It’s only a hunch but I get the slight feeling that Phelous doesn’t really like Disney’s live-action Pinocchio. Lol

Honestly, as far as Goodtimes goes, this is one of the ones with some actually clever nods to the original story. Still absolutely shows its cheapness, etc, but there's more to it than a lot of their adaptations/cash-ins.

7:27 In relation of Jiminy Cricket, I actually really like how the Del Toro version of Pinocchio actually works around Jiminy's purpose of being his conscious to an extent. His own home in the tree happened to be chopped down by Gepetto into making PInocchio, so in a way he's tied to it all and serves a purpose into how they eventually interact.

It's interesting that this Geppetto looks a lot like Dr. Wily. Perhaps this means Pinocchio is a Mega Man character.

What I kept hearing every time Drew Carey kept saying “Blue Fairy” was Clefairy. I was then imagining one popping up and then using Metronome to shoot out a giant laser to blast Drew away as punishment for constantly calling for it.

This video does a pretty good job of reinforcing just how GREAT the stop-motion Guillermo del Toro version of Pinocchio is, despite not even mentioning it once.

The way they designed Geppetto almost looks like a friendly version of Dr. Wily from Mega Man.

I'd imagine this was to coincide with the 1992 re-release of Disney's Pinocchio which I actually remember watching in theaters.

As someone who hasn't read the story or even seen the Disney version, it's fun to learn about all the differences between the various versions of Pinocchio.

If there's one positive about Disney's live action remakes it's that it's made a lot of people go back to the originals and appreciate them all over again. Even some of the weaker ones were still way better than the new soulless shit. And if there's one great thing about Goodtimes, it's that it leads to us all having a good time with these Phelous reviews. It'll be a sad day when you run out of those to review.

Between this and the Disney live action remake I'm really starting to appreciate the Guillermo Del Toro version more and more

I actually had this on video tape as child. It was actually the version I loved as a child, but only cuz I hadn't seen the Disney one at that age.

I remember Saban Pinocchio Series which at some point included vampire episode and a storyline of Gepetto being charged for witchcraft and sent to Skull Island. Anyway, they also changed Fox and Cat into Fox and Weasel for some reason.

Goodtimes may not be the version children love but it’s certainly the version Phelous fans love

22:09 Actually, the Steve Barron adaptation, The Adventures of Pinocchio, did follow up on the Candlewick story (or Lampwick as he was renamed in that version). At the end of the movie, he and the other boys are shown to have turned back into boys offscreen. With Jimini Cricket (named Pepe in this version) narrating off handedly that all the other boys also turned back into boys. It was a very "Oh and by the way, this happened" type of moment.

Geppetto in this looks more like Dr. Wily, so does this mean Pinocchio is a Robot Master instead of a puppet?

Well, the Judge Gorilla part was meant to be a satire about the Italian justice system (which unfortunately is still relevant today)

Gepetto in the Disney adaptation (not the remake) has same kind of goofy energy as Old Man. I mean the dude needs like 45 coo-coo clocks and a pocket watch to know what time it is and he forces his cat to open windows for him. So yeah Gepetto is the Disney version of Old man!

Tom Hanks calling out for Pinocchio and Drew Carey shouting for the Blue Fairy make me laugh every single time.

Great review, Phelous! You know, it never ceases to amaze me just how DARK the original stories of Disney films really go. Sure, their films are dark at times, but the original stories go to depths you couldn't even fathom as a child. Also, Gepetto and Pinocchio got all wet when they went in the ocean. You know what THAT means!

It's weird to think that the Goodtimes and Dingo Pictures versions of these classic stories are often more true to the source material than the more well-known Disney stuff.

I swear, almost every voice Cam Clarke provides in these Goodtimes films all have the faintest tint of 87' Leonardo in them when you listen close enough. It's like the uncanny valley of voice acting where they sound like different voices but you can barely here 87' Leonardo poking through.

I'm surprised you left out the part where (Goodtimes) Pinocchio finds the Fox and the Cat riding in a prison stagecoach and interacts with them for the last time. It's probably the most souless and uninspired cash-in movie about Pinocchio i have seen in a while, But enough about the Disney remake, let's watch the review, The Goodtimes cash-in is bound to be far more interesting

I think that was Frank Welker voicing the Ringmaster. It sounded a little bit like Thaddeus Plotz from Animaniacs, another role Frank Welker played.

We should expect nothing LESS than a DEMON from a block of wood brought to life by a fairy;) I love that this one's animation looks like the second season of the Problem Child cartoon and Pinocchio totally reminds me of Bobby from Bobby's World:):) The regular AND anthropomorphic animals reminds me of the Tom and Jerry Willy Wonka crossover--"Wait, that dog was on a leash! If dogs can hold down jobs, own homes, and get arrested, why do they still need to be on leashes?!" The Pleasure Island sequence in 'Geppetto' was pretty awesome thanks to Usher as The Ringmaster--he had a great catchy song:):) That's one of the live-action adaptations that MUST be covered along with the ton of 80s fairy tale ones once all of the cartoons have been exhausted;)

I immediately thought Dr. Wily the moment I saw their Gepetto. 3 seconds, that has to be a new record for me.

I liked the Disney movie as a kid so I read the book and thought it was awesome, especially the part where the cricket got murdered since the kid me imagined it being the Disney one.

Seeing the cricket first be introduced on the hearth and call himself the "cricket of the house" who keeps things in order has convinced me that this is an ancestor of Cricket Crockett. After hearing about all the shit his great great grandcricket had to put up with, Crockett decided empathy was overrated and turned to a life of evil and luck-stealing. Good job, Pinocchio.

I love that you mention all the original tale's dark moments. I still hope we get an adaptation that stays more faithful and shows those. Not even Del Toro's did it. Btw, ever read Buratino? It is basically the russian version of Pinocchio, with so many changes it becomes a whole new story. That one has animated versions too. Some translated to english as well!

Mondo TVs “Welcome back Pinocchio” is the best worst adaptation. All I can say is the blue fairy turns a man into a giant stick of Butter! it’s also a Christmas movie for some reason.

Hot take: I’d rather watch this than the 2022 live action remake of Pinocchio. Plus, you’ve got to give credit to Golden Films for actually not having relooped animation for once with Pinocchio like they have with their other Disney mockbusters.

Soon as I saw the thumbnail and the fact that Gepetto was pretty much Dr. Wily, except he uses wood instead of metal, I was anticipating some pretty fun stuff. At least I got a helluva dose of Cam Clarke. Wow, the original version of the story coming out weekly, a la the Dragonball manga a century later, is something I never knew. Always grateful to have you diving into the backstory of these tales, and this made me realize this is somehow the first Pinocchio you've ever covered. I could've sworn you'd touched every fairy tale by now! ^^' You make a great point about Pinocchio just sliding into school however many weeks into the season despite being a puppet born only a few days ago. That's just setting up to fail on so many levels.

This was a wonderful roundabout way of dunking on the live-action movie without giving it more attention than it deserves.

Gotta love it when Phelous talks about how messed up the original versions of classic children's fairy tales were & points out parts that were kept in & parts that were omitted! Still, it is interesting to see an adaptation that is trying to cash in on the Disney version (the animated ones, not the lazy live action with CGI remakes, which can never compare to the classics! Heck, I'd say Goodtimes' version is superior to Disney's literally $hit sniffing CGI Pinocchio with Live-action, as at least it tries to do its own thing rather than just completely rip off the animated Disney classic)! Heck, I'd say Dingo Pictures could probably make a more interesting Pinocchio than Disney's live-action with CGI remakes, which are basically the equivalent of a SNAKE (Disney) eating its own tail, which probably explains Pinocchio sniffing horse $hit (even though it would have been more ironically dark if it had been Donkey $hit, but that's cause modern Disney doesn't have the B@LLz to have Lampwick & Pinocchio drink beer cause they fail to realize that them drinking beer & smoking in the original was being framed as a bad thing, with them being turned into literal jack@$$ being a karmic punishment, so basically the moral is kids shouldn't drink beer & smoke as those behaviors can result in bad things happening to them! Sure, the donkey scene is terrifying, but its meant to be to drive home the message that the things they were doing were bad & could lead them down a dark path, which the donkey transformation represents, which in reality it could be anything from leading children to becoming alcoholism or having health problems from underage drinking and/or smoking, or being taken advantage of in ways far too dark for a film aimed at families & children)! Sure, some aspects of the original tales may need to be omitted cause they are simply wrong (for example, two early versions of Sleeping Beauty literally feature a prince in one version, a married king in another, essentially date r*pe the princess while she sleeps with both versions having her become pregnant & giving birth while asleep, with Sleeping Beauty in both versions ending up married to the father of said children (people who think the whole awakened by true loves kiss is bad because of dubious consent, don't realize how dark early versions can get and that by comparison, at least True Love's kiss can at least be seen as romantic (& I think Snow White & Sleeping Beauty would probably accept a simple kiss to free themselves of an enchantment & even the Disney versions had both Princess know their Prince before the true love's kiss even happened, heck Disney's Sleeping Beauty had the Prince slay a Dragon to save the woman he loved)!

Wait in modern version of Pinocchio they censored the morality tale of "smoking and alcohol are bad for you"? WHY, this makes no sense, the entire point was to show kids that drinking and nicotine are bad for them (kids rarely go for heavy drinks so "beer alcoholism" is an actual epidemic in many countries, that's why sweet low-alcoholic drinks like Jaguar and Rom-Coke are an issue, kids who would wince on whiskey can easily drink it - using this logic many states i.e. EU started banning flavored cigarettes - if you can't take the real thing you have no business trying).

Man, even by early Goodtimes standards, the animation in this one seemed pitiful. Also, if you ever have the time, I definitely recommend checking out the webcomic adaptation of Pinocchio that KC Green did. It's very faithful to the text, and a lot of the story's weirdness plays out really well with KC's offbeat humor and art. XD

I never thought i would say that the goodtime version isn't worse than other versions because they're are just so many different Pinocchio movies out there. 🤣

Yikes, another not so good time with "Goodtimes". I will say, as bad as this movie was, they at least portrayed "Pinocchio" as naïve, selfish, and bratty before learning to better himself at the end and earning his humanity like in the book, and not being aware of what's right and wrong and trying to be a good boy like in the 2022 Disney Remake.

With Phelous repeatedly showing off that shot of Pinocchio sniffing the shit, I'm beginning to think that Del Toro saw that scene and came away with the idea of having his Pinocchio sing about Benito Mussolini being a piece of shit.

Now I hope he does "Pinocchio and The Emperor of The Night". Fingers crossed!
