He could’ve been Smoochy from “Death to Smoochy” and the basic story would remain unchanged. Ledger’s Joker had motives and well-thought out plans and is irreplaceable as a villain.

Although phoenix’s joker was incredibly intense i have to give this one to heath. Its way more tough to standout in a big movie like TDK where you already have so many well written characters and subsequent performances. TDK was not focused on heath, it was a film documenting an event. Look how jared leto failed so miserably in such similar space. While on the other hand, phoenix’s joker was a character study, you either fail or completely immortalised your character in such films, which in case phoenix did the latter. One difference as a viewer is, that both Jokers make me feel differently. Both are great, and both acting is outstanding. Regarding emotional facets of expression Joaquin shows much more inner feelings, while Heath is actually bad-ass mean and cynical pretty much all the time. Joaquin's Joker also works as a stand-alone with no reference to Batman. He is a tragic mentally ill and psychological broken character, who causes me more to feel pity for him. His laughter is often shown in a way, that you notice he is actually in tremendous pain. His motive is not even revenge, it is more like a last ditch self-preservation move in his calamity and psychosis. In it's own context this works very well. I am not sure, if this Joker would actually fit in the DC universe as villain against Batman. He is cast aside and not taken care of like the garbage in Gotham City in this movie. Only at the end of the movie the transition from his self-pity to a self-righteous maniac sociopath may have been well underway towards a more sinister Joker. Still, during most of the movie I simply feel sorry for him. Heath's Joker is a terrorist... a terrifying terrorist. Where Joaquin's Joker is more or less clue-less and makes decisions impulsively on the spot, Heath's Joker plans ahead and coordinates his actions in order to create chaos and anarchy. I like the dirty and evil aura of Heath's Joker. He's got what it takes to be a super-villain simply because of his reckless direct approach. For him violence is not a last resort and act of self-defense for his ego. For Heath's Joker violence is a tool to achieve a goal. Here humans are simply expendable lab rats to the Joker for his plan to work. That is what makes him able to stand-off with Batman. I don't pity Heath's Joker, I fear him. Both movies are great. Both Jokers are awesome. And both movies work in their own right. I personally enjoy watching The Dark Knight more, as it has more strong plot twists and presents a battle of good vs evil, which is much easier to stomach for me than the gradually painful rail-road to inner self-destruction of Joaquin's Joker.

Both Ledger and Phoenix were stellar Jokers. But you can't evaluate which one is "better": it would be like evaluating Bruce Lee in 'Enter the Dragon' to Brandon Lee in 'The Crow.' Completely different movies, different characters, but equally brilliant in their roles. They repeatedly use the same phraseology, though in completely different contexts.

You can easily evaluate which one is a better joker because we know what qualities the character must possess to be a good joker. Fleck doesnt have ANY of those qualities. He is Joker in name alone. To me, Heath and Joaquin's jokers are the same character in evolution. You can see this in their similar lines of ill-thinking and gritty appearance (as with the long hair). I even presume Todd Philips intended it to be this way subtly. He even contemplated giving Arthur fleck mouth scars like Heath's joker. Joaquin is an early version of Joker as a "rookie" crazy man with no experience and in any method in madness, like an amateur criminal. Heath's Joker is a fully defined madman by practice and exploration of his insanity, and his twisted ways flow effortlessly like an accomplished musician or athlete after years of self sculpting of a bent mind. Joaquin is the beginning, a Padawan, and Heath was the end result, a Jedi, so to speak, in Star Wars terms. We will know more when Todd Philips and Joaquin team up for the unexpected but likely sequel, given the great success of the film.

I pretty much love every version of the Joker that isn't Leto's. Even The Batman's dread-locked Joker managed to win me over eventually. Someone once said this about Leto's Joker: "This Joker looks like he is from a good upper-class family". That's so apt. Probably why he just comes off as a poser.

MyFathers TwoAcres I disagree. They cut anywhere from 30 minutes to almost an hour (I can’t remember which) of his scenes - like many were attacking Ayer of romanticizing Joker and Harley’s relationship, and after years of getting shit on for it, he revealed he DID have scenes that showed it was a toxic relationship. And then the idiotic studio hired the company that made wildly popular trailer set to “Bohemian Rhapsody”, and let THEM edit the movie. And since they seemed to have wanted their own “Guardians of the Galaxy” like crew, they’re going to cut some of those Joker scenes. And I doubt he got A LOT of say in character design. I actually like his Joker because of what he represents. Nicholson was designed and written as a mobster - makes sense given the mob prominence at the time. Ledger’s channeling a terrorist vibe - after 9/11 that makes sense as well. Leto’s Joker is more of a gang/crime boss - and A LOT of those guys (especially here in California) are tattooed from head to toe, and don’t go all out in choosing what clothes to wear most of the time. And how they go about doing business. I wish more people would reserve judgement just a little bit given he had so little time on screen - almost so little to form much of an opinion on him.

Honestly, as much as i dislike Leto and despise his Joker, i consider him better than Phoenix's version. Ledger's Joker is one i can admire as a villain. Leto's Joker is one i can hate as a psychopathic monster. Phoenix's Joker maks me feelca mix of pity and disgust, and causing this kind of reaction is the antithesis of Joker's character core. (In fact, in most versions this kind of reaction would serve as his berserk button. The Joker doesn't care about pity. If he can't exploit you, drive you insane or at least scare you so shitless you start nodding and laughing to appease him, then you're worthless to him.)

I feel it is incomparable. Phoenix Joker is more personal, character study, I actually dont like it to be call "is about mentally ill'. Phoenix Joker could happen to anyone, sane or insane... Ledger Joker is more general, it wants to show u the society is sick, all it takes is one push and world will be in chaos. Ledger Joker want show that there is no good person in this world. Ledger is still definitely the worthy Best Supporting Actor in 2008 if tragedy had not happened.

Mental illness is not just brain damage. Anyone can become mentally ill over time. The Depression and Anxiety someone would have from the tragedies of modern life would still be considered mental illness. Therefore any case where someone becomes the Phoenix joker would within itself be considered about mental illness even if they don’t get actual physical brain damage. TLDR: Anyone who gets put into a bad state of mind like Phoenix joker would still be mentally ill

Disagree greatly... lmfao. Pheonix could not happen to anyone, he was mentally retarded.. the world didn't make him like they made it out to be in trailers... He has a laughing disorder, and is extremely awkward, and a head case. He's stupid. He kills for no reason, and reacts... he doesn't think anything through... Character study lol... Try to make it sound all deep, overrated garbage... I guess you can call it a character study, since it focuses on Joker, and there is no Batman... since they show his real life, and hide Heaths... but there's nothing to study, he doesn't make sense... he's not deep at all... he's just annoying, and snaps. Heath has depth, meaning.. his performance is tangible, understandable, thrilling, it makes sense, and when you see the character he looks insane, but feels real, like he could really happen.. Pheonix is annoying... doesn't feel real, feels like he's going to comic con... LOOK AT ME, I'M GONNA WIN AN OSCAR COPYING HEATH. The only difference is one performance is phenomenal, and the other is a cringeworthy rip off.... the phenomenal one is a smart, intellectual character... that could happen to anyone who just can't take it anymore... the other is a retard who wants to be Heath Ledgers Joker. lmfao.

The real difference between the two jokers is Heath's one is actually a DC film where they connected it to batman Vs joker while Joaquin's one is about society and how they treat mental health. They used DC as a base to show and clearly the director didn't really have a clear intention of looking it as a film that'll later connect to batman Vs Joker. But since they use DC as a base they have to show a small segment or bits and pieces of a little batman story.

Awesome video. I just got around to watching Joker last night. I really enjoyed this video. Comparing the two is almost impossible. The one big issue is that 2019's Joker never had much of a plan. In The Dark Knight we don't see HL's motivations and intentions, but we know they're there. We see every step of WP's descent into darkness, but it makes it too clear that there's no real master plan or goal.

Joaquin’s Joker is the peak interpretation of the character for me and here’s why. The killing jokes theme of “one day can man a man insane” is honestly the best theme for the joker in my opinion, it connects the character to Batman in a Ying yang Relationship “Tragedy Made me this way just as it made you that way” Joaquin’s Joker is a full embodiment of that theme, the whole movie his pain was treated as nothing to anyone leading to the ideology of “if my pain is a joke then all pain is a joke”. when he says “I don’t believe in anything” he means it. Joaquin has more time and has whole movie dedicated on the character which naturally allows more character development. Also I love the reason for his laugh I just find that so clever (turning tragedy into comedy). I think another thing ab the joker that I find important is his theatricality and ego. Joaquin dances and is loose while dk joker is stiff having his arms at his sides and Joaquins wears a nice bright vibrant suit while dk joker is dirty and muted and Joaquin’s make up is perfect and clean while dkj is messy. I think this is important bc it shows he likes what he sees and will force gotham to see him too Showing true confidence, that reminds me a lot of hamils joker caring about his looks & putting his face on everything dancing about being a little silly bc he doesn’t care. And In the end we still don’t know if he’s telling us the truth keeping to the multiple choice theme he’s so famous for. There are also other reasons but this comment is long enough and In the end like which ever you like bc they are both great but this is my opinion

Dude, Joker's a genius tactician, inventor, chemist, engineer, etc. He's a way better character when his origin is "multiple choice" as Moore puts it. He's not just some guy with an obscure compulsive laughing disorder. He's an campy, larger-than-life diva who cackles like an idiot because he genuinely thinks he's hilarious. Phoenix's Arthur Fleck, while very sympathetic, is just a talentless klutz in clown makeup. A bitter, brooding, thoroughly mundane creep. No way this chump's fighting Batman. He has none of the characteristics which make the Joker fun and cool. Mark Hamill's renditions of the character have literally all of them. Hamill is the definitive Joker, just like Kevin Conroy is the definitive batman. I dunno how this is even a question. Hamill capture's that manic, obsessed energy perfectly. Best range, most time spent playing the role out of any performer in history, best Joker laugh by a ridiculously wide margin.

Did we watch the same movie lol? While ur entitled to ur opinion of course, I completely disagree. I find the movie is perfect balancing that multiple choice aspect of his character showing how “Arthur” doesn’t know his own reality through the film and then by the end we don’t even know if that reality was ever real to begin with or if it was just a joke. And I totally agree with you the joker is a campy larger then life character which I think Phoenix pulls off brilliantly, he dances and layed back he even calls Murray “Murrayy” just to mess w him bc he’s so divaish. He laughs at his own joker hell even kisses the Doctor bc he just doesn’t care anymore. He acts as if every day is his last day on earth which is how the joker should be If anything I feel Phoenix’s Joker is the most like Hamil’s in that regard, he’s loud, he loves his style, his energey, he’s so theatrical. He also captures the Joker unpredictability (The whole scene w Gary) where you’re never sure if you should be afraid or laugh. I think “some guy with a laughing disorder” or a “talentless Klutz in makeup” is very big over simplification of the character and the movie. There’s so much depth to this character then that, it truly is a man having “one bad day”. Also while I love hamils laugh bc he sounds so chaotic my favorite is Phoenix for the pure reasoning behind it, he can’t cry he can only laugh and that’s so poetic for such a tragic figure like the Joker, this movie captures the idea of the killing joke that the jokers comedy steams from tragedy. And yes he’s not a chemical engineer, (it’s set in a realistic universe, I feel like that’s just so out of place for the story there telling). Also the idea of this guy could never take on Batman never made sense to me, 1.) this is a realistic universe and That idea really doesn’t effect the story they’re telling and 2.) the joker as we see if the events of the end are true Arthur already has a following and plenty of wannabe Hench men, I don’t think it would be that hard to get hostages to mess w Batman. It’s scary to think how much someone can get away with when they can manipulate mass amounts of people (Ex: Charles Manson). Also this is an origin story and by the very end of the film Phoenix hair is a bit gray he’s obviously a seasoned joker (seeing how he killed a therapist while being-handcuffed and got out of a what I assume a locked room) so who knows maybe he is a chemical geniuses all subjective which I love bc the joker is so subjective (one day he could be a terrorist while another he could literally set up a whole scheme just to throw a pie in Batman’s face). Obviously your still entitled to your opinion, but I still believe this is the peak of interpretation of this character due to the depth they took when developing this awesome film.

All he did with his overrated performance was laugh really loud, abruptly stop, talk like a little boy "my mother says blah blah blah", be very shy, awkward, stupid.... then dance completely out of character, very excitingly, very faggy, like it's his big gay broadway break, which was hard to watch... and also smoke, and walk like a badass.... Extremely cringe. Also his Joker was stupid, and didn't make sense with anything he did. It's very cringe to watch him try to play Joker better than Heath, while copying what made Heath great, while also pretending to be different... but not different at all... copied his Anarchist become a symbol ideology... copied his long hair (Joker never had long hair besides Heath), copied his makeup (Joker never had makeup before Heath), copied his dirtyness, copied his seriousness. They are chalk and cheese. They are really playing entirely different versions of the character. I can't imagine Arthur Fleck ever turning into Heath Ledger's Joker. I have a slight preference for the Ledger version simply because he was in a better movie and matching wits with Batman. I love them both but I do believe Phoenix’s Joker is my favorite. Based far more in reality and really makes me question who the good guy actually is.

Ledger's joker obviously had elite military training. A man who lost or believes he's lost everything. He's someone who has nothing to lose which makes him dangerous

Phoenix's Joker is far more benevolent and benign (he refuses to kill people who were nice to him) while Ledger's Joker is a ruthless and vicious psychopath who will literally throw people under the bus to get his way.
