One big problem with the X-men over the last 2 decades or so is consolidating practically the entire Mutant race, including evil mutants and just sort of bundling them all within the X-men fold while simultaneously estranging and separating them from the rest of the Marvel universe and making the main focus of their existing in trying to preserve themselves. It makes the team look like closed off weirdos instead of a group of heroes who protect both mutants and humans from the bad guys.

It's ridiculous that the people making comics don't understand how much power they have if they create a good book we want to read. You can tell stories about important things that people will enjoy and talk about for years if you stick to playing in the sand box you're given.
@dorbie
@dorbie 6 месяцев назад
The merging of various characters into shared Universes rarely makes sense anyway. The most obvious question is where the heck everyone else goes during various world jeopardizing crises tackled in a storyline. Each hero or team really only makes sense in their own universe and it starts to make less and less sense the more you force them into the same play pen. Crossovers used to be special events and nobody worried too much about it. The appeal of X-Men was the plug and play superpower combos in a consistent world. Now folks expect a consistent Universe and even Multiverse and it's stretched thin. When you have a pantheon of every superhero in one Universe then nothing's really super anymore.

@@legkick1 You can't do much worse than CREATIVELY DEAD at this point, and Marvel may as well be owned by Disney -- they're both ineptly run with the same ESG/DIE directives. Only the reprints are profitable, and arguably only the reprints of material published before 2000 are profitable! PS -- I meant DIE, not "DEI." It might as well be DIE because that ideology has been the kiss of death to every company that's employed it in large-scale productions.

You hit the nail right on the head, Ethan. X-Men, Spider-Man, and comics in general can be enjoyed by all manner of people, regardless of our differences. As kids growing up in a Black community, my friends and I had no problem seeing ourselves in heroes like Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, Iron Man, or Cap. They didn't need to look like us, share our culture, financial standing, faith (or lack thereof), sexual orientations, etc. We didn't care. We simply thought they were cool and wanted to be as strong and cool as they were! If these writers of modern comics truly wanted to find the same success the industry had in the past, maybe they should've stopped attacking and alienating 95% of their audience... i.e. the boys and men who wanna see superheroes doing superhero stuff and perhaps undergoing meaningful (and lasting) character arcs.

I’m not even a hardcore comic book fan (I do have a small graphic novel collection of stuff that catches my eye, walking dead, preacher, the fade out, criminal etc,) but keep it up, because these guys should all be exposed for their fan hatred. A. They don’t deserve a penny of the fans money and B. They need to be exposed for their lack of concern for the fans enjoyment & and sometimes their total lack (or care) of knowledge about the characters they’re writing for & along with no idea how to write AS & FOR the characters & from their perspective. They only care about their own, and by basically stealing a paycheck & not doing the job they were hired for (by injecting themselves & their political beliefs into characters it makes no sense to,) they’re scumbag grifters.

I really don't think X-Men was intended to be about puberty either. I read it as a boy because the idea of "mutants" and mutation ( particularly ) in the atomic age-cold, war era, ( and the Bug Eyed Monster Genre propagated in genre fiction at that time ) was creepy and neat. The X-men were creepy misfit weirdos that stood outside of the central Marvel universe of the 60s and 70s. I liked their unusual look, the super action, and Jean and Ororo's hot boobs and curves. I like fight scenes, cliff Hagers and unrealistic plots that don't attempt to become film or novels. I like primary color comics. I loved the Byrne-Claremont run. I don't really care otherwise. these days, I just read my collection of comics from the 70s and 80s, which I initially picked up as an eleven year old boy, along with a Slurpy and a Snickers bar from the local 711, starting back in 1975. Right now I'm really into Love and Rockets and Nexus. I can't wait to start reading CyberFrog, which looks like something I would have went nuts for when I was 11 yrs old, which means I'd love it at 59. Take it easy.

Guys, the goal is not to make superhero comics for superhero comic book readers; the goal is to maintain trademarks and copyrights so that they can exploit more profitable markets like merch, movies, TV and video games. Therefore, anyone who has hope that the DC and Marvel comic lines will improve is lying to themselves at this point. Personally, I'm selling off my comics collection. There's no point in holding onto the past when there's no hope for the future of the superhero subgenre. I think we need to move onto Manga, indies, or in my case, novels. Where the actual quality is.

Yeah. I like cyclops because he's cold but capable. Wolverine wears his emotions on his sleeve. But he's a failed samurai. Beast is a genius and a clown to blow off steam. Nightcrawler is fun loving and a man of faith. And so on. We liked the X-Men because we can identify with them. I have nothing in common with Angel besides skin color, but I understand how anger and regret can change a person. We see the X-Men not on appearance, but their personalities and struggles, as we all have.

I thought the message that we were _supposed_ to get from the X-men was to not judge a book by it's cover, and that also you should always do the right thing because it is the _right_ thing to do, even if you'll get spit on by the very people that you help afterwards. It never ceases to amaze me that the people in charge of writing the X-men stories now simply can't seem to wrap their heads around those two very simple concepts.

If faulty sinister clones was the best hypothetical he could come up with to retcon all of this then it isn't just the writers at marvel who are creatively bankrupt, its the editorial staff too. The Mystique and Destiny parentage was dead in the water by the time they were even part of an X-Men story. Claremont is a good writer but even he had bad ideas that only fed his kinks. He was the one to reveal that Nightcrawler's longtime girlfriend and love of his life was actually his adoptive sister catfishing him. Honestly, I don't really buy modern mainstream comics. The last American comic I bought was Punisher Max. Most of my reads these days are from manga and non-American comics like Trese. And wouldn't you know it? Manga and non-American comics actually tell stories without talking down to their audience nor do they highlight some cringe social issue that literally nobody but some weirdoes online to schlick off to but never actually support financially. Hell, back when I was a little kid in preschool. I honestly liked comic books like Superman, Batman, the Justice League, Spiderman, Captain America, the Avengers, and the X-Men. Even when I didn't understand the more serious narrative undertones of these stories but I still enjoyed the idea of superheroes punching out supervillains and saving the day. Looking back, I can appreciate the serious messages in those stories. These days, modern Marvel and DC comics are less about superheroes and supervillains and more about activists dressing up in spandex and calling their enemies bigots. That's why I'm no longer bothering with Marvel or DC these days. It's just activists and pigs masquerading in spandex and talking down to people.

Let's face it - Stan himself said the whole Mutant thing was basically just a way of having lots of new super characters without having to do complex origin stories for each of them. And when you look at classic runs, like the Claremont / Byrne run, how much of it was based on being hated outsiders seeking to be themselves etc? Days of Future Past and that's it. The rest was essentially Team-book Spider-Man - usual superheroics every month but the characters - unlike Superman and the like - were not particularly popular or liked. And that was about as far as it went. Hell, the whole reason the "God Loves, Man Kills" graphic novel stood out so much at the time was because that was the first time any real focus had been placed on that sub-text. The first time in 20 years. People like Brevoort have no idea and the sales reflect that..

Ethan, Tom is right about one thing he said, and you should always grant your opponents a point when earned. The X-Men’s premise is 100% the message. Always has been. The X-Men CAN mean whatever you want it to mean, but Stan and Jack meant the story to be a direct analogy - not allegory because allegory isn’t a perfect match - to the racism American blacks were experiencing, and even more specifically about the ideological tug-o-war between King and Malcolm X. You, I, and everyone in this comment section knows this is true. What you’re missing in your critique of Tom is this: Since the premise is already the message, you can stop shoving your clumsy messaging down our throats. We were already on board with treating people equally. That’s a big reason why we’re already fans of the franchise. So since we’re reading X-Men because we believe all people should be treated equally, maybe shift some of your unnecessary political focus over to DECENT STORYTELLING.

I thought the X-men were about a group of Mutants who have begun to slowly crop up in the 20th century and in to the 21st century. Each one having a seemingly random roll of the dice on the mutation that they acquire at puberty, some being innocuous while others being down right deadly, and with no easy way to learn how to control the mutation, and subsequent fear, and shame overtaking them... a hero of Mutants forms a team to help those in the most dire need of it. Oh, and I thought it was about having sexually attractive super heroes doing awesome things, in high danger action scenes, and charming displays of odd family dynamics, mixed in with heart warming relationships and no small amount of tension toward the wild world that Mutants were popping up within. Maybe I read it wrong though, maybe it is just about black people, trans people, and the gays. like everything else is now. Guess that is possible too.

If the X-Men is supposed to be an allegory for the gay experience, why do they have to literally make them all gay?

I was alarmed about Emma Frost’s future in X-Men 97 upon finding out this guy isn’t fond of her. One look at his face and it all makes sense, I guess Emma Frost reminds him too much of all the real life women who would never even lay an eye on him

The Hellfire Gala one ? It looks nice on him but he's more of a wanna-be pirate than an aristocrat. It doesn't help that the boots he wears shouldn't be able to fit his feet.
