Mr House on eliminating the Brotherhood of Steel (Fallout New Vegas) 

A example on why I like Mr House as a character. Hes a tyrant, but he doesnt hide that from you. He has ambition and he straight up tells you. He wants the brotherhood dead cause house and them wont get along. Its coldhearted but not out of ignorance. Is he a perfect example on what a leader should be? No in fact hes just as dangerous as the BOS the only difference between the two is House made a society and reestablished a bit of the pre war life.

I could listen to Mr. House for days and have. The way he's written and acted by the late Rene Auberjonois, House brings a wealth of information to the player yet never sugar coats his intentions or statements. He's a fantastic character that I'm disappointed isn't talked about more, though it's always nice to see how well known and respected he is in the Fallout fanbase.

Honestly knowing that a Guy like Father Elijah was in charge of the brotherhood not to long ago, Mr. House has a valid point. What would have happen if the NCR didn’t take Helios one from Brotherhood Elijah probably would have started Lighting up the place. The brotherhood hordes to much power into too little people.

Houses words hit harder after completing Veronica’s quest the Bos made me go back to hidden valley and trigger the self destruction on the bunker and trapped everyone inside

"Tell me about the Brotherhood." "They're a terrorist group, basically." Well damn, I wish everybody would put it so bluntly (and accurately) when describing them.

Imagine spending so much time writing a really cool faction as well as dialogue, only to write another character who rips into the beliefs and criticizes them accurately from a different perspective. This is why the writing for New Vegas is so amazing, they have different angles all of which the player character gets to see from a natural and organic way that makes sense to the story. You’re never forced to pick a side either in New Vegas, you get to take time to actually see the perspectives and morales from each faction. There’s no “I’m good guy, go kill bad guy.” Or “I’m bad guy, go kill good guy.” It’s up to the player to decide what they think and why they’re siding with whom they choose. Ultimately tying everything together is the fact there is no concrete good or bad decision, it’s up to the player to think upon their actions and decisions. Now please remove the karma system, I hate being yelled at for being a greedy piece of shit in Dead Money while I have the “Model of Selflessness.” tag. How am I that? I’ve killed so many people for the fun of it and stole so much shit for my own personal gain XD.

Waaay back many years ago I was kind of mad that there was no peaceful resolution with the brotherhood with House. NCR was mad at it, but accepted it at least. But now, much later, having learned a lot more about the brotherhood of steel in general, played fallout 4 and so on, it's a lot clearer to me, not only how it makes perfect sense why house wants them out of the picture, but just in general that the BoS are sickos with a distorted reality. Not beyond redemption, but they're doing well on digging their moral grave

Given the brotherhood of steel's true objectives that at this point may have been unknown such as the atomic annihilation of the wastelands and The ncr's reckless abandon and the use of people as meat for the slaughter, Mr House was absolutely right and it seems given all of the available options for beating the game Mr House being victorious would have led to the best outcome for humanity.

The BoS according to Bethesda: poster boys of the fallout franchise, a brand, the "good guys"™ The Bos according to Interplay/Black Isle and Obsidian: "They're a terrorist group, basically."

What house do is actually logical and something every leader would do, eliminating every opposite party. However in Mojave brotherhood case is actually a serious issue. House don't hate even wipe out the Followers of Apocalypse, even though they're actually the first party that make actual trouble with House and have 2 attempts to sabotage his data. This because the Followers possess no threat and actually want to improve condition of humanity and make the wasteland a better place, in one dialogue house even want to public sell the technology that keep him alive after human technology have advanced in few decades. The Mojave Brotherhood on the other hand, they don't accept public opinion even from their own member, McNamara even literally said he rathr let the Brotherhood dead than acknowledge Veronica's opinion. They literally kill a bunch of doctors because they're afraid Veronica would spill Brotherhood knowledge. Followers follow the ideal of free knowledge, that knowledge belongs to everyone, be it bad or good in hope the humanity will not make same mistake again. Brotherhood are just bunch of Fiends with power armor. In entire New Vegas, only 3 people would kill Followers of Apocalypse and they're by Caesar standard are straight savages. First are the Brotherhood at Veronica companion quest, second are the Courier if he/she went to be evil incarnate and the third are Lanius if he become the new Caesar and according to the original Caesar, he admit when the Courier ask if Lanius is not a Legate but a savage. Every faction want brotherhood dead, even when the Courier manage to convince to spare the Brotherhood, it just delaying their dead sentence because the Brotherhood still have value as tools.

So there is a cut outcome where if you become accepted enough in the BOS, you can convince Mr.House through a very difficult speech check that the BOS will not be a concern. If you pass it, House flat out says that if they act up for even a second, that they will be destroyed. It was technically the only way to spare the BOS under House but it was cut for some reason.

The Brotherhood of Steel are basically the lovable Bullies of the series. They may or may not help you depending on THEIR interests.

I had no guilt in blowing them up. Not after being subjected to the neck bombs. Plus they murdered the people Veronica was going to help.

So say settlers in a town had pre war technology guns and they were using those guns to defend their town from ghouls bandits etc. the brotherhood’s logic would mean that they would have to confiscate those weapons and leave ppl defenseless I’m not saying that every encounter the brotherhood has would’ve been like this but if they are as devoted as they are this is what they would do

BoS at every game Fallout 1: Just kys Fallout 2: Le dead Fallout 3: Buying energy weapons from noobs. Also kind of xenophobic. Fallout NV: They literally put a bomb collar on you and will extortion you into doing task for them or else. Fallout 4: They accept you into their rounds without asking much. I do agree with them, but most people think Maxson looks like an austrian paintor just because he wants to disconnect your local toaster

My only gripe with this is how you don't get dialogue to "walk out" on him. Letting him know this is why you're leaving him. It breaks the immersion. Making such a massive choice silently.

Mr house in this moment convinced me that the BoS I loved from Fo3 were not the same and that they were pretty bad. I could have wiped them out by using the self destruct computer, but I wanted their armor and tech, so I took them all out one by one and made the bunker my own.

A good number of the reasons House describes for killing the Brotherhood of Steel could be decently applied to killing the Courier after they've outlived their usefulness. Food for thought.

I had a real hard time with this order because I had gotten chummy with Veronica and had sympathy for all of the brother hood yet I wanted post apoc humanity in fallout to have a chance to be repaired again- and space age. A choice between a bright future for all or friendship with a handful few

It speaks volumes on how brave the writers of this game were that they willingly made the BoS a niusance to all the other major factions. One of the most iconic symbols of the Fallout franchise, reduced to a sad and pathetic collective that is actively being hunted by all the other factions in the Mojave, with you directly exterminating them in 3 out of 4 possible paths. Compare that to Fallout 3, where the BoS are basically treated like messiahs that can do no wrong, completely stripping them from all the interesting nuance and flaws they had, and Fallout 4's ridiculously over the top evil presentation is even worse. That's the difference between understanding something and just doing thinly disguised fan service.

Ignoring Veronica's weird endings (seriously, even in the ones where she stays with the BoS and you pass the speech check, she STILL has a bad time), if you keep the original Elder in charge rather than his aggressive replacement, he clearly states that he fully understands the doomed future for the Brotherhood if they continue on their current path: limited gene pool, a technology advantage that they're slowly losing to the larger factions, lacking resources, etc. If House wants to convince the BoS to quit the quasi-religious dogma and face reality, this is it. If House wants to turn the BoS from a potential future enemy into a loyal group of engineering contractors (who also just so happen to be armed enough to be able to handle most Wasteland threats 1v1), THIS SI IT. Seriously, it's the one thing about House that surprises me: for a guy who literally had to put himself into a semi-coma for TWO HUNDRED YEARS due to the sheer number of bugs and glitches in his computer software/hardware (as well as having his personal security force be horrifically underarmed due to the lack of a software patch for the past 200 years), he seems to care very little about getting any non-Securitron engineers involved in his "100 years to reconquer the stars" policy plans...

What's curious about his views and NCR's views on the BoS, is that this was ELIJAH'S doing, all the flack the would catch up in the present and infamy was because ELIJAH was a pos leader that ultimately crippled their their chances of success massively due to him looking for constant conflict with everyone.

House is absolutely right here and he became my main reason for destruction of BoS in almost all my playthroughs. In fact he is so right you can see it happening in FO4. BoS strayed off from Maxson's path long time ago. And for me canon ending to FO4 is with them getting kicked by liberty prime. You can in fact see the cracks of BoS falling apart in FO3 even. With the outcasts and how enclave rolled over them with the orbital cannon.

It would be crazy if Mr. House is the canon ending. But he finds the anti aging serum from the common wealth and is able to live again and create a new future from dust and death. (Suddenly Outer Worlds)

What's your opinion on the Mojave chapter of thr Brotherhood of Steel? Are they better off dead or not? In Fallout 3 they can be humanitarian but in Fallout 4 they evolve into the worst extremist faction. Im worried that the same thing will happen here, like even though McNamara agrees to Patrol the supply route in the NCR ending who's to say that they won't end up becoming extremists too like in Fallout 4? Or attempt to usurp Yes Man despite the courier being Idolized in the Yes Man ending because, for example, a civil conflict may arise between those who say OK to Yes Man & NO to Yes man (Like in Fallout 3 with those who left the brotherhood & those who stayed with Lyons) because it IS technology & they should be the one using it not the Courier (Yes, I'm aware that the Courier can become a part of the Brotherhood but let's say that they don't join in this scenario). So.. is House & Caesar right for ending them?

The irony of him acknowledging that even with "shiny power armor" and "ideological purity" that you still lose when you're outnumbered 15:1, and yet he still spent hundreds of thousands of caps for his obsession on the platinum chip all the while both the legion and the ncr built up forces to crush his own.

Reading the comments and offering my two cents: first it's a game, chill out. Two: I'm a hypocrite. Doesn't matter if House is "right about it" it's about taking out potential threats. BoS seek advanced technology and to keep it from anyone else who would use it (meaning only they can use such tech). The lack of foresight on the BoS makes House uneasy, he has many other variables figured out, which goes to show the BoS are somewhat more of a threat to him than anything else. Ultimately, this should not be modded in or changed to accommodate an alliance because honestly, rewriting the game to accommodate not wanting to betray the brotherhood is doesn't make sense. Just play a different main faction if you want.

Honestly this quest only feels plausible when the NCR makes you do it. I could understand Ceaser or Mr. House asking you to do this after they'd secured their other ambitions, but...

I'm reading through all these comments and I still haven't seen a legitimate reason this chapter is bad. How do they hurt or abuse innocent people? They keep destructive tech away from people so it doesn't get abused. Those 4 rogue paladins that can possibly kill those FoA don't even do that on the elders orders so it has nothing to do with the chapter at large. I don't get where people are getting these anti BoS ideas from. FO4 isn't even by the same people so they can't even be referenced here. Can anyone actually explain why a group of people isolating themselves into suicide is a group that absolutely deserves to be annihilated because some beef jerky in a tube says so?

You could follow House's orders and destroy The Hidden Valley Bunker. However, as selfish and xenophobic the Brotherhood may seem, there's innocent people in the bunker such as Melissa Watkins and many other Initiates. Through dialogue, you can ascertain that they're still kids and even if they were to survive the Self-destruct protocol, where would they go ? They are young, inexperienced and naive. In other words, easy prey for the Wasteland. Surrounded by deathclaws on one side and the pass that leads to Helios One being filled with Radscorpions, ( The Missing Laser Pistol unmarked quest proves that they got away by the skin of their teeth) their chances of survival are slim.Even if they surive that too, will they possess the necessary wisdom to keep a low profile and search for a different chapter to join ? So, you could damn part of the next generation in exchange for advancing a tech mogul's old world ideals for total dominance thinly veiled as "peace and prosperity" or you could go back to the Lucky 38 and, along with another snowglobe, give House what was due a long time ago, golf club in hand or not. Decisions, decisions...
