Pre Diabetes What I Eat In a Weekend | Continuous Glucose Monitoring
The last video of this series!
Follow me through a weekend where I show you everything I eat as someone who lives with insulin resistance and prediabetes. Despite some discrepancies between my continuous glucose monitor and my finger pricking glucometer in my previous videos, I wanted to show you how I manage eating when food options are not great or when I just... make bad choices, and how that impacts my blood sugar. Even though I've found that I can't rely on my CGM to give me exact blood sugar readings, the continuous glucose monitor has been a tool that I've used to discover trends in my blood sugar. It has given me invaluable information about how factors like stress, sleep, and food impact my body's ability to process sugar.
FYI: I do not prescribe to any one diet. I've tried keto and low carb in the past, and the restrictive mentally hugely impacted my mental health and honestly, didn't make a huge difference in my blood sugar. So this year, I've been trying a more moderate approach where I eat what I want "within reason" while watching portion size and as always, incorporating as much exercise and movement as possible for me in any given day.
A little bit about my blood sugar journey... I was told I was insulin resistant in 2017 after a glucose tolerance test my reproductive endocrinologist ordered for me when I was having trouble getting pregnant. And after conceiving, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes very early on. Since then, I've been diligently learning about blood sugar dysregulation and gathering data through constant finger pricks and CGM experiments since I am now at greater risk for developing Type 2 Diabetes in the future. I've learned A LOT about what works and doesn't work for my body, and how my body responds to different foods. I hope this video helps you on your path to a healthier lifestyle!

For days you have full control of your meals, what are your net carb goals for each meal? Also, what is your fiber daily goal? I am pre-diabetic and trying to figure out a moderate path. Thank you

Hi! To be honest, I don't count carbs or fiber. I just focus on trying not to center my meals around too many processed carbs. A good day would look something like this: breakfast - a hard boiled egg & 1/2 avocado on sourdough toast, lunch - chickpea salad with feta, onions, cucumber, arugula, olive oil, lemon, dinner - roasted veggies (I love brussel sprouts, broccoli, asparagus, cauliflower that I buy frozen and just pop in the air fryer) with a little bit of ranch, roasted chicken, and maybe a little bit of sweet potato. As you can see, I don't eliminate carbs by any means. Everyone's body is different but my body definitely needs some carbs to function well. I just try to choose higher quality carb sources like vegetables. But my eating patterns change so frequently that in a year from now, I might go keto again! Who knows!

One hour is a zone 2workout! I would die trying to do an hour of HIIT. Lots of Z2 boosts my fitness and levels my spikes without boinking. Everyone is different but an hour plus exercise, fasted, has the best all day moderation of my glucose response. I am following your tests with great interest. Thx again.

Hello have you considered going almost zero carb until you get your A1C under control, then slowly working some carbs back in? Meaning , zero pasta, rice, potatoes, bread, sweets or fruit any kind? I did that and went from 5.8 to 5.2 on A1C in 3 months. Also, no sugared salad dressing or condiments of any kind. I was totally hardcore strict and it worked.

Hi! Yes, I did keto for 2 years and I hated it and felt horrible. My a1c only went down .1 point. Were you able to maintain your 5.2 a1c?

@@thegoodenoughmama yes, the only fruit I eat is berries and don’t eat any breads, rice ,pasta, flour, potatoes or regular sugared sweets, only stevia like desserts.

@@thegoodenoughmama I think, if you’re super strict for 3 months, you’ll go from 5.8 to normal. When I say super strict this is what I did. No pasta, rice, potatoes, bread, flour, including almond flour, no fruit, even berries, no tomatoes, no red, yellow or orange peppers, green ok. No dessert of any kind. No salad dressing, except olive oil and vinegar. No ketchup, sauces, bbq etc. once you get to where you want to be, you can back off a little to maintain.

I think fried chicken is not good. After I eat KFC fried chicken in the noon, the spikes happen around midnight !

Oh wow, that is a prolonged blood sugar elevation if it happens 12 hours later! Yes, I've found that the batter on the fried chicken, or any fried food really, is horrible for my blood sugar :(

Hey, biphasic glucose spikes that you talk about at around 6:20 are actually a good sign. Relax.

Tell me more! How are they a good sign? Please educate me on this, as the ups and downs worry me.

@@thegoodenoughmama Give "Biphasic glucose spikes" a google. Basically a healthy pancreas has 2 stages of insulin release. First phase is a big hit from all the insulin it's been making and storing up between meals, then once that is done it will start making more again to deal with the rest of the meal. So it's totally normal and healthy to see a initial glucose peak and trough, then a secondary spike. People with impair pancreatic function however, may lose some of that first phase insulin release, and have a monophasic spike instead.
@thegoodenoughmama
@thegoodenoughmama 10 месяцев назад
@@N330AA Interesting, thanks for breaking it down. I always thought that if you are experiencing a secondary spike, it means your first phase insulin either was insufficient or you are so insulin resistant that your blood sugar spikes back up until your body releases more insulin.

@@thegoodenoughmama Well i'm no doctor, but that's just what i read on the topic, that a dual spike is nothing to be alarmed about. I too usually get dual spikes. Most important thing is to stay under 140 IMO.
