Hello, I would like to know why when singing torn voices and Scream in the black metal style, why does the digastric muscle tense a lot? and it hurts a little to touch that muscle. Is it true that you have to put tension on the diaphragm to be able to retain air?

Hello, I am long time singer trying to expand my horizons. After a year of working with vocal coach I am starting to having a grip on frys, but they're still unstable. I practice everyday on my way to and from workplace, like 20-30 minute car trips, and sometimes I can sing along with Architects and Currents, but sometimes I just can't make my throat vibrate, I can do clean vocals, but if I try to add some compression it just not happen and sounds like a whistling, like when you push too much on true cords. Any help? Also, I'm trying to develop growls for some time and don't think I ever had progress on this. Tried your methods like deep sigh, or clear throat at cinema and it's not working for me, sighs don't have overtones, and clearing throat quickly starts to hurt. Any other ways to find out what my false cords is and how to apply them right?

idk if it's suitable for here or for a short, but I've been listening for Imperial Circus Dead Decadence for a while now and I just can't wrap my head around those super high pitch screams Rib:y(uhki) does. you can find an example of that in the first scream of their song "Uta". I would really love it if you can make a short or something teaching how to scream like that!

Hi David, firstly im a massive fan of yours and literally you are so helpful my dude. Secondly, this may sound naive, and as a vocalist surely i should know my body but id just thought id get a bit of insight. In rehearsal , i scream, fry, guttural, mixed with mid to high cleans and hybrid vocals for around 3 hours pretty much non stop. Obviously we have breaks in between songs around 1 min max, but my question is, after these 3 hour sessions, i do find my throat is a bit hoarse, i cannot hit a 'usually' easy mid falsetto note (yet can easily hit a higher one) and my mid range feels 'weird'. i also wake up to a dry throat and a bit of a grunty voice. Does this mean i am not performing my vocals correctly or is it just over use in rehearsal? the reason i ask is i have found over the past 6 months, my mid cleans seem to be hit or miss when i go to produce the vocal. It sometimes is just air, or sometimes very squeaky. Other times its fine, but i really have to focus to produce the vocal, yet much higher cleans i hit with ease, literally no strain or trying involved. Any insight id be really grateful for my dude

I've commented saying this, before, but, I'll say it, again: I have progressed soooo much with my voice because of your videos. I mainly only did lows cuz fry screams just seemed intimidating to me lol. 6 months later, I'm mixxing gutterals, fry screams, false chord screams and gloterrals. Thank you. I still have lots of practice ahead of me, but, you clarified sooo much for me.

Just starting out screaming, wondering the best course to take vocals from starting out just doing the "mahhhh" false chord to actual lyrics. I feel I can hold an open scream pretty well, but trying a sentence with any sort of longevity is super challenging. Thank you so much, your work and dedication to this is so amazing.

i know i’m not him BUT i’ll tell you how i did it and you can take it from there! when i could comfortably activate false chord i tried talking and applying it. found stuff that was a bit lower singing/speaking wise such as rammstein and then started using false chord and then talking the lyrics instead of singing. you want to be as loosey goosey as possible. barely any effort at all in it just enough push in the stomach to get distortion and almost zero tightness in the throat. then add a bit of talking and go from there. i found my natural end to be lower like bozeman. then just gradually add power whenever i feel like my screams are getting slightly painful i reset myself and go back to the talking and less effort

Thank you so much! I've been practicing simplifying, not changing pitch or the position of my throat too much once I lock onto a nice fry. I think I was trying to do too much too soon without realizing it. My fav band is In Flames, and sometimes I confused the melody track and the scream track, thinking the scream line is more complex than it is. Anyway, thanks so much, David!
@Burkwood
@Burkwood Год назад
So, I've been working with this idea of not letting the singing track of the music I practice to suck me into trying to copy the melody with screaming. I'm learning(it seems to me currently) that you need to almost create a scream "harmony" line, because the mouth shapes for singing are so different from those of screaming. Ironically, I'm having more success practicing screaming along to singing songs than trying to scream to scream songs. Breakthrough. 🤘

Hey David! When I was born my tongue bridle (the thing that connects the tongue to the bottom of the mouth) was not cut, and it limits my ability to manipulate the tongue, especially with open mouth. For example I cant touch the roof of my mouth with the tip of my tongue while my mouth is wide open, and I cant stick out the tongue further than 2-3 cm from my teeth. And so it somewhat affects my ability to shape the tone of my screams. I still can do tunnel throat and goblin thing, but my low screams both FC and fry are feeling a bit weird and underpowered. I was wondering if you have ever had experience with someone like me? If so if there's any advice you can give on how to go around it? Thank you!

Question: I (kind of) can mix the scream with notes on different level in chest and head registers. But when I am trying to scream in mixed register (E4 - B4) everything breaks apart, the scream become uncompressed and the note jumps high up and becomes very light and almost unhearable. I tried to add more force or control while going up, but then I just cannot go higher the note is stuck in E4-F4.

Hi David, been a fan of yours for about a year now. I started my heavy vocals journey back in 2009 by singing along with 5FDP "Way of the Fist" album. Since then, I've taken a lot of your advice on the channel and applied them to my singing. That said, one thing still eludes me. When I try and aim high, especially on fry screams, I get a harsh gag reflex. It's caused me to vomit from doing covers of Mudvayne's "IMN" and pretty much every Lorna Shore song. Any idea what causes that reflex and what steps can I take to avoid it or overcome it? Thanks for the information and I look forward to a part 2.

In relation to oxygen control and throat tension, how will we know we’re using our “golden spot” of both? I’ve tried to utilize more oxygen with less tension and I would either cough or dry out quickly and when I do the opposite (less air higher tension) I begin to sort of Lowkey sound more like a burp. I’m a heavy smoker but used to be a front man before all the smoking and could still never hit the pitches I wanted.

Is it actually dangerous to do inhale screams? My person problem is that i can't do fry screams, regardless of how often I try to do them. It's just much easier to do inhales for me and I honestly don't feel like it hurts oder endangers my vocal chords. At first, when I started inhale screaming, it actually tensed up as I tried to get louder, yet now I don't have to try as hard and it doesn't feel or look like i actually tense up. Is it safe to go on with inhales?

Yo David, I have a question about false chord screaming. I'm not practicing them very long, and also not often. When combining the normal singing voice, and the false chord, it starts hurting really fast, I guess because of vocal chords working same time. When singing with harsh vocals (being a new singer in this area) sometimes I feel an itch in my throat, without compression, simply doing basic false chords, it doesn't hurt or anything like that, it's just literally an itch, a tickle, and I simply cough to relieve it, is this normal at first or am I using the technique wrong?

alright so to re iterate the question that wasn't answered, do you use less or more CONSTRICTION for fry vocals? The question is not about projection lol we (or I) know the difference. The big question here, is do you need to clamp down as hard (ie, constrict more) to make fry vocals work. Because I'm sure this dude has the same issue I do, false chord is super easy, not much constriction. But fry seems to only work when I constrict it so much that it's hard to project properly. When I project I have to loosen up, which stops the distortion. If you watch videos of people screaming through a throat camera, you see that for fry vocals they're almost completely closed up, and constricted in an asymmetrical way. THAT is the tenant of the question, I believe. And man, it was the first time ever in one of these I was like "oh, oh, yes, please tell me, finally!" and then we get hit with projection tips instead haha. I love you and your channel, but c'mon mannn please don't start up the whole "answer the wrong question" thing like so many others do. I love you BECAUSE you are so in depth, but this is one thing I've still never ever seen someone discuss. They always just say "fry distort, then project." But when I project it ALL falls apart. The heel bounce thing helped a bit, but I still can't do fry's at all haha. The science of false chord is pretty straight forward, but no one seems to be able to explain fry screams to me...

One thing I don't see a lot of explanation is how to keep the false chord technique from sounding like Scooby Doo.

How do you know when you're screaming, when you haven't been doing it right, when you have damage or irreversible damage. Is that a thing? Because I know after a night of singing along with Slipknot and Slaughter to Prevail, next day, my voice is gone. Lol

Dear friend, I asked you a question on the stream and said that for 2 years I have been trying to cure hypotonic dysphonia and so far I have not been very successful. Of course there are small successes, but I still can't sing and scream, but I can talk. I have a metal band and I'm the vocalist there. We recorded the entire 1st album with hypotonic dysphonia and it was hell, when I wrote vocals I felt a severe sore throat on the right, in the region of muscles and ligaments and nerves. I have been doing vocals since 2015, but since 2017 I have been screaming so hard and tight. Once I already lost my voice in 2019, but in 6 months I completely recovered. Now I lost my voice in October 2021 at a rehearsal with a group and still have not recovered. A huge number of procedures were done on the throat and voice and a lot of medicines were drunk. Are there any other tips and tricks to quickly heal my dysphonia at the level of muscles, nerves and ligaments? I am 24 years old, my name is Alexander. I am attaching a video for you so that you can understand exactly how I screamed all these years, for complete clarity of the picture. My varch phoniatrist said that this technique kills the voice and I did it in vain. Here is a link to the vocals that I used all these years and at the last rehearsal where I lost my voice ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ypGI0P1Gg2s.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OBMg8s-NaWs.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XlUCgHAG-8c.html I beg you, help me with my question, if there is such an opportunity, I really want to return to vocals, I recorded a lot of covers on RU-vid, I have an audience on my channel, that's all I have in my life, I'm so I really want to return it. and last but not least, you can scream with hypotonic muscular type dysphonia if you do it right, that is, the way you show and teach us for a long time, I have watched all your videos and I know how to use false ligaments and even tried to do it when I have dysphonia but it caused a sore throat. I tried growl like Alex Terrible do from Slaughter to prevail. Growl sounds like this with my vocal damage ru-vid.com-P6drJzePyM ru-vid.comd3QbXqxLmp0

Hi there! As David mentioned in the stream, since this is an instance where you’ve been injured and diagnosed by a doctor to have had vocal damage, he cannot provide any suggestions for you without working with you in a one-on-one scenario. It would not be appropriate for him to try to give you tips for how to improve your situation online. Your situation is specific to you and without him knowing the extensive medical history and being able to hear you in real time, anything that he would suggest could potentially cause more harm than good and that would make us liable for any further injuries that you sustain. We are not willing to put ourselves in that situation and we want what’s best for you too! This will be the stance with any reputable vocal coach. If you are interested in taking lessons with David, feel free to fill out the form on our website: extremevocalinstitute.com/private-lessons. If you don’t opt to work with him we totally understand and we hope that you’re able to find your scream again! - Rilee Co-owner

if I hold my false cord scream for too long I might experience pain in the right part of my ribs, my liver possibly?, I know that the obvious solution would be just to not do it for that long but I'm afraid if I ever do live vocals something could go wrong
