I really enjoyed watching this video! I learned a lot about historical clothing and movie costumes. There are so many things I didn’t realize before that went into costume design ❤

That makes me so happy! I'm glad you enjoyed :) YES, there's a lot of thought and research that goes into costume design, even for modern shows and movies like Sex and the City. If we look at the characters on the show, their outfits were selected to underscore their unique personalities and support their story arcs. Like Samantha always wears power suits and does a lot of colour blocking to show that her character is bold and bright and bucks the norms of society. Carrie is always dressed in very feminine clothes with lots of skirts and tulle, but her outfits are always heavily layered and accessorized to show that her character is complex and there are many different "layers" to her personality. Miranda's clothes borrow from a more gender-bending masculine aesthetic to highlight her feminism and independence, and Charlotte's ladylike dresses and structured handbags show her more traditional values and personality. Costumes do so much to support a story and communicate character, foreshadowing and the passage of time :)

Wonder what's your own opinion about the costumes and fashion in this serial which ended almost 10 years ago. Kind regards.

When costumers put historical characters in modern clothing and say it's because modern viewers won't "relate" to period costumes, what they're saying is that they assume their viewers are stupid, or that the target demographic for this show or movie is people who are both ignornant of history and completely uninterested in learning about it. Like, "this show is just Gossip Girl with accents".
@meghansandor
@meghansandor Год назад
That's a really good point, and a lot of the reason why the blatant disregard for historical accuracy bothers me so much...like, no most people are not mindless idiots, and if we're consuming this kind of content then we're obviously okay with historical accuracy. Know your audience!! lol
@moonlily1
@moonlily1 Год назад
@@meghansandor I think most people don't know much about historical fashion and won't notice particular details- like this waistline is too low or hoop skirts were out of vogue by this time- as long as it looks broadly associated with the time period. However, they do know that women in the Tudor era weren't wearing strapless dresses with high slits, and they won't run screaming in repulsion at the sight of a bonnet.
@meghansandor
@meghansandor Год назад

Meghan.... If Egypt was ruled by Greece for nearly three hundred years, would you agree with me in theory that Egyptians could very well have intermarried with some people from Greece and ergo are Greek heritage?.....You have peaked my curiosity?....And so, the next question is: did the Egyptians build the Great Pyramid or did the technology originate from Greece concepts of architecture?.... I am a fan of Pyramids of Egypt and your comments have re-ignited the enduring question: Who were the builders of the Pyramids at Giza and what were purpose?.... the end... Always in Good Taste... CHEERS!... Be Supportive and Subscribe.... PS.... Very best going off to Scotland and with your studies...
@meghansandor
@meghansandor Год назад
For sure, the entire Coptic language, religion and culture in modern-day Egypt is directly descended from the Hellenistic culture of the first century CE. The pyramids were definitely built by native Egyptians though, a LONG time before the Greeks arrived. The Great Pyramids at Giza were built around 2,500 BCE, about 2,000 years before the Greeks came to Egypt. To give that some context, there was the same amount of time between the building of the Great Pyramids and the birth of Cleopatra as there is between us and the birth of Christ. Blows your mind a little to think about that, right? :)

If the costumes for "Emma" (2020), which is one of my least favorite Austen adaptations, reflected women's fashions from the late 1810s to the early 1820s, then it failed. "Emma" was published in 1815. But I thought the costumes were beautiful. However, my sister noticed that a few of the mens' jackets were not fitted well. And I'm not so easily distracted by bad costumes in period dramas if the story is pretty good. Which is probably why I like "Bridgerton". I just didn't care how the story for "Emma" was adapted in the 2020 movie. I loathe "The Favorite", but I really enjoyed Sandy Powell's costumes, despite that anachronistic fabric used. I really liked the costumes in "Marie Antoinette", but I found the film's narrative rather shallow. I love "Gentleman Jack". I love the costumes and I love the story. Two thumbs up. And I love 1988's "Dangerous Liaisons" for the same reasons.
