Pippin lovebird meets his 2 week old siblings for the 1st time and tries to feed one! - 4-8-10

This is video of my 8 month-old baby Peach Faced lovebird, Pippin (from my adult pair's first clutch) meeting his 2 week-old siblings. Pippin was SO excited to meet his new family members and did not know whether to preen or try to feed them. We watched him carefully as we were not sure how he would react to them, but Pippin is a very sweet natured bird so as we suspected, he was very good with the babies! I have another video of Pippin gently preening the babies which I will also post. It was a cute moment and I am glad I caught it on video and can share with my RU-vid family! More growth progress videos including us handfeeding them to come. Stay tuned! :)

It’s been nine years, and to this day I still love these cuties. Lovebirds are one of the friendliest house pets but they’re one of the harder ones to tame.

Thanks for the update. That is great news! Sounds like they are doing well. It is common for some to be more "shy" than others and definitely true (I've found) with the older babies if you pull them after 2 weeks, but with time and handling they will bond with you just fine. Keep us posted or feel free to post some "baby" videos. We love documenting our baby lovebirds as they grow and reach little milestones. Good luck with your two little ones and keep up the great "Mommy bird" work! :)

Ok so I've had my two little ones for 2 days now, and up to now, there has been no problem at all :) the littlest one is very social, and loves to be handled and the other one likes to be touched and stuff but is a little more active and "wild"then the other, he's a little older, has most of his feathers. But asides that they are very cute and fun to have!

You are welcome. You should be fine if you start at 3 weeks. For our very first clutch, which was a surprise, we also started hand feeding at 3 weeks and the babies turned out great. Our featured video, with "Chicken Little" talking to herself in the mirror is one of the babies that came from that particular clutch. Good luck with your new brood. Oh Wow, no I had no idea that Pippin meant the birdie! That is so cool. It's funny because after Pippin hatched his name just came to me right away. Thanks for sharing the meaning with us! :)

@Sugarbabe2545 You are welcome. That is a good idea to hold one at a time. After a while the parents should get used to you coming in to check the babies. Ours are so used to it that we can have all the babies out for hours at a time! One other thing you can do to help with the bonding process is try offering the babies some fresh veggies like corn (their favorite) and let them nibble the food from your hand. You can also start offering bird food like crushed up nutriberries too. Mine love it!

@Sugarbabe2545 Hi again and thank you for your questions. Baby lovebirds generally wean in their 7-8 week. If they are spending most of their time 80-90% of it outside the nestbox and eating well on their own you can move them to a weaning cage. Our weaning cage has perches set at lower levels, toys and a box set on the bottom for them to sleep in. I also place the food and water dishes on the bottom for easy access. I have a video showing our weaning cage. Watch closely to see them eat/drink

We start handling them very early on, even before we "pull" them for hand feeding. Typically we will pull them at two weeks, but we have also done so at three weeks. Hope that helps. Cheers from the Lovebird Loft. :)

@megangatita Yeah, Pippin is the biggest sweetheart and so gentle and attentive to his new siblings. Chicken, on the other hand, well, when he met the babies he got fiesty and jealous and actually nipped the youngest one on the head! He was very naughty so he does not get to hang out with the babies anymore! I think Chicken is too much a Mamma's Bird and he gets jealous easily!

@Sugarbabe2545 It depends on how tolerant the parents are of you disturbing their nest. My pair is used to it because we peek in daily even before the eggs have hatched. If you pair allows it, you can start handling the babies daily at about two weeks of age to get them to bond to you. At two weeks of age most breeders will pull the babies for hand-raising but if you want the parents to raise them you should handle the babies every day for about 10-20mins. Hope this helps!

@Sugarbabe2545 ps. Only move the babies you know are definitely past 7 weeks, not any younger, to the weaning cage. If you do not see them eat and drink water on their own, or have any doubt, return to the parents. Hope this helps and I wish you great sucess with your new baby lovebirds!

my female laid 3 eggs so far since august 10th to now. i hope they are fertalize. she sits on them all the time. i hope my male is doing his part to help out, gathering food to feed her.

That is so cute!! Pippin is going to be an excellent parent bird :) Do your lovies often interact with their younger siblings? Or is Pippin a particularly special/loving lovie? (I have lovies, too!)

Bernie Nixon Thanks for your comment. Yes Pippin is a great brother to the babies we've had. Chicken is also a great older sister from our very first clutch and we have many cute videos of her feeding and even being protective of her siblings. I think this is common as a lot of the raising is instinct but can't be 100% sure. Might be interesting to see if there are other videos like mine with related older and younger lovebirds.

@@Hermit_Ronin Oh I am so sorry he got sick. It is so hard when losing one. Our Gigi passed of cancer in January after fighting it for three years. I miss her every day.

Yes@@Hermit_Ronin i cherish the memories of my sweet Gigi. She was also by far the best pet I have ever owned. Just special. Lovebirds are so underrated as pets. They really are incredible personalities in tiny floofy packages. 💕
