Oscar Ernest Lance, 35, and his younger brother, 21-year-old Jacob Lance, pleaded guilty to charges of manslaughter, arson and burglary connected to the November 2015 death of Todd Cantlay near Pendleton.
Before the fatal beating, Cantlay had called and texted Jacob Lance about Cantlay's son paying too much for drugs and being "shorted," according to a statement from the solicitor's office.
Cantlay's son, who was in his late teens at the time, had apparently bought marijuana from one of the Lance brothers, according to 2015 testimony from Nathan Mitchell, an investigator at the Anderson County Sheriff's Office.
Cantlay was killed in his century-old farm house a few miles east of Pendleton. Before being purchased by Cantlay, the McAlister House was briefly used as a wedding venue.
After Cantlay died of the blows he suffered during the beating, the Lance brothers burned his body and then stole guitars, an Xbox, a television and a rifle from Cantlay's home before driving off in his car. The brothers attempted to burn the vehicle before deputies found it in a field in Starr, according to investigators.
Items taken from Cantlay's home were found in Jacob Lance's vehicle and in Oscar Lance's home, according to the solicitor's office.

How exactly? Should they provide flash cards and a slide show presentation? It’s two sentences, seven words each. They even explained about how to get a public defender, how he might get bond with the circuit judge, and how to make a phone call, which most LE will just say you’re on your own with that.

"Can I get a public defender down here" isn't necessarily asking to have one. It can be understood to be asking if you can have one if you want to. The cop could have answered this question in a better way, though. Suspects should just state that they want an attorney to represent them, not ask a question about it. A lot of suspects ask the cops whether they need an attorney, I've noticed.

OL Oscar gave his best shot here. As far as holding on tight and not being over emotional, it was a very slick move by slippin in "i was in the victims house once before to give an estimate for a fireplace repIr" Lol attempting to explain away any possible dna or anything regarding being their once. Ultimately it didnt work but out of the 100's maybe 1,000's of interrogations ive viewed its not often someone has the wherewithal to slip that in slick like.

He got kicked out of the army, has no driver’s license he had that taken away, he lives with his mother. His brother said that he broke a lighter threw fluid on the man & set him on fire. Wow. I wonder who pulled the trigger 🤔 I think this brother -Ernie is it? Oscar? I think he did. He was pretty convincing during the first half. I think even the detectives partially believed him. I don’t like this guy, he’s super manipulative the fake crying and the way he insults the coffee and asking for extra stuff.. talking to himself knowing they’re listening to him. Yuck The craziest part of this whole story is, both the brothers think they’re going to Jail for a couple years and don’t realize the magnitude of what they’ve done to this man’s life and family and the magnitude of what they’ve done to their own lives. “I’ll miss 78 Saturdays with my daughter.” Like bro… you’ll be lucky if you ever see her again through glass. I’m looking forward to finding out the outcome.

Ty 2:26:26 I bought everything this dude was selling. He had me convinced. He had an answer for everything, and he sounded solid to me. He had his facts down; had his witnesses- complete with phone #s. Even had bowling score, and who would admit rollin’ such shitty scores if it wasn’t true?! I believed him. He was what- 35 yrs old at the time- and has probably been a manipulating , smooth talking, sorry ass lying miscreant for most if his life. He is really good. So in my mind, he went from shocked that his brother was being accused of robbing a dude that had been threatening his litle bro - then found out Bro jacob had thrown his ass under the bus, all the while denying any involvement, knowing full well that the victim’s property was right there in his own house... so stupid for someone that seems really smart. He is undeniably articulate. So from strong, smooth liar, holding the line- to a crying like a girl punk- admitting to involvement, but only this much... still saying several times “sorry i lied. This is the truth”; and repeatedly saying “i’m not gonna lie, im being honest with you”... such a worthless claim considering the last hour of solid lies. So crying like a girl- to squealing like a rat on his beloved brother who he was covering for by lying, because he didnt want the little big man go to prison; then putting it ALL off on jacob- how he tried to stop him,....all worthless shit... as if he wasn’t 15 yrs older than Jacob, and been leading him down a path for many, many years. So off they both go to prison for a 30 yr sentence... Still, i want some popcorn and more of this case! I could listen to this guy lie all dang day! He has a great voice, is an awesome and believable liar (until proven guilty...dammitt!!!) and aside from this little slip- living a respectable life... nevermind deadbeat dad status... anyway, yep, i’ll take another ticket to the show, and I’ve got coupons so i can buy some more bullshit after this video is over. It Is What It Is. disgustingly alluring. He’s putting it down, and I m picking it up. Really sorry they behaved like scum of the earth, and killed this Man. Is there an optional ending? I liked the way this guy was turning out to be, until he turned out to be just that! A lying , lowlife murderer that took his brothers future from him, too, to be a cool hero badass type to his little bro. He is a punk, and that is not how brotherly love plays out. Friggin’ loser. So anyway... another ticket for one... same show.... and everyone please be quiet. Forget it. I need to go take a cold shower. This guy bothers me. 🤪 I’ve got a couple of lies i’d like to tell HIM. Starting with 🎵’this will only hurt for a little while”... the truth for me, as regards this dude, is that he would have to seriously bring his ‘A’ Game, because he thinks he’s pretty macho , but for Him to be Man enough for me... he would have to toughen up to where he was at least tough enough to “take it like a Woman “... which he is not!

@@_HimToo What would be the point of defending himself against that proof if not to "prove his innocence"? If he wasn't such an idiot he would have just shut-up and asked for a lawyer, but in this case the evidence against him was so overwhelming I doubt even the best lawyer in the world could have saved his dumb ass.

No one is asking them to be legal advocates. But they're expected to let people know their rights, period. They undercut it but downplaying it as much as possible. Preaching it with thongs like, "this is just a technicality" or "we have to read these to everyone who comes in this room" or "we gotta get this outta the way real quick & then we can blah blah blah". Just as they don't needa advocate for a suspect, they also don't need to use their interrogation head-games in an effort to make people waive their rights, which is exactly what they seem to do in the vast majority of interrogations that I've seen!

I think we get a good look into the suspect's ability to both manipulate and dominate the conversation when, he brings up his brother's perception of him. He even goes on to question his interrogators as to whether his brother said similarly positive things about him. Of course he knows his brother did not do this. Furthermore he knows the likelihood that his brother actually did fold on him is high. he's doing some perception management here as well. Like, I'm the older brother you know, I know better.
