I have never heard a public defender sound so disconnected from their clients case. It's quite obvious he doesn't believe Lori Vallow. He sounds sorry he's there, he doesn't want to defend her, he's just there to make sure her rights aren't violated. So glad you discussed this, Peter, it just sounded so off key to me. Love these updates 👍🏾

Oh trust me Archibald is not just a public defender. You couldn't be more confused if you believe that. He is known throughout the State for Criminal Defense. He was a special appointment.

@@JoeLene_ I didn't say he was bad at his job, he's no Elaine 😭, but he didn't sound as though he believed his client and was vigorously advocating her innocence. Both of this things can be true at the same time.

Prosecution: Wrecks it, Defense: We are the defense for Miss Daybell. The defense for Miss Daybell we are. We are here to defend because defend is what we do. As a defense, we defend people like Miss Daybell, which we defend. We defended people before, we'll probably defend people after. Defense is what defense does, is defense. Thank you.

I'm glad that I wasn't the only one who thought or felt like the defense opening was odd/weird. Almost as if he was saying, "there is no doubt that my client was there and involved, to that I can't defend her, there's nothing I can do" it was so strange and felt wrong, like a billboard for hiring him or voting for him (is he running for office?)

Yes, he's pretty low energy and it did sound like an advert, but don't underestimate him. Right now he's trying to remind people that defense attorneys defend. That's their job. Defense attorneys probably have worked with many unsavory characters. People say horrible things about defense lawyers but that's how the system works.
@windywednesday4166

This is crazy. First, it became clear that Terry Sanderson's lawyers didn't believe him. The closing was pure cringe. Then, the opening for Latisha Stauch, where her lawyer begged the jury not to hate him, and now this. I wonder if social media attention is getting to these guys.

Okay, I went to school in Rexburg nearby (judge away) and have a lot of family in SE Idaho. Literally my grandpa was prosecuting attorney a few counties over until he got sick of people and went back to farming. I think some of the cultural quirks, similar to what a lot of people saw in the Paltrow case, that feel very familiar to me, but I can understand why many people have issues. 1) This is a small, sparsely distributed population in Fremont County. There is a unique mix of strong independence and tight community bonds. You need to be able to take care of yourself, BUT you may also be the closest person to help your neighbor in a tight spot (and vice-versa). There is some more variance up in the vacation areas. 2) At least half the county population is LDS/Mormon. Which has huge focus on community bonds AND also on following rules. Lori is already on the back foot because how her and Chad's beleifs morphed away from "the rules". Those two things are relevant, particularly for the Defense Attorney, because culturally, there is an expectation to "own up" to your sins/failings/mistakes. In part to take accountability and responsibility, and in part to not make it more difficult for anyone who may need to help you. I think the defense attorney's statements about most of his cases being resolved are partially to show that HE isn't there to fight for Lori because they're buddies, but for her rights. (Also a VERY strong tendancy to question gov in this area.) It carefully clarified his role to the jury, while somewhat implying that the only reason they got to trial is that the government was trying to push too far. Honestly for who i guess to be on this jury, I think he threaded the needle well. Still preferred prosecution's opening, but in context, I think defense did a good job.
