I remember as a missionary saying we practiced poligamy because a lot of women were left without husband because they were killed. Such a week argument.

At one point in my life, I listened to some Mormon missionaries who came to my door when I was in college. I was in a vulnerable place, having broken off an engagement, and hey... they were cute. 😂 After listening to them for one evening, they came back a week later. More listening. At that point, out of curiosity alone, I decided to look into the religion further at my college library. I looked into it far enough that I decided that I now knew more about their faith than they did. Plus, it had been nearly a month since I called off my wedding, my devastation had worn off into “I definitely dodged a bullet”, and I was (I know this sounds terrible) no longer bored enough to entertain the cute Mormon boys. I was giving them false hope, and their religion was not for me. They came back one last time. One of the elders in particular, who had taken somewhat of a shine to me, was very disappointed. When he wouldn’t gracefully accept my polite explanations of “I prayed on it, I’m sorry... it’s not true”, I finally was able to end the visit by saying that I could never worship a God who had once, apparently, seemed so very obsessed with getting men all of the side nookie they could handle, to the point He sent angels with swords to threaten Joseph Smith with death if he didn’t start having sex with yet another woman. Surely angels had better things to do, and surely any God worth His salt would be worried about larger concerns. That was the end of that. I eventually married the love of my life, and we are your nice, boring, live-and-let-live, “church isn’t our thing but we love God” Christians. And I’m still fascinated by cults and study them in my spare time. Thanks for a great video!

How many women were told the "angel with a drawn sword" story?

Joseph Smith did teach sexual polyandry was lawful, when "appointed by the holy anointing" (D&C 132:41-43) The penalty for adultery was death in the Old Testament, and there was no exception clause for those practicing a supposed "higher law"!

Hello Dan, very nice video. I greatly appreciate the scholarly effort. I'm extraordinarily interested in this polyandry issue with the Mormon Church. It was this issue that created for me a faith crisis ending with my resignation three years ago. I also appreciated Bushman's quote at the end of the video. I think Bushman gets it at least as far as polyandry is concerned. A person of integrity won't need to omit or miscontextualize data. A person of integrity won't need to play fast & loose with the facts in order to serve an agenda. It is embarrassingly painful to listen to apologetics try to do what the red chairs in Salt Lake refuse to do. Please keep up the good work I'm asking for you to consider future videos going over the polyandry of Brigham Young, Parly P Pratt, and other LDS leaders. For example, my understanding is that Parly P Pratt was shot by the husband of his seventh wife. There is much history that has been prevaricated out of the faithful narrative I was reared on, which in this case was, "Parly P Pratt died as a martyr while service a mission to the Southern States." Wow, is there an awful lot more to that story which does not serve a faith promoting narrative to the Brigamite Mormon Church. I'm sure there are other examples. As many of us come to an understanding of the extent of deceit by prevarication, equivocation, and duplicity involving the LDS Brigamite practice of plural marriage in general, we naturally question the divinity, the authority based in part by worthiness virtue claims, and virtue of the LDS church. I've lost hope with the LDS church showing accountability for this and some many other issues. In my view, the LDS church will have to confront this issue, admit wrong doing, and repent. Thank you Dan for the effort you have put into the research and making of this video. I appreciate the logical, rather than emotional, look at a very controversial subject. However, even if there were no journal entries and other documents to prove polyandry, the very idea that a woman would want or need to be sealed to Joseph Smith, even if her husband was not a member, just doesn't make sense to me. Why would a man of God come to a married woman and propose to her and divide her loyalties between him and her husband? The prophet today certainly doesn't do that. They tell a woman to be patient and wait until the next life to have that situation remedied. Why would a man of God need to have a 14-year-old sealed to him as a 'plural wife'? Why not let her wait and marry a man closer to her own age, where she would be loved undividedly? Why would a man of God tell women that an angel with a flaming sword would destroy him if they did not acquiesce to his proposals? That is so obviously manipulative that it defies reason. Whether or not Joseph Smith had sexual relations with his plural wives (which I think the evidence does show that he did), the very concept and the way he approached it is suspect.

That ending montage at 55:44 of LDS husbands, their wives and Joseph is very powerful. Amazing the real pain that must have been connected to Joseph's actions during those years.

Dan Vogel: the only way Scriptures can be instructive - as was their intention - is if each person seeks diligently to learn how thin the "veil" between lie & truth (precious/vile). And then to learn to SEPARATE these, first seeking guidance of Holy Spirit, then, by prayerful ENGAGE- MENT of the gift of REASON, determine to separate the poppy seeds from the pepper seeds. Following the instruction God gave Jeremiah (for one) and bearing in mind that "the Word of God is sharper than any two-edged sword, separating even sinew & bone," then we see the necessity of digging for truth as, indeed, BURIED TREASURE. Lucinda lost 2 of 3 husbands to Freemason murders. William Morgan of "The Morgan Affair" (no one was convicted, Knights Templars did it, says Thurlow Weed, to whom they confessed) And Lucinda lost JS, at Carthage where everybody inside the jail and outside the jail was a Freemason. minute 43:40, if you had sex with "The Prophet" you would definitely remember it when you were 88.. At 54:39 you comment that Hales had the "..interpretation that a time and eternity sealing voided a civil marriage...". If civil marriages were performed according to the law of the land, how could a religious ceremony void that law? Unless these couples filed for and received a civil divorce, under the 'law of the land', they were still married, whether they believed they were 'religiously divorced' or not. I am surprised that Hales, a devout Mormon, would consider such a thing as a 'religious divorce' as lawful and attempt to use that as an argument to bolster his case. If Joseph Smith, a legally married man, was consorting with even one legally married woman, they were both committing adultery by law. And Hales continues to defend this behavior?

There's something a little skewy about the logic of the statement by Ruth Sayers' husband. If he "didn't attach much importance to the theory of a future life", why would he insist that his wife "be sealed to the Prophet for eternity"?

The exmormon Reddit has a question about the possibility of beds being in the Nauvoo temple for Joseph Smith to consummate plural marriages in the temple. Have you ever heard this? Is it true, or likely?

Freaky Church history for sure. But that's okay if THE PROPHET says so!

Vogel has confidently asserted that only Smith could have written section 132. This is his easy dismissal of the polygamy-deniers or monogomy defenders. Yet, the anti-polygamy position does not require all of section 132 to be a forgery, only those parts that promote multiple wives. I doubt that Vogel will address this point.

Let me explain some things to you. . one that the essence of life is growth and to become and to overcome. A baby can grow up and become an adult. We can grow up and become like our Heavenly parents. I am only one and the Father of my children that does not mean that there cannot be more fathers. The same is true with our Heavenly Father. He is only one and the Father of our spirits before we got our bodies. That does not mean that there cannot be more fathers. If you new everything you would be a God you are not a God but nearther is a baby an adult. Truly the essence of life is growth and to become and to overcome. We all make mistakes hopefully we learn from them. I have never heard of a perfect prophet prophets have to grow up in understanding faith development to. As we grow up our understanding and perspectives change we become more mature in our potential and understanding. Why dig up garbage that may or may not be true. It is not wise to find fault with Christ and His true prophets. That is like beating a baby down for it's growing process in overcoming and becoming. You would not like someone always rubbing your mistakes in your face. If like was not a learning and growing experience we would all be famed to hell .be those who are insecure with their own weaknesses so they must find fault rather than letting people live down their perceived weaknesses mistakes..you can learn to hate anybody or anything by finding fault. Look at what they did to Christ. Why do some people want to do this today with Christ and His true living prophets and apostles. I can tell you it is our weaknesses that keep us from God. Why call him Heavenly Father unless He is. He is the Father of our spirits. We did live with Him before we got our bodies. Who cares about problems or mistakes. It is the growing up and becoming more and working on our own weaknesses that we need to be concerned with rather than finding fault. Why find fault? the only reason I can think of is Dan is getting alot of milage out of it but I believe he is seriously hurting himself and his potential..we can all know it is best to look for the good and overcome ourselves our weaknesses rather than finding fault. Also much of what he may say is not even true or he puts so much of his own perception into it that it disrupts it's TRUE understanding of what the great prophet Joseph Smith was going through to learn the listens he had to learn to become the great prophet He was.
