Pulleyed SVT Lightning Destroys an Eaton Supercharger

In this video, I explain why I haven't had my SVT Lightning on the channel for several months. Last summer, I tore up my recently rebuilt Jokerz Ported and Rebuilt Supercharger. I was doing some short roll races (40-100) on a night with excellent weather but an 8lb pulley is still hard on it and ended up locking up the supercharger completely and being stranded. I got home, tore the supercharger down and this is what I found.

Damn that sucks! I know the feeling, I blew my headgasket on my new built motor on a datalog pull! I had maybe 500ish miles.. Turns out cometic is trash on lightning's, or actually Ford's in general I found out too late! How much was the port work anyway? I kinda miss my how much a Eaton whines especially compared to my Whipple, but cogs made up for it 😁. Try N and hit up Neil Otis for the port work next time, he got into the low 10s I believe, stock block and his port work. Nice vids keep it up 👍

Thanks man. Port was about 500, paint, shipping, fees about 500 altogether and rebuild was about 500. So that was a 1500 dollar disappointment. I will never port another Eaton again after this second one.

@@605BOLT Sheesh, yea at that price point you're well on your way to a twin screw.... But your running a 8lber right? That thing probably got super hot. Man, I'd be a little worried to run that on my built motor with my luck lol!

I definitely wanted to go with a non stock blower, but I'm still stock full exhaust and I would need some fuel upgrades as well. Add it all up and it would be somewhere near 10K to upgrade. It will happen, but with a third kiddo due next week I had to be good and not let the nuts swing this time. When this new Eaton craps out (and I can guarantee it will), I will have to do something different (KB, Whipple, TVS 2650). One of those three would wake this truck up for sure.

@@605BOLT Congratulations on the new addition bro! I only have one, and if I never started my build before I had him, I definitely wouldn't be able to do anything 😂. When I cracked my stock block, it was just supposed to be a stockish rebuild.... but I went down the rabbit hole, ended up doing a Whipple, cam's, upgraded heads, full fore fuel system, etc.... and I still gotta finish my cobra! Sigh wish these mod motors were a little cheaper to build, but I won't get rid of them either, there's no turning back now 🤣

Yes thank you. Going to be wild with three. And I can totally see how that happens. Easy to get into the "well, while I'm here..." mentality. Your truck sounds pretty set up. With just a few more mods mine will be pretty potent on the street I think.

None was given other than the rebuilder thought it got hot. Well, it was about 60 degrees out when it locked up so....

so is this why its recommended to go with a 4 pound lower pulley? maybe 8 is too much torque? im asking because im looking into getting my Lightning ported on supercharger and head ported.

The reason lots of people suggest 4lb lower is because it's a more beginner level amount of boost that can be handled on stock engine components. My truck has forged rods and Pistons which aren't factory equipment hence being able to push more boost through it. That said, it is outside the blower's efficiency range so it's definitely pushing the limits.

One of them did yes. I think I did that when I originally pullied up. I don't remember haha. Been so many damn blowers put on this old truck that I can't keep it straight. That said, its plenty loud and with a port I don't think its really necessary. One time I found one of the plugs sitting on the intercooler brick so that scares me and I don't want to tear up a blower just from having a plug blow around in there.

that happen to me, two weeks ago with edelbrock kit for camaro... the eaton supercharger is TVS R1740 ... with only 200 kms of use... im trying to get the warranty, but begin of all, i dont understand how this happen... big question, how you solve it?

Ugh. I had to get a whole different used blower and then have it ported and rebuilt and painted.

I wish! I would have to do thousands of dollars of supporting mods on top of thousands of dollars of Whipple so I'm going to go Eaton again one more time. Third kid arrives at the end of the summer so I can't go all out on this revision. It should still be pretty quick for a pickup.

How did you mount your gauge pillar?

It's a black outer layer. So I took the original pillar out completely first. I tossed that on the shelf for someday if I ever go stock again. Then I went to the junkyard and got another pillar trim from a regular F150. Then I drilled some holes through it for the wiring and mounted the black cover to the junkyard pillar and installed it all.

That’s why I run a two stage methanol injection with a Stiegemeier venom cooler.

Thats pretty trick. I don't need all that with the E85. Plenty of octane. What does the venom cooler use for cooling?

@@605BOLT the venom cooler uses the same coolant as the intercooler/heat exchanger. It T’s off from the rubber lines into the S/C snout. I also run E85/E54. When using E85 I blend it with 87 70/30 because my truck runs better. On E54 I use 90/10.

Does it have some sort of heat exchanger in the snout? The snout is filled with oil so I'm confused how that works haha. Sorry for being a dumbass.

I don't really know. Could be that it got too hot but it was only 58F that night so very very nice weather for that truck. It is pullied so it's obviously spinning really hard. Could have been hurt prior and finally let go this night. 🤷‍♂️

An 8lbs lower is not unusual and should relatively keep the blower spinning within its efficiency RPM wise. Sorry to say but this seems like an error on the company that did the port work. Eaton’s are very stout blowers.

Its ok. I was pissed off last fall when it happened but when you pulley them really hard they're kind of ticking time bombs haha. Been a while since I've given this truck any attention so I'm glad to have an opportunity to take care of some things.
