I loved the Mom's dress but every bride deserves to have her OWN dress.

The mum's dress actually looked really good on her even though it's a little dated. But I get wanting to have a dress that's just yours.

I think Monty just pulled a Boss Move! His 'vintage' comment was the perfect thing to say, because it got the point across without being nasty about it (whatever he might've been thinking inside his head!) I find it a little creepy that the mum was so intent on having her daughter wear her old dress at her wedding; it's like she's seeing her daughter as a vicarious extension of herself, rather than her own person who wants the experience of picking out her dream dress for herself.

I think when the Mom saw the daughter in her vintage wedding dress, she was taken back to her own wedding with all the emotions and joy she had 28 years ago. It was very loving of the daughter to try it on and give her that memory. I love the dress that the bride finally chose.

My family has a very special veil. It was originally my great aunt's, then my mom, my aunt, and my sister wore it. If I ever get married, I will wear it. My great aunt was an incredible woman who never had any children of her own, but treated all of us like her daughters and made an impact that I can't even begin to explain. It'll be an honor to wear the veil when my time comes.

As soon as they showed Mom’s dress, I knew it’s vintage because I had friends get married in that same time period. The bridesmaid dresses we wore had similar vibes. I wouldn’t wear any of them now and pretend they were “timeless” either. We just celebrated 29 years and I wouldn’t ever expect my daughter or anyone’s daughter to choose the style of dress I made and wore for our wedding because it’s definitely dated. It was stylish and pretty at the time, but definitely not “timeless”, and Mom’s dress wasn’t timeless either. Mine is definitely a product of the early 90s and Mom’s was definitely mid-80s. I’m glad she finally let go of her bridal fantasy and let her daughter create her own.

My mom got married in 1954. I got married in 1982. I would have worn her dress, but she cut it to cocktail length to wear to a party. I loved her gown. It was a full on tulle ball gown with a sweetheart neck and cap sleeves. 🎉🎉

mom's dress really isn't bad for that era but it just didn't gel with the bride. she very much looked like she was wearing someone else's dress. she really picked a gorgeous dress though, the shape was perfect, the amount of lace was perfect, even the bling at the waist was perfect!

Outside of the shop, bride needs to have a heart to heart with her mom. Let mom express why this is so important to her, and really listen. Because I think that dress is a symbol for her, of all the love and happiness and commitment she's experienced, and wishes for YOU. Talking it out may help her separate the feelings from the garment. Because her and your dad's example everyday is what has taught you what marriage can be, and you thank her for that ❤.

Mom's dress was lovely, but her nostalgia glasses had her hoping her daughter would have the same emotions attached to it as her. I like what my friend did, she took her mom's dress to a bridal tailor and used parts of it for a new dress. Iirc, she kept the skirt and had the bodice remade. We also went shopping for some new lace fabric to fill in some areas, and came up with pretty swag off the shoulder sleeves. It was such a fun experience and in the end she looked so beautiful in HER dress!

I know someone whose overbearing parents, because they were paying for the wedding, forced their daughter to wear her mother's dress from the early 50s. She was so unhappy, and midway through the morning her veil started deteriorating because it was old and had been stored incorrectly. If you're going to wear a vintage dress because YOU want to and its lovely/meaningful to YOU, still make sure that you check it and have it correctly laundered as far ahead of the wedding as when you'd be dress shopping.

I also tried on my mothers wedding dress and I loved it. but together we decided to go with something else, since the dress was so delict that we where afraid that it was going to break. I am happy with what I ended up with. but wearing my mothers dress was a special moment for me.

Honestly, her mother’s dress is really nice and isn’t insanely dated like many wedding dresses from that era. My Mum got married around the same time and huge leg-o-mutton sleeves. However good it might look though, it has to be what the bride wants.

I absolutely loved ,loved my mom's wedding dress, tried it on here in Orlando, Florida has the AC blasting ceiling fans going ,My entire family was there.The gown was Stunning, it had mellowed to an antique white satin.But with the long sleeves w fingertip loop ,the scalloped neckline & massive cathedral train .I'd have passed out for a mid July wedding. The only way to wear mom's gown was to plan a wedding back in our home town ,but that wasn't going to be doable. So I took off shopping 1 day before my shift (RN) found a dress ,my 3 coworkers saw it last fitting tears & laughter, champagne such a blast !! Mom got to see it when she helped me get dressed for my formal wedding pictures. Naturally we had the bubbly stuff & snacks ,it was so special will always remember her face the tears & joy ,she said your Daddy is going to be a mess when he sees you sissy ♡♡♡♡♡

Classic gown. I'd have been pleased to have the chance to even try on my Mother's 1969 gown, but sadly it had red wine spilt down it the reception and it was not salvaged. That said, when I married in 1998, I was happy to choose my own gown ( and I got a pure silk dress for £125.00 at a sample sale-so it was obviously meant to be. But this issue is clearly very emotive. I wonder if one solution is to offer to wear the family gown for first dances-in particular if Dad from that wedding is dancing. A sweet gesture, limited risk of damage to a special item at that stage in the proceedings and a classic, romantic moment.

I made over an 80’s dress for a friend’s daughter to wear at her rehearsal dinner. Took off the big poufy sleeves, lowered high neckline and shortened the dress with a high low hemline. It was a way to wear her mom’s dress and have her own for the big day.
