New Porsche 911 GTS review | Could it be better than a turbo? How about a GT3? | Autocar

This is the new 2022 model year Porsche 911 GTS, tested both on a road and at a race track.
You can have a GTS as a coupe, cabriolet or with Targa body style. It can be had in two or four wheel drive and with either a seven-speed manual or an eight-speed PDK automatic gearbox.
The new GTS has more power than a regular Carrera S, with its 3.0-litre flat six turbocharged engine making 473bhp, up by 30bhp over a Carrera S.
But it's in the suspension department where the GTS gets the most attention. Its ride height is dropped by 10mm over a Carrera S and it has Turbo-style wheels, brakes and suspension.
Exterior identifying features are largely limited to black badges and wheels and 'dark chrome' styling elements. Inside there's lots of suede-like upholstery and new decor, but also the option of a Lightweight package that cuts 25kg from the GTS's kerbweight.
This all sounds quite compelling. So join Autocar's Road Test Editor Matt Saunders as he tests a Cabriolet on the road and a Coupe on track.

I've just taken delivery of my 992 GTS and find it hard to imagine anything appreciably better...it's such a sorted brilliant machine !!

Younger me would be all about 911 Turbos and GT3's but older me has learned to love the smooth lines of the Carrera models. GTS would be perfect for me for back road drives

Ehhh, while I low this look as well, I think anyone would be better off getting a last gen or 997 gts instead of a 992 one. That way you get the flat six naturally aspirated and to me, if one can afford it, I think it's the only engine you should consider lol

Only down side: its the only GTS model with the Carrera S chassis, not the one from Turbo model, which fits this GTS in perfect way.

I'm sure you've made the right choice. That's exactly what I would have chosen, and I think a lot of others too. We hear this over and over again - for those who are listening - that the best car is the rear-drive coupe with a manual gearbox. It's common sense, and also the 'purists' view of what makes a great sports car. Minimum weight, maximum driver involvement. There are some other decisions to be made, like whether to go for the special lightweight carbon-ceramic brakes, but as long as you've covered the most important bases, then you're all good. I wish you many happy and safe miles.

Interesting comment about the Turbo S being less comfortable. I had a 991.2 GTS then last year swapped it for a 991.2 Turbo S. The turbo is more comfortable, seats have more padding (I had numb bum after 3hrs in my GTS), and suspension is softer in normal modes. The Turbo S is more of a GT but a complete animal when ‘on it’. The GTS was the best all rounder (I’ve had 997.2 GT3 too). I have briefly driven a 992 Turbo S and it felt sharper, less grand tourer and more like a GTS with a sprinkle of GT3 so I guess the 992 gen cars have been shuffled somewhat in their setups.

Most of the press car turbo S have SPASM, which makes the car firmer. I've driven a cabrio without it, and it's plenty comfy.

They might do that at some point like the Cayman and Boxster, you gain more noise and character but then trade a bit on the mid range, it depends where Porsche want to position it of course.

Agree. It's a lot cheaper than the turbo and I am sure with an aftermarket remap could be 8-% of a turbo for 60% of the price.

The Carerra 4 GTS could be a good all round track day/tarmac rally car with all the performance options, aero kit, carbon bucket seats + full roll cage, extinguisher etc from the Porsche Motorsport Division...4WD, twin-turbo and decent aero. Then to take it to the next level, i'd get DeMan Motorsport to bore/stroke the engine to 4.0 litres, add German competition suspension, a titanium sports exhaust and stickier tyres.

Great review! Matt mentioned “the narrower body of the Carrera” - I thought all 992 bodies were the same width. Even the first gen GT3 started out as a parts-bin special, then Andreas got a hold of the product line and the rest is history. Seems like the GTS is going the same way - started out as a parts-bin special, to up-sell the last of the 997’s, with what was essentially a bucket load of tasty options, heavily discounted.

Historically Porsche does two things - software, enforced by hardware. The 991 had a flow ported and polished heads, different cams, different pistons, different plenum. The changes here I don’t know off hand, but I guarantee it’s not just ECU changes, and there’s hardware to hit those numbers.

I'm sure most people would. BUT a GT3 is less practical and less refined (important if used as a daily), a lot more money, slower unless thrashed (remember that 3.0tt unit is properly torquey) and the real kicker is most of us mere mortals can't get on the list for a GT3

I LOVE this car. Obviously, he's not a "porsche" type of guy. GTS is the "sweetspot" & the body is the same now carrera v carrera4 (width wise).

camirocz they were cool when they first came out now everyone has dct or some crazy fast paddle engaged transmission, I much rather row my own gears then have a slightly faster lap time from a transmission, plus you can optimize any car for the track now days so that cancels out the benefit of a dct for me

Shame no one can get their hands on any sort of 911 currently. If you walked in to your local dealer with a pocket full of cash and asked for a new GTS, you wouldn’t be in it for 24 months 😡

Believe it or not, I called around and found a small dealer with 1 allocation for a cabriolet. I had to agree to a 5k market adjustment, but other dealers were quoting me 30-50k over msrp so I could stomach that. Car will be here in March 😎

I really prefer the old shape 911 from 83-91....very unique and agressive however the new is fantastic modern car, nothing to compare....but the old style is something special for many

No. They always roll out the GTS after the base and S. Usually the base and S are first, then Turbo, then GT3 then GTS.

You're wrong about being able to build a GTS in the past by chosing the right options on an S. With the 991 Porsche offered four ways to buy a wide body, two-wheel drive naturally aspirated 911: the GTS, 911R, GT3, and GT3 RS. There were only two ways to buy a wide body, two-wheel drive, naturally aspirated 997: the GTS and GT3 RS.

I had a 991 GTS and it was a snooze fest. Just not raw enough for me. The 992 GTS might fit the bill, but I’m holding out for a GT3 while I enjoy my GT4.

Yes, the 911 GTS was a big deal from 997.2 on. Not according to what this reviewer stated. Just go back and look at the 911 reviews from when the 997 GTS came out. This guy cannot even get the details right.. not 2009 or 2010, but 2011 and you'd think you would prepare for a video segment.

the center lock wheels are a right pita - and Alcantara is nasty .... the chassis is 'a little hard to judge on the road' - congratulations - that's the most ridiculous comment I've heard in a road car review...

The rear of the body is way too tall. The driver can't possibly see much to the back. I can't stand black wheels either, so this is an unappealing Porsche to me.

Usual bollocks about manual gearbox being ‘dynamically optimised’…….yawn. I gave a 992 GTS with PDK and it’s stunning. Please show me how a manual is any better! Absolute nonsense all round. Yes, it’s the premier 911 but why spout such tosh?!

130k with the right options. 992 is now too big and frumpy. Save yourself 40k and get a 991.2. Lighter, just as fast and better looking.

This is automotive journalism? Sounds like marketing diarrhea mixed with reading from a spec sheet... "this GTS isn't as harsh as a GT3" thanks for the incredible insight Sherlock! Where is Steve Sutcliffe when you need him?
