Russian ANTY-TOMAHAWK system with artificial intellect (RenTV,Voennaya Tayna)
Narrator A.Prokopenko- military journalist, Commentator A.Zhukov - deputy comstructor
World's only system which has within one turret poweful artillery weapons, multiourpose missiles, radio-locating and optical radar.
Main constructor A.G.Shipunov.
fighting productivity and striking potential of missile-guns system is 2-4 times more effective then only with guns one.
Kashtam-M has better characteristics of both weapons than any analogies
The extremely high striking effect is achieved by:
1)module principle of construction - 1 command module (with own 3-coordinate target detection station "Pozitiv-EM1.2") and up to 6 fighting modules depending on ship class or land proteted area.
2)combination on 1 turret missile - gum weapon and integrated radar weapon controlling system allows to increase the precision of fighting by expeling mistakes caused by of ship hull deformations when weapons and weapon controlling system are disposed in different parts of ship, but this also provides guaranteed elimination of cruising and other missiles by shoting at long range by missiles and at short range by guns, and also to incrase the striking potencial of system in repulsing the massive missile attacks and air raids.
3) Use high-precise interactive targeting (pointing) artifitial intellect system with radio-locating MM-wave band channel -RLS and tv-optical target tracking (following) channel - TOS.
4)super-precise TOS allows to point the missle with less 1 meter accuracy at any altitude flying target. Missle has 5 meter blow radius
5)RLS by using millimeter-wave band with acceptable radar dimensions allows to point the missles at any altitude flying target with 2-3 meter accuracy.It achieved by 2 factors- narrow diagram of directivity and diffus-scattering of dispersing from surface in mm-wave band.
6)Cooperative signal processing of RLS and TOS with automatical chose of the optimal mode of operation also provides high jamming and noise protection of Kashtam-M than systems with only RLS or TOS controlling systems
7)using correlating-contrast signal processing of TOS with a memorization of target shape provides reliable target tracking (following) at any target background environment.
8) using 2 high shooting 30mm guns (GSh-6-30-K) with 6 barrels and 5 400 shots per min (phalanx - 4.7k) - 10 800 total, allows in compare to Goalkeeper(GAU-8/A - gun) reduce suppressing target volley duration for 3 times and reduse 1.5 times middle shooting range up to 300-500 meters, which increase the suppressing probability 1.5-2 times
9)operate and entire automatical regime
Fighting characteristics:
a) 1 Kashtan-M able to suppress 3-4 simultaneously
flying missiles, which is enough for middle tonnage ships. for lager ships which may expect high density of air- missile-raids 2 systems may be installed on each side.Same to land objects.
b)Kashtan-M surpasses by fighting productivity Crotale Naval for 1.5-2 times, Goalkeeper - 2.5-3 times.
Suppressing zone:
missiles
range - 1.5 - 10 km;
altitude 5 meter - 6 km
Guns
range 0.3 - 5 km
altitude 0 - 3 km
Reaction time 5-7 sec
Ammunition:
missiles 8/32
guns 1000
all-time, all-weather regieme
weight
without ammo 7 500 kilo
total 10 000 kilo
PS:NATO armies have no even faint resemblance to such effective guns-missiles-infrared jamming-optical&radiolocating radar systems!Thats even NATO experts confirm!

Yes. Effective range and much higher damage to the target. P.S.: My last statement about lighter bullets was referring to bullets of the SAME caliber. The 30x165, escpecially the APDS ones, is MUCH faster than the 23x115 of the GSh-6-23.

I'll actually comment on the video, instead of making political statements: The Kashtan-M is an excellent close-in weapon system. Much better than our (US) Phalanx.
@CNdailyNews

@tommytmt Actually, the Kashtan is a stand alone unit. It's modular in it's design and the basic design has 6 "slots" for customization. Of course, for each Kashtan, you'd need a Command unit and a Sensor unit, but that leaves 4 units for various weapons. The main choice of the Kashtan has been two 6-barreled Gsh-6-30 guns along with 2 SAM launchers, which 32 missiles in stock per Kashtan system. Ships like the Admiral Kusnetsov have 8 of these systems on it's hull.

Thus, many differences separate this 2 orbitors, here are some: the Buran shuttle have a higher orbital and deorbital carrying capacity, its 2 engines at the rear enables it to fly during the re-entry in the atmosphere, it is equipped with a more powerful heat shield, but the main difference is that Buran can fly in automatic mode without any pilot on-board, from the takeoff of the rocket to its landing on the tarmac.

Yes, it can track up to a 10 targets, and can engage up to 6 (missiles + main gun). Most CIWS don't have missiles built in, like Phalanx or Goalkeeper.
@tommytmt

This is pretty cool, but it just looks SOOO huge...one of the selling points of the phalinx CWIS and Goalkeeper is that they're small(relatively speaking of course), they don't take up much deck space, and they're stand-alone units...meaning that they don't need a command unit, so you could place them almost anywhere. Plus because of it's size it seems like you'd have to redesign the ship's deck just to accommodate it. I'll take Goalkeeper and a separate battery of RAM's over this thing any day

Well, everything can be fooled by anything. Optical, thermal/IR, all that. It's not about the hardware you build. It's about the guy on the control panel that knows the limitations of their system and do what they can to keep the battle space in their favor. I'm sure a few pivots will make a dual cannon accurate enough. Impressive, especially the continued focus on certain aspects of Russian technology.

The cartridge plays a huge role, of course. The bullet of the 14.5x114 has about the same muzzle velocity as the 5.56x45 and weighs ca. 19 times more. But it has a maximum (not to be confused with effective) range of 9000 m vs. 2800 m for the 5.56. Lighter bullets are preferred for the AA role because of theit higher velocity and lesser travel time to target, though.

If you knew Russian, you'd know that this is a COMBINATION of high-caliber machine guns AND anti-missile missiles. The system decides which to use, depending on the nature of the target and the distance to it.

The F-117 shot down by the Serbia was hit by luck. The rockets were blind fired in to the expected trajectory of the F-117. The F-117 was developed in the 1970s, it entered service in 1982 and was retired in early 2008. The F-22 now does the Low observable missions.

Replying to your comment from ages back lol The missile that hit F-117 was guided by a low-freq radar to within a sight distance (1-3km/1-2miles) where its too close for the missiles radar not to see the F-117. after that missile got to it on its own. PS low-freq radars see planes such as B-2 and F-22. For example OTH radars used in Russia, Australia, USA and some others can see Stealth planes as per normal.

It's a question of sensors and the role of a weapon. Phalanx is small, self-contained, and can be bolted to almost an open place on a ship's deck with the proper clearance and fire arcs. The missile component, short range interception, is handled by the ESSM (Evolved Sea Sparrow) which is designed as a four pack for the VLS cells on US Cruisers and Destroyers. And while Kashtan's sensor suite is impressive, it's nothing compared to ESSM linked to AEGIS. It's just different design ideals.

Luck does not exsist, probability does. The F-117 was NOT shot down by a radar aimed or controled gun. The tactic of firing anti-aircraft shells with timed or VT fuses in to the proximity of the expected location of enemy aircraft is hardly new, It was used against the Luftwaffe by the Soviet army in WW2 very effectivly.

The Kashtan is the no. 1 CIWS (Close-In Weapons System) in the world. Granted, there are better short-range SAM systems, and there are better short range AA guns, but the Kasthtan provides a terribly efficient two-in-one package unlike any other currently in existence.
@blindandwatching
@blindandwatching 14 лет назад
Low observable is intended to delay detection of the aircraft or missile by a few seconds, this degrades the effectivness of weapons like Kashtan that have only a short window of oppertunity to act. I might also add that the USN has lightweight decoy rockets that can be fired along with Harpoons. The decoys are noisey and have strong radar reflections. While Kashtan is busy firing at them the Harpoon hits and blows a nice hole in your vessel.

Aegis has been under constant development since the 1970s. The Aegis system is much more powerful now than it was in the 1980s. The Russian Mars-Passat (NATO: Sky Watch) didn't work. Russia still uses MR-800 Flag (NATO: Top Pair) and Fregat (NATO: Top Steer and Plate Steer) radars for air defense which are inferior to USN/NATO Indian, and Chinesse systems. Russia needs KASHTAN-M desperatly.
"hit by luck" doesn't exist
Fine, I'll rephrase: The F-117 shot down in Serbia was hit because anti-aircraft munitions were fired in to the expected flight path of the F-117 resulting in a high statistical probability that a shell would hit the F-117 because of the large number of shells passing through the area would result in at least one shell being in the right place at the right time.

foxbat008, "2. Talk about Dumb - They built a carbon copy of our shuttle and don't use it = Brilliant." It wasn't used because of money problems. But the design of the Buran is great and different than the U.S space shuttle. In a test it flew in space and back without people on board. All on remote control. It also could carry more load.

First, I have to correct myself. Russia DOES have DU ammunition for its MBT's. As for performance of tungsten and DU penetrators: it's about the same. DU is preferred due to lower costs, ease of production, "self-sharpening" and incendiary effects. When it comes to ballistics, heavier bullets of the same caliber will travel further due to higher sectional density and ballistic coefficient. --> continues in the next comment

foxbat008. When U.S engine factory engineers visited Russian factory in the mid 90's they were in for a big surprise. When they saw a old RD-60 engine on display they said that the U.S had tried to build this kind of engine for decades but failed to do so. They thought the Russians had failed also! The Russians told these engineers that these kind of engines were already in use in the 60's!!!

The Kashtan and Palma are the best CIWS systems available. Phalanx isn't nearly as effective as many people think. Phalanx is not able to intercept the Russian A-S missiles. That's why Phalanx ship defences are being upgraded with missiles.(seaRAM)

Its a sweet system, similar to the vehicle mounted Tungustka air defense "tank" that used the same missile/gun idea. I have to point out, to the author that NATO didnt combine the technologies because their Anti-cruise missile rockets were so effective as to render a cannon system needless.

A gatling gun can take out a missile, helicopter and airplanes. It uses ammunition which is affordable to disperse and plentiful. A rail gun needs a high electric charge to disperse the projectile. It's range is so short a cruise missile would sink the ship before it's in effective range. Not only that but with the rail gun the projectile is fired upward and fall donwrard. It's trajectory would give it away. Kashtan would mince ANY hypersonic target IF it's within range of altitude & distance.

Well, the rounds don't really go "all over the place", it just seems that way because of the way the missile traverses the ship's vector. As for the idea behind using SAMs and guns on one turret: CIWS systems are a last resort. If you use a SAM to counter an incoming missile, you'll need to train it directly onto the target - which rules out VLS. You don't want to use the main radar to steer the SAM into the incoming missile, as that's tracking the source of the missile. It's cheaper to combine!

The Rail gun only has a range of 25 kilometers. It can be used on ships but not that effectively. It takes a high charge to discharge the projectile. It can not be launched back to back like a cruise missile. That's actually the least of it. It can only be used on short range combat because it has no propulsion. A 50 mile range ASM can take out a US ship equipped with it's rail garbage. The rail gun is an exotic weapon, but also a relatively useless weapon.

Because there are no APDS rounds in 23x115. Even if they would exist, they still couldn't match the speed of the 30x165 counterpart. The cartridge case is just too small compared to the latter.
@blindandwatching

Stealth is not correct. The USN uses the correct term "Low observable" to describe what is called stealth by elected officials. "Low obsevable" makes it difficult to acquire and hold a radar lock on an object. The USAF has always used heavy jamming and radar supression in F-117 operations. Newer weapons are faster and can detect the search radar on the Kashtan and evade it. The USN has the Rolling airframe missile which is in the same class. Kashtan has been in service for many years.
