✅ PRICELESS TIPS FOR RUSTED LINES AND QUICK CONNECTS. Easy method quickly replaces a fuel filter without breaking ANY lines. Gm uses these fuel lines on millions of vehicles. Covers Full size, mid size, compacts, Trucks, SUV's, Cars, vans and work utility vehicles made by GM. Some vehicle model years have the filter in the tank and are none serviceable. But most are covered. Change your filter regularly to avoid expensive repairs on fuel parts like fuel injectors and fuel regulators. Also helps prevent breakdowns and "no starts" from weak and low fuel pressure to the engine.

I would remove the fuel pump fuse or relay and crank the engine over for a few seconds to release the fuel pressure. Or you will get a mouth and eye full of fuel. You never mentioned that. But other wise good video.

@ThaHandyman1212
@ThaHandyman1212 3 года назад
Before opening and removing the fuel filter did you relieve the fuel line pressure?
@EasyFixShaun
@EasyFixShaun 3 года назад
When the car is shut off and key is off and removed, the pump isn’t operating. Once I shut the key off, I let the vehicle sit for a couple minutes. Fuel pressure will be close to or basically at zero. There will be fuel in the line. You will want safety equipment to guard against any problems when disconnecting in the event some fuel sprays out. It should just drop out. The residual fuel should drain into a drain pan and be discarded properly. Make sure there is no ignition source of any kind around the vehicle.

what about relieving the fuel pressure? is there not a schrader valve or something similar to relieve the pressure in the fuel line before starting?
@EasyFixShaun
@EasyFixShaun 6 лет назад
Yes you could relieve it at the shredder valve test port. But the easiest is to wait a few minutes with the engine off. It will naturally deplete itself to zero psi in a minute or two. If you are worried about it. wait 5-10 minutes to be sure. :)

I have the 2004 gmc sierra 4.3l v6 the steel line going into the fuel filter is leaking and I can't find one replacement line. I know you have to flare the break lines do you need to do the same to the steel line going into the fuel filter ?
@EasyFixShaun
@EasyFixShaun 5 месяцев назад
Yes usually these lines need a special flare, it may be searchable under "gm fuel line flare" if you want a tool to do it. Even with the tool they are extremely hard to get right. The flare squishes the line and its very difficult to get correct. A gm fuel line repair kit can work sometimes. Gm sells the entire lines that you need. Usually a repair kit or the entire line is the best bet but it's hard to know for sure with what you have. I hope that helps or is at least food for though 😃

yup those rings sound about like the correct ones. Make sure it's compatible with fuel and any correct ID/OD/WIDTH ring will work.

Question! 2008 avalanche have a fuel filter inside the tank? If not do you know where it is? Getting a low flow message when stepping on the gas causing a misfire.
@EasyFixShaun
@EasyFixShaun 3 года назад
Your Avalanche filter is in the fuel tank on the end of the fuel pump. I would do a fuel pressure test. If its low you may need a fuel pump. You will get a new screen free of charge with a new pump assembly. If you do need a pump make sure you only use a delphi brand on any gm vehicle. If not you will likely need to replace it twice. I have seen a ton of problems not using the correct pump. Sometimes non delphi pumps only last about 60-90 days! They usually never have the correct pressure either and gm's are super sensitive to the correct pressure. Please report back and let me know if you made any progress 😃🔧

What about the 3 port filter on a 2000 GMC Sonoma?
@EasyFixShaun
@EasyFixShaun 2 года назад
I believe those have 3 quick disconnects. There is a cheap tool you should be able to get on amazon or locally at any parts store. It disconnects the lines fairly easily. If the quick connects are rusted they can be difficult. If that is the case- soak em in penetrating oil to help save them before you commit to removing and possibly breaking them. There are repair kits available with plastic line extensions that can work for them sometimes. They can be difficult to repair though so be careful not to break them. Take your time and usually they will come apart easily 😃🔧
@bigbopete2667
@bigbopete2667 6 лет назад
Is this the same on a 05 chevy suburban 5.3 vortec?
@EasyFixShaun
@EasyFixShaun 6 лет назад
No. I just checked the part store for you. You have a filter inside the fuel tank on your model. It is mounted on the bottom of the fuel pump. Some of the newer trucks only have a filter inside the fuel tank. Those are not serviceable typically. You just run them until they go bad (which shouldn't happen unless you fill your tank with jerry cans. A lot more debris will collect in the tank and plug the filter). Or change them should you ever need to replace the fuel pump and remove the pump anyways. I hope this helped you. I should have a fuel pump replacement video coming out fairly soon also. Thanks for watching man!

@EasyFixShaun

That could make it more difficult to line the threads up correctly. Make sure you don’t cross thread and check the o-ring is intact. Don’t force it together. Your gonna really want to take your time with that one.

@EasyFixShaun

You can do that! Usually the are reusable many times if they are oem. I would get a special o-ring made for fuel from the dealer or a parts store equivalent. It needs to be a nitrile or equivalent. Rock auto might be helpful also. I hope that helps 😀😀

Most likely they aren't related. Hard to say. But the fuel filter is part of the fuel supply system. It sounds as though you need to diagnose the fuel delivery system. Could be anything. ??? Torsion bar in the way+T-case in the way plus extra cabling = no room to work. Your line is not nearly as rusty as mine. Having no luck breaking loose and am afraid I'm going to twist the line and then I'm going to be screwed. Any added suggestions besides keeping the 16mm side stationary. Yours busted loose so easy. Edit... I KNOW I'm going to twist that line and have a bigger problem. I'll coat the threads with penetrating oil daily for 7 days and maybe try it next weekend.

On some it is a little tighter for sure. This is the only way to do it since you can not use a heat source of any kind. I would have a back up plan ready so that you can finish the replacement should the line break. Maybe even have a back up plan for the back up plan. I have never had a line damaged or break using this method because the nut is never spun on the line. That is were the breakage occurs from heavy rust. If there are two rusted fittings (one on each side of the filter) I always attempt the least rusty one first. If I can get that one removed the filter can spin off the most corroded line by holding it stationary. I would make sure you us line wrenches only. If not you will likely damage the nuts and it won't work. If you aren't sure, take it to a shop. It is not worth breaking a line. That is all the tips I can think of. I wish you luck! 😃🔧🔧

Well I just completed this project. The lines, supply and return were SO RUSTY that I opted to replace both. The new lines came with a filter but I had a heck of a time separating the end of the lines from the quick connectors. They literally fell apart with part of the steel line remaining in the quick connect. I had to remove the short 1 foot nylon line supply and return lines from the pump, insert a needle nose pliers, stand on the nylon line and pull with all my might. Oh yeah, to do all that I had to remove the box. All that Mickey Mouse just to change a filter. I pulled the old filter apart and I can't describe how black and cruddy it was. At any rate, if I had been in or south of Missouri or in the West or Southwest it would have been easy but being from the rust belt it was a struggle and a half. The rust that is on the underside of that truck... words cannot describe or do justice. Makes me think of pictures of the Titanic. Most of the bolts attaching the box to the frame stripped out do. I had to use an air chisel and punch on both sides to get three of them out. Other than that it was cake.

😂 of my! Yes i agree with you. Rust sucks. When it gets to a certain point there are not any option except completely rip the lines out and start over. Nice Job sticking with it and working your way through it. I'm pretty sure rust is 90% off the repair in the rust belt. It just plain stinks 😀🔧

How do you change a fuel filter in a 2005 1500 Chevy Express van because the fuel filter is inside the gas tank so how do you change that
@EasyFixShaun
@EasyFixShaun 2 года назад
You have the in tank "screen". Nothing sticks to it. It just screens out material that is too large for the pump. So basically you don't need to do anything until the fuel pump goes bad. Once that happens you have to drop the tank for replacement usuall, pretty large job generally speaking. The new pump assembly comes with a new screen at the point. So just replace with the pump. No maintenance service interval on that style is needed. I hope that helps 😃🔧

When doing this procedure do you need to have a empty tank
@EasyFixShaun
@EasyFixShaun 3 года назад
No, the gas doesn’t siphon out of the tank, but there will be 1-6 ounces of fuel that needs to be drained properly so that the filter can be removed and a new one installed. Make sure there is no ignition source anywhere in the vicinity of you, or the fuel. You need to be on a level surface with the key in the OFF position. Do not power up the fuel pump or turn on the ignition while the lines are disconnected. Lots of fuel will come out very quickly. Properly drain the 1-6 ounces of fuel safely out of the vehicles fuel lines by disconnecting the fuel filter fittings and draining from the disconnected lines.

@EasyFixShaun
@EasyFixShaun 6 лет назад
Oh man sorry to hear that! What ever you do, do not spin the fuel line fitting any more. Spinning the line nut can wrinkle the line. The rusted line causes that because the nut can not spin on the line. At this stage of the game replacement would be best for you. But, If you can break the filter free of the line without disturbing it any more, you may be able to make a temporary fix until you can replace it. Triple check that line for leaks if you go for the temporary fix.

08 Van fuel filters are in the fuel tank. Non serviceable unless you remove the fuel pump from inside the tank. With those you just run them forever until you have a problem. There is no maintenance. They usually last a long long time. Usually always longer than the fuel pump as long as you don't use dirty gas from a gas can or something. Usually you end up having a fuel pump go bad and that is when they get replaced. They come with the pump assembly and they look like a sock on the end of the suction side of the pump. @EasyFixShaun 5 лет назад
Hi Bruce. Sorry for the delay. Yours is in the tank. I’m not sure why GM did away with fuel filters on the frame. It could be because of plastic tanks and minimal particulate to filter out now? I am not sure what their corporate explanation would be. I guess they think the sock/screen on the pump (in the fuel tank) is enough. I would love to hear what they have to say on that. They won’t admit to much though. I’m sure it got the “MCM” treatment. “Money cost management” is the name of the game for them. They like to figure out where they can cut costs. If it’s significant enough a CEO likely received a bonus. That is my take on ignorant changes like removing a fuel filter. Every fuel filter I have changed with or without a plastic tank has debris in it and makes my feel glad I changed it. It’s a no-brainer to have a fuel filter on a vehicle. Actual technicians have never once been surveyed by the manufacture on what is a good idea and what is not. If that where the case with fuel filters I think most techs would overwhelmingly say to keep them. Ya we make money changing them. It’s not much. But on my own ride I would want one without question. I went on a tangent there. I hope I answered your question.

New England rust is my biggest concern. Truck has been good to me hope to run it long time.
@EasyFixShaun
@EasyFixShaun 5 лет назад
No problem man. I just looked up your pump. If you have the 69 inch bed length you do have the metal top fuel pump assembly. If you have a long bed those are plastic. Why GM? Why!?? They don't do it on accident. Seems like a great way to sell parts. Anyway, those metal ones are ripe for rust and definitely can and will leak eventually. I have replaced many. Especially on the metal fitting or metal line right at the top. Especially in New England and Michigan! You may be able to get a strong light and mirror to see if that is leaking or seeping on top there. Usually look above the fuel tank between the tank and bed. Its a little tricky but you should be able to get glimpses of the top of the metal sending unit to see its condition. Asses the situation. You can also remove the bed or tilt it very carefully for replacement. Sometimes that is easier when doing it at home. You don't have to remove the tank using that method, Just the bed. Easier than you think too! Just remove four bolts, filler neck nuts at the gas fill and tail lamps and maybe a couple wiring clips. Takes 2 people to tilt it. 4 people to remove it.

@EasyFixShaun
@EasyFixShaun 4 года назад
The fuel level in the tank shouldn't affect fuel filter replacement as long as your vehicle is sitting level. It shouldn't syphon out of the tank. The fuel in the fuel filter needs to be safely drained and disposed of. Once that is safely done, replace the filter.

What would you do if they’re nuts on both sides of the filter? And you can’t leave one of the lines stationary.
@EasyFixShaun
@EasyFixShaun 4 года назад
If you think they are both going to break you should make sure you have time to replace a line in the worst case senario if one breaks. Sometimes it’s a gamble. I haven’t had that happen yet. I break free which ever one will move. If you get just one to move you can keep the other stationary. Pick the easiest line to replace if you have no choice and one will break.

I've checked fuses and everything is fine and I've tried to jump it thinking it was the battery but no luck with that. The fuel pump was replaced less than a year ago so I'm hoping it's not the pump.
