December 4th Netflix released Selena: The Series Part 1 and well it was rather lackluster and other versions have been WAY better. There’s Selena (1997) and the controversial El Secreto de Selena (the TV series). So watch them all if you have the time and decide for yourself!

I totally agree with you. She looked nothing like a teenager. You could see the age in her face. The wigs looked like a tyler perry production. She had no stage presence. And there was too much wasted time. We got to know more about their struggle but less about her as a person. And before people keep saying it's the movie that made people think it's bad, they need to keep in mind it's 2020 youtube exists now and there is so much actual footage of her in here and ways to learn about her to know that this actress didn't capture her at all. She couldn't even dance and the lip synch was off. Also, what was up with the full house music and the problem solving before the end of each episode. It's cheesy. Lastly, they did Chris wrong because they put on an awful wig on the guy...not to mention no chemistry between the two people. I said all this to say I agree with you 💯

That’s what I felt from watching that show, she was a tertiary character in her own series. We know more about AB and Suzette that Selena ... it’s like she’s in the background.

It made no sense. She was a background character and I still don't understand why.

It felt like we are suckered into watching The Quintanillas featuring Selena instead. It's a misleading poster. It's like the father, and the brother badly seeking acknowledgement and credit for their efforts, using this show, that wasn't in the movie version. No surprise, they exec produced it. Almost felt like a deliberate casting choice so that Selena takes a backseat to her family.

You nailed it on every spectrum, I’m glad I’m not a reviewer, it was so cringe worthy horrific, I turned it off.. Acting was bad, they rushed through everything we already knew, they never went in dep on anything.. TOTAL MEH! And Aberham was NOT A GOOD MAN! He was very very very strict with his kids! Not Danny Tanner! Huge flop

At first, I thought the script was ok and the set choices, the set up of props, were the problem. A day later, I realized the script was bad, the set were ok, and there was a POOR attention to details! The script: they would start to share a memories, internally you begin to anticipate a better understanding of the family's dynamics and the memory would end! Just the cast of characters, the audience feel No kind of connection with the characters, and/or the scenes!!! Example: 1) Food Stamps: the family getting government assistance. The patent have a moment outside the welfare office, when mom and dad have a quick heart to heart. Then it cut to the father in the store with the two older children and uses the mom's words on the two kids, the he just leaves them to pay. Really?!? The next scene should have depicted how truly humiliating it use to be to pay with food stamp. (It was done with a gov debt card. It was paper monopoly like money that came stapled in these booklets. One had to tear them out of those booklets, in front of the cashier, because cashiers were not allowed to accept food stamps unless they were still in their booklet. Then cashier would count them out while displaying them across the counter, in order to make it clear how much one gave him/her. Then they would get flipped faced down and the The cashier would rubber stamp each one. This was done to ensure the food stamps weren't wouldn't be reused.) But they didn't. They have the dad tell them to pay and running away. 2) School: The the whole school thing. Oh, where to start. •A girl invites her to friends across america and her dad says no. But why is this scene in the series? Were they close friends? Was this his topical answer from her father about going out? What makes it important? • Parent-Teacher meeting: The meeting should have been in a principal's office. The series says the issue is attendance. That would be a concern ALL the teachers. But for some reason the meeting is in some teacher's classroom. Which by the way, what subject did she teach? The props were a HOT MESS. Not only was there an item for every subject present, but ALL the props were for a THIRD GRADE class. In high school, only one classroom would have all school subject represented around a classroom and that would be the special education classroom. • We see the father and the teacher clash but get no insight whether she finished high school, did she get a GED? Why tell us about a plot twist if no information is give on how the issue was resolved? What was the family's stance on education? What I mean is, it helps us get a better understanding of the family. They needed to decide either they clearly shared their story or don't complain when people begin to make assumptions about the family. For instance, if the siblings finished high school, then I would think the father would want her to do the same. BUT WE DONT KNOW!!!! Why even bring up her high school problems if we don't get to find out what happened, how did her siblings feel about? Were they in college? Where her siblings in favor of against her finishing high school? WE GOT LEFT ON RED!!!!! One more, thing that drove me crazy!!!! The Dwellings: Again, we find out that the family had to move for financial reasons. We never see how the families make it work. We don't know if they moved in with an older couple, or some cousins, do they have kids? There should have been either interactions between the families or some passive-agressive avoidance going on. Instead we get NOTHING. Garage: The takes the to see a garage for them to live in. Who offered the garage? No lie, latinos will live in a garage but would have been cleaned out, drywalled and furnished. Texas is extremely hot and can crazy cold. Are we really to believe, he took them to see it and it wasn't at least, clean out? Next there is a scene where the WHOLE FAMILY is in one room. VERY COMMON in our culture, but who's house is it? Who gave up their room? How long did this go on for?. Also, why were kids on the bare (no sheet or cushion) carpet like dogs? The dressers have NO handles. You mean to tell me, the father could build scaffolding lights for a show but not put the handle or a piece of rope as handles. Really? With whom do they live? There is no background given and without it, it's difficult to care or have any empathy for any of them. After seeing your video, I am starting to wonder why the family even bothered making this mini series, if they didn't feel comfortable sharing? I need answers please! I could say sooooo much more but I don't want to give this series more passion than this series creators did.

I absolutely love your review! I slept through a few scenes it was poorly written. Just compare it to Stranger Things or The Crown those shows are entertaining greatly written! I don't understand why Selena wasn't to that level?why was it low budget? Besides that the way that family treats Chris is disgusting! The show should've shown their true greedy colors but of course Abraham will never allow that. Her name is Selena Quintanilla-Perez no matter how hard they try to erase Perez!!

I'm 32 from corpus and as a fan since I was about 7 I can say that this show was way more accurate than the movie. The reason its so boring to everyone is because everyone is used to the glamorized story that hollywood produced. This is more the struggle it took to get to where she was.. and honestly it didn't matter who played her the only person anyone's gonna accept as her is jlo..

That's fair if it's more accurate but that doesn't mean that the production, casting, acting & script can't be better. For such an internationally celebrated musician, Selena deserved better than this mess.

Okay, I am a big Christian Serratos fan and as an actress, I thought she was great in this. All that aside though, I actually did enjoy the series. They literally said that the movie was all about Selena and her fame, so this series was based on her upbringing, her family and their struggles. Maybe the title, "Selena: The Series" was slightly misleading and should've been like "The Quintanillas" or something, but it was still always advertised as Selena's past and family. I also don't understand the comments people make about Selena not being the main character? She definitely is the main character in my eyes. Even if she isn't on screen 24/7 (even though she is literally in every other scene), she is ALWAYS the topic of conversation. Also, Suzette (Selena's Sister) literally cast the production herself. She cast everyone who portrayed her family perfectly, so I think its unfair that people are saying "she's NOTHING like Selena", when Selena's own sister casted her because HOW MUCH she is like her? Like how can you argue that. I did feel some episodes were a bit slow at times, but it was still an interesting plot. Maybe 6/7 episodes could've sufficed, instead of 9. I do however, feel this project was more targeted at Selena fans to gain some backstory and why certain decisions were made, leading up to her fame and just to listen to her music. It wasn't some huge-budget, shocking, action-packed drama series to make us fall of our seats. It was a targeted real life documentary, based on real life events. It was meant to be more heart warming and feel-good, rather than dramatic, crazy and intense. I love how season 1 ended though. Seeing Yolanda and the joyful family dynamic starting to break. There has been so much happiness and positivity throughout the first season, that by the looks of things, season 2 is going to be really good. I feel like majority of the critiques, (not you specifically) are comparing it too much to the movie. It's, its own stand-alone project, based on completely different events. The wigs is a completely understandable critique, some of them looked terrible & I am confused why Netflix didn't do a better job at that. However, looking past that, I actually really enjoyed the series. I thought the casting was really good, the acting was great for the most part and the writing was decent. I will be watching season 2.

Thank you for this comment. I love seeing another perspective of the series. I agree it should have been called "The Quintanillas". I enjoyed Christian Serratos and it's not her fault that the series didn't focus on her as much as I would like. So many people love Selena and I think because the story didn't focus on her it was hard to connect/appreciate it.

Your commentary was dead on , not just visually was it a mess . The acting was piss poor . The writing was so surface level , and Christian serratos is a decent actress I’ve only seen her in TWD and she’s ok in that nothing amazing but I did not believe her as Selena for even one second no personality no smiley, bubbly huge personality like Selena had ! I only got through about 5 episodes because it was that bad

the quality of the show was terrible, very cheap looking to the point it broke my immersion. They made too many budget cuts, those wigs says it all. Lol why did they have to give the teacher a wig herself? In the 80s it was common for black women to go natural or perm it up lol ok? Maybe they ran out of $$$ thats why they did the show and didnt wana split it with Chris.
