muppetrolf i guess part of the problem/solution was still wanting to build and make fighter aircraft in Europe, than just going out buying American/French equipment wasn't a good fit (for pride) and trying to keep jobs in Europe at the time, but Eurofighter, like the F-22/35 are way over budget, that's what happens when your pushing the envelope in design and technology they almost always go way over budget. But overall I agree, F-15's doing the typhoon job would have been far more cost effective if they had brought them 20yrs ago. If you look just how long it has taken typhoon to finally enter service it has been an embarrassment. Why they have prematurely retired the harrier I am still scratching my head about, the F-35 is still a long way off being fully operational and there is a massive hole what the harrier can do for the RAF and Navy and what I read the navy aren't happy with the rising cost of the V/STOL version and may just go for the short take off version, where that leaves the RAF I don't know?

muppetrolf A 10, are you really that stupid, the F 15 is expensive and also very costly to fly, it is not even close to the Typhoon, as for the F 18, forget it obsolete and ok for Australia but in the modern world..Raphale is ok, Typhoon is better.

John Richardson Well yes and no. Technically we could have carried on with the GR9s and carriers but the reality was our economy was soundly fucked (to use an economic expression). As Liam Byrne wrote "There is no money left" and worse there was huge national deficit and even more relevant there was a £35Billion hole in the defence budget. Basically Labour had ordered £Billions of kit (like two carriers, Astute subs and some destroyers) and not a penny in the kitty to pay for it. So the incoming Government had some seriously difficult choices. The Army and Marines were engaged in Afghan. with the RAF on supply runs and so the Navy (and RAF) had to take a hit. Harriers are brilliant and I saw first hand just how good they are in a war but they are an old platform, the carriers were actually falling apart and we had to make cuts. At least they also put Nimrod out of its misery. 9 years late and not one flying. Seeing the last Harriers being crated up and shipped off to the USA was heart breaking but that was one of the prices we had to pay for the 'Labour years'. But at least we now have a funded budget, everything is, or can be, paid for, the carriers contracts have been renegotiated from the nonsense we inherited and our military are now getting some excellent and state of the art kit. For me the jury is out on the F35 and I do wonder if the £2.3Billion we gave to Lockheed for development could have been better spent elsewhere. But 'we are where we are' and I just trust the tech boys and girls will make the F35 the aircraft it is supposed to be.

that is not how it works. the pilot has to have a flightplan, and fly a pattern, that has been approved by flight command. So the whole show is planned, and there is no free flight allowed

Downfall Deliveries The Typhoon is not the loudest, it certainly is loud if you are close to it just as any fighter is. When they are used for QRA and go supersonic the boom is very loud if you are close.

The tornado would dissect it, so would the Rafale. The Euro-fighter Typhoon is a poor copy of a Rafale. The Grippen,most Mig's and Sukhoi's any thing Russian or American.I bet a Hind or Apache would too much for a typhoon.

Eurofighter was designed as an air superiority fighter / interceptor. Bombing capabilities were only secondary.

+Des M. Operationally only Lands in the vertical (VL). Barely any operational capability with the fuel it needs to take off vertically so Short Take Off (STO) via ramp - the ramp gives even more lift than short take off tthus further increasing load bearing capability

Last time I heard a Vulcan take off I was near the end of an airfield in Cornwall in 1981, it went right overhead at 5 am. fantastic sound.

John Richardson I was based for a short while at Marham and there was always a rag bag of aircraft in and out as it was the main refuelling training and conversion base with Victors but Vulcans would be in and out and howling like banshees. Lots of other great aircraft Lightning, Canberra etc ...

10ft higher and it would have disappeared into a typical Hampshire sky. Nice moves to keep the aeroplane visible at all times.

Poor weather conditions including low level cloud cover makes the regular display useless so an alternative low level display is flown which limits the options. Typical Uk weather unfortunately.

Russian aircraft - great at airshows but have a terrible record in real world combat. Time will tell if the SU35 can change that terrible reputation.

It is quite capable of it but what you see is just vapour, not a shock wave.

KATAERO1 Not a lot of drag and it does not use a lot of fuel by comparison with other fighter`s It has been flown at airshows with no load and up to a full load, it still performs extremely well and will supercruise with external stores, something some other fighter`s will not do

John Richardson So, does drop tank degrade the jet's performance or not, in terms of thrust loading, wing loading, acceleration, and maximum allowable G-force? I think I purposely left out the Raptor which only use drop tanks when ferrying across an ocean. The Raptor also has composite airframe and yet to do a demo with drop tank. So, it seems to me that the use of drop tank is only to ensure that the jet won't run out of fuel before the end of the demo.

Just tighter and at higher speed than the F 16 can manage and the Typhoon can keep turning long after the F 16 pilot has given up.

18tangles It is what Boeing have become rather proficient at! They are 'at it' over the Tanker programme as well. $Billion (and counting) over budget and a year late and they haven't actually built one yet! Maybe they let the 787 design folks too near it? Meanwhile the A330MRTT that actually won the contract has been flying successfully with our RAF for some time ... Why would the US buy more F18s when they are being replaced by the F35 and the airframe is a 30 year old design?
