@Joe Bob Hey, Im born and raised in New Orleans. I was fortunate enough to have family and the means to evacuate, but many people still dont have access to vehicles or have enough money to even evacuate to another city let alone take a weekend off for Also, our city has been through a number of Hurricanes. Older people had experienced Hurricane Betsy and Andrew and were in the mindset of "Well, i lived through those then I'll be ok". The Bush administration and 'Brownie' response to Katrina was pretty abysmal, so much so that every presidency afterwards has made it a point for a natural disaster to become "their Katrina". This was due to the fact that much of the response was privatized and a lack of actually caring. See: Spike Lee's 4 hour documentary on this for a deeper perspective into how residence were impacted

@Basedeath
@Basedeath 8 лет назад
You being a Libertarian and against both of those things does not mean all Libertarians are. Libertarians main thing is pro business at any cost, so why would they be against patents which is a protection of a corporations assets? Monsanto is a greatly successful business, which is like a religion to Libertarians so it wouldn't make sense for them to be against it. Some may disagree with their business practices in some regards but I am sure most admire their success.
@zachjohnson637
@zachjohnson637 8 лет назад
***** You seem grossly misinformed as to what libertarianism is. Libertarians do not blindly support big corporations. We are against most forms of intellectual property and corporate welfare. Monsanto became what it is today at the hand of specialized government regulations. Just because you have a biased viewpoint as to what libertarianism is does not make it true. Please become a little more informed on the topic.
@Basedeath
@Basedeath 8 лет назад
Really, libertarians can't even seem to agree on what libertarianism is. Just look at Gary Johnson vs ..I am guessing here.. big eared air quote man?.. But regardless of what you believe, deregulating everything will have a particular set of results. What do you suppose a company will do if you remove all environmental protections? Corporations have been buying influence and writing laws in their favor for decades now. Libertarians believe government can't govern, I believe the free market will not regulate itself without harming everything in its path in the name of profits.
@canteluna
@canteluna 7 лет назад
***** "so you ignore that you are FREE from others control in a FREE market and blame the problems of corporate fascism on freedom" I don’t ignore it, I deny it -- because it's a lie. No one is “free” absolutely as a result of a free market. Freedom is conditional, relative. We have freedoms - plural. Freedoms are rights and where do rights come from? They come from a social contract. Where do social contracts come from? A political process. What makes a political process possible? A government. What makes government possible? People who want and create it, such as our founders and those of us who continue to want and maintain it. Freedom is not merely ‘freedom from” (negative freedom) as you define it, but also “freedom to” (positive freedom). By your definition the homeless are free. Obviously, that isn’t the case. None of us are FREE from NECESSITY nor from the control or impact of others in a shared society. We are all interdependent and our actions impact each other. That FACT is why we have a political process. Positive rights, rights to, also give us freedoms. The citizen with rights (to healthcare, education, infrastructure, a relatively clean environment, etc.) is more free than those without these rights. As FDR said, the necessitous man is not free. As Jefferson said, "To secure these [inalienable] rights [to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness], governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed... “ “monsanto wouldnt have its power over individuals w/o government” First of all, there is no market without government so all these hypotheticals about a government-free markets are a wasteful indulgence. Anyone who suggests such a thing is profoundly ignorant of the facts of how the state and the modern market are, and always have been, intertwined. The hypotheticals should be ground in reality. We can ask how would Monsanto operate without certain government regulations. It isn’t difficult to extrapolate on that hypoethetical because we know how Monsanto and other businesses acted until restricted by regulation. But, actually, I agree with your statement in its naïve form because Monsanto wouldn’t EXIST without government and certainly the laws that give rights/power to Monsanto exist because of government. So in that sense you are right. And neither would your freedom and power/rights exist without government. But more to the point, government, because of the level of regulatory capture, cronyism and corporate control of much of the political and legislative process does result in a level of “power” for Monsanto and other big businesses. What is the source of this government capture? Is there something inherent in our government structure that makes this capture necessary or inevitable? But what you’re inferring is more the issue. This is the tired lie of libertarians that Monsanto couldn’t FORCE consumers to do anything without the power of the state behind it. Again, we can’t fantasize about a society without government but we can look at examples of weak states and “black markets”. Examples of weak states are many. They are easily overrun by private power. Look at the drug cartels in Colombia in the 80s and 90s. Is it government that FORCES black market businesses to use violence as a means to its ends? Don’t libertarians preach the laughable nonsense that without government initiation of force, businesses will all self regulate to the satisfaction of consumers and never aggress towards other businesses? Of course the government isn’t stopping them from doing so now but that is an inconvenient truth that doesn’t fit libertarian ideology so it must be ignored. PROPERTY IS CONTROL. And property rights are what libertarians are all about. That is your idea of freedom. To be free to exercise tyrannical/sovereign control over your property. But this begs the question, where does the concept of private property come from? It ONLY exists as a result of government. It is the monopoly power of government that determines the amount of CONTROL over property. But when that “property” happens to be the commodification of resources necessary for human survival and well being - long understood by human social organization to be collective property -- then there is a NATURAL conflict between property owners/appropriators and the system that enables it, and everyone else. Government exists to mitigate that conflict and govern resources. That’s there will always be government of some kind.

Almost all of trump's policies are completely opposite of libertarian policy. Trump's kill terrorist families policy, torture policy, wall policy (which would be so incredibly impossibly expensive that no taxpayer should ever support it), and all the rest of his ridiculous fascist shit is not libertarian. Libertarians don't want to deport 14 million people. They don't want to be on watch lists unable to exercise their rights because they're on some watchlist for something completely innocent. Frankly I think you're just looking looking at the radical part of the libertarian party, and ignoring any of the policies moderate libertarians support. Trump doesn't support a free market. Also why do you make those ridiculous blanket statements about liberarians thinking they're superior or the fittest? You're drawing huge conclusions from a small subset of the party. Also your comment is not legible. If you have any actual rhetoric in there I'd love to hear it. Jesus I'm debating people in the youtube comments. What am I doing.

I find it comedic, that Darryl Perry gave a "really concise" 30 second answer - of which about 90% you could have cut anyways. He could have just said "Let just companies pay for it. People were literally starving to death and the "caretakers" for the rich were left behind to eventually starve and be eaten by their pets when it was too late to leave. Don't tell me about how well the market works and then use post-Katrina NOLA as a fucking example. There were some people who acted bravely and selflessly. But our government was not there to step in when the wealthy acted like the selfish bitches they are and chose their own crap over the lives of people who had worked for them for years. And before you victim blame those who died, keep in mind that it costs money to leave your home, and hindsight is always 20/20.

Libertarian's version of a Fire Dept is the Privatized Fire Dept just like they had over hundred years ago. Everyone would buy Fire Insurance and the Fire Dept that you had insurance with would come by and put out any fire at your house. The problem with this is that fires burned down several blocks because not everyone could afford the Fire Insurance. These Privatized Fire Depts wouldn't put out fires at houses that didn't have insurance. Now if we Privatize the Fire Depts now, you would have a Pay Scale system. The Quality of Fire response and Assistance that you would get would probably be based on how much you paid for your insurance. This, I would imagine, would also include response time. You want a faster response time, then you would have to pay more. Libertarians are Corporate America best friends. They do all their leg work for them.

This guy is very confused, and he uses the old "who will pick cotton without slaves" argument. Roads are a market incentive. It will exist as far as the market demands it, so of course a business won't build a road only to their institution. They will form agreements with adjacent institutions to build roads to one another, because this will create bigger markets. Sam's lack of vision and ability to think through a contractual relationship is an illegitimate criticism of the libertarian solution, particularly when the roads today utilize similar complex contractual relationships. It's like saying governments can't build roads today because it goes through private property. Secondly, on Johnson's solution, NO its not like a tax for companies to request fees, because you can have people pay fees as far as the amount of roads they choose to use. Taxes don't give you a choice about the service you use. I won't be funding roads in a distant state for example. The truth is that the solutions are endless to this problem, and that's the concluding point Austin makes. I hope those of you watching this are able to reason beyond the foolishness of the talk show host.

Do you have any clue how much a road costs? What small business would be able to afford a fucking road to their business? Small businesses account for 50% of the employment in america. You complain that small businesses don't have the money to pay workers a minimum wage, and that paying a few dollars more an hour to employees would destroy small businesses - but you think a small business would have BILLIONS OF DOLLARS to be able to build roads? Nothing would destroy small businesses, and half of the employment of america quicker - then demanding that they build roads.
@TheAdamlans
@TheAdamlans 8 лет назад
Justin Beagley Making a road costs a lot, so if you have multiple companies bidding for the job, you reduce cost, and the businesses that are successful at making a quality road, with low cost, are the ones that are in demand. You're right in that nothing happens until the small business man consents/can afford the deal to build the road. If no one can afford to pay for roads, the market deflates, and prices go down: This fundamental economic principle is really important to understand. Just something to consider. With government, there is no competition; there is inflation, rather than deflation. If they go over budget, no worries, what they charge to tax for roads increase because there is no competition which deflates the prices. This is ultimately how the government extorts people: They tell everyone to pay tax against their will (you go to jail for not paying tax). This means the budget for the government building roads ultimately becomes to make something just mediocre enough to keep people complacent, and just low enough to keep people complacent aout the taxes they pay, rather than meeting actual demand. This is ultimately how unethical behavior also leads to bad economics. When you take from many using force, the product you design for the many is always more expensive, and lower quality. It's also fundamentally unethical to take from people without consent. I'm not telling you to adapt this belief, I'm just suggesting to contemplate it a little more, and view government with a little more skepticism.
@justinbeagley5151
@justinbeagley5151 8 лет назад
Adam Lans lol - so since small businesses won't be able to afford roads - the road makers will decrease their prices? Or road makers will do the intelligent thing, and look for billionaires who can afford their prices. Or, to lower the costs of making roads for small businesses, they'll hire illegal immigrants who are willing to work for 2 cents an hour. Or better yet - they'll do what capitalists have already done - when they stop paying workers a decent wage, and no one can afford their products - instead of cutting down their prices, they simply tell you to go get a loan from a bank so you can still afford their product. Also - none of what you just said deals with the OBVIOUS problem - roads will only be built to their establishment. if you honestly think that a bunch of private corporations could design and build roadways that are even HALF as efficient as our government did - you're delusional. oh wait... you think taxation is theft... you are delusional. Go look up Freud's 'social contract' - read the constitution - understand that you were born onto land that our government claimed, so no - you're not on your land, and yes you do owe our society, which is represented by our government, for living on this land we've provided for you. don't bother responding.
@johnkosowski3321
@johnkosowski3321 8 лет назад
Why do you think government could be more efficient than competing businesses? Do you know how to make a 50" flat screen TV for $1,000? Do you think the government could? Or do you think that once businesses start competing, those things get solved? Does the government care if you sit in traffic? If we get rid of slavery, who will pick the cotton? The roads problem is not even a problem, and watching Sam laugh about it is like watching a child. Who will pay for the roads? The people that use the roads will. Will there be a market to have roads? Why do you think there wouldn't be?

Im not sure how the few remaining businesses pay rent, let alone employee wages so they haven't repaired it. Theres huge potholes thats gotten a lot worse.
