Pre Diabetes What I Eat In a Day | Continuous Glucose Monitoring
Here's another Pre Diabetes What I Eat In a Day using my Freestyle Libre 14 day continuous glucose monitor. As someone with insulin resistance and metabolic dysfunction, the continuous glucose monitor has been a tool that I've used to incorporate blood sugar tests and blood sugar experiments along the way to see in real time to see how my blood sugar is reacting to the foods I eat. It has given me invaluable information about how factors like stress, sleep, and food impact my body's ability to process sugar.
A warning before you watch this video: You'll see that I strayed pretty far from my usual pre diabetes diet. While I don't currently prescribe to any specific type of diet (ie. keto, whole food plant based, paleo etc), I do try my best to be mindful of pairing carbs with fat and protein and trying my best not to have a restrictive mindset. While this way of eating has been working okay so far, this weekend I kind of lost a bit of control while celebrating my nephew's birthday. And even though the actual numbers on my CGM were not sky-high, you can see from the graphs that my blood sugar had a very hard time regulating all weekend long and that I put my body through a lot. I just wanted to give you the heads up that this is not a good representation of how I usually try to eat, but I wanted to show you anyway.
A little bit about my blood sugar journey... I was told I was insulin resistant in 2017 after a glucose tolerance test my reproductive endocrinologist ordered for me when I was having trouble getting pregnant. And after conceiving, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes very early on. Since then, I've been diligently learning about blood sugar dysregulation and gathering data through constant finger pricks and CGM experiments since I am now at greater risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes in the future. I've learned A LOT about what works and doesn't work for my body, and how my body responds to different foods. I hope this video helps you on your path to a healthier lifestyle!

Judging by the way your glucose spikes come down so quickly (jealous) it’s hard to tell that you are insulin resistant now. You are young and recover quickly. Having these tools you use so early in your life should ensure your future health. But what do I know. I’m enjoy all your videos 💕.

BTW, at the end of video I was waiting to see the glucose results but the video ended. I think a lot of people watching your video because they need to learn from your experiences because they are going through the same struggle s. So it is very important to take time to share the glucose numbers … instead of just randomly or quickly mentions a number.

I’m pre diab also and using a cgm to learn. We all need to deal with reality and traveling with others sometimes means dealing with fast food, some times it means planning ahead to have low carb options in a cooler bag (cheese and meat rollups…). It’s ok to treat yourself once in a while BUT you also could choose a salad (or two) with grilled chicken at McDs, BK, Wendy’s

Hey I have an experiment question I don't think the glucose goddess did. It regards how much is needed to get her effects.... She found veggies first and vinegar reduced spikes... But how many veggies first is necessary, a lot of will a little to it? Also vinegar, maybe you only need a teaspoon. You could level up her basic tests.

Wonder if you ever found out what caused the extremely low glucose numbers and the up and down curve during the night? Would be great if you share the findings, if any…
@thegoodenoughmama
@thegoodenoughmama Год назад
Honestly, I think it's the inaccuracy of the CGM. When you accidentally lay on your sensor at night while sleeping, it causes what are called compression lows. The pressure that is placed on the sensor creates false lows that are not indicative of what you're blood sugar is doing. I cross-checked my blood sugar when I got more lows and they were always 30+ points off. This is why I have temporarily stopped using this CGM. I find that it is often inaccurate and for how expensive it is, I wasn't too happy with it.

I can't afford a CGM. Instead, I'm going to buy myself some strips and try to mimic continuous monitoring. What are the crucial times at which I should be testing? I'm thinking before and after meals, but a lot of people get lows during the night followed by a surge before waking.
@thegoodenoughmama
@thegoodenoughmama Год назад
I think it depends on how far along your insulin resistance is, but I would think that a good place to start would be your fasting number right when you wake up, right before a meal, and 1 and 2 hours post. As you gather more information, you may want to add or drop more checks. For example, my blood sugar usually stabilizes in the 90's in between meals so I don't ever check my number before eating anymore. Some people say their blood sugar spikes at the 3 hour mark so if you don't notice any spikes after a higher carb meal 1 or 2 hours post, you might try at hour 3. I personally would not wake myself up during the night to see what my blood sugar is doing! I love my sleep.

I notice spikes at 3am and 6am generally but it might be based on your personal circadian rhythm, lifestyle libre is only a little bit more expensive than CGM and honestly the data is worth it

Eating pasta, bread, cakes, rice, potatoes often for decades. The pancreas can't keep up. Eventually the system breaks down. But she did say that her diabetes is gestational. Pretty common after having a child.
@olaraoyemi9349
@olaraoyemi9349 Год назад
She mentioned in an earlier video that it was originally gestational
@thegoodenoughmama
@thegoodenoughmama Год назад
Hi! I think there were a couple main factors that contributed for me. I plan to do a video on this in the future but, 1) I grew up in the 90's when fat was the enemy, so I spent years trying to stay away from meat. As a result, my diet was mostly comprised of carbs. I didn't have a big sweet tooth (although I definitely do now) but I did eat a lot of pasta and bread, thinking that was totally fine for my health and to stay slim. 2) Related, I have a hx of disordered eating. I'd go through periods where I'd starve myself, and periods where I'd eat a ton. I'm sure it did a lot of metabolic damage. That's why now I'm trying to take a more balanced approach where I allow myself to eat carbs in moderation so I don't fall back into that unhealthy mindset, but it's a work in progress! I still struggle a lot. Thanks for your question!

I'm sure the actual gestational diabetes (twice) pushed me further into the pre-diabetic level.

i think your cgm is not correct...at 53 , a diabetic will faint and needs to be in hospital...i start fainting at 75
@thegoodenoughmama
@thegoodenoughmama Год назад
That must be scary to start fainting at 75! When I took my gestational diabetes test, the lab showed that my blood sugar dropped down to 40 at the 3 hour mark, but I was still driving right after, albeit my hands were shaking like crazy. Very dangerous but I was still conscious and very aware. When breastfeeding, my numbers were often in the high 60's after nursing sessions according to finger prick tests, and I felt totally fine. But I do agree with you that I don't trust all those lows on my CGM. When I'd sometimes cross check low numbers with finger pricks, they were almost always higher by 15-20 points, sometimes even more. That's why I took a break from CGMs. The accuracy is questionable for me, and they're very expensive! Thanks for watching!

Yeah..you're not prediabetic. Avg 90s 😮. I think you're just having an eating behaviour problem. As diabetic myself for 20+ year, this is just a case someone too worry too much about the disease. My recommendation to skip breakfast, intermittent fasting, low carb with break on weekend. This behaviour will bite you later in your middle ages so while your body still have insulin sensitivity, train your food behaviour, don't feel bad so much like that and again you have no disease. Be happy.
