A great way to start a new project, good bones and a solid base to build upon... I look forward to seeing what you make of it? Congratulations on the purchase btw.
that's a beautiful example mate. i fully appreciate the original rego having been carried on for 36 years. I went from club rego to full rego recently just to have period correct plates and will continue that well into the future. I look forward to seeing your journey with this. btw it's "et cetera" lol
It's insane to think 30-40k gets you an na vl that still needs paint fixed or interior bits replaced etc, keen to see this build and like you said if you want 1 bad enough you got to front up with the coin
Glad your back mate . I had two VL 's first one got stolen back in the day never to be found back in New Zealand VL Berlina . Then a few years later I bought a Calais sold it to move to Australia and now got one that needs some love that doesn't run . Be good to see what you do with yours mate .
New ignition barrel id imagine should sort that problem out. You have a peice of Aussie motoring history mate,i hope you enjoy it and good luck getting it to the way you want it 👌
Let’s gooooooo! Was sitting here refreshing for ages. I love it even more because it has the same interior colour as mine, my favourite personally haha
I have a N/A Auto Berlina, bought it for 3.5k in 2017, have a had a stack of other bogan classics since but I kept the VL. Ended up being the one to keep thankfully! Bought with ~70K kms and it's at about 110k now, has been shedded for a few years waiting for me to finish finding bits to turbo convert. Interior is mint with working berlina/calais cassette stezza! Keen to follow your progress, will inspire me to throw spanners at mine finally. Mine is still registered with garden states!
Pausing @08:30 just to say, That's fricken mint bro! I've had my VL Berlina Factory V8 for many years & put more than 30K into the drivline alone. There's more, but Nuff Said ha ha. Cheers.
Lol😅 4 or 5 of my highschool mates had VB-VLs back in the 90s. I think all of them could open and start each other's cars, and pull the key out while still running 😂
That’s a awesome buy body work done CORRECTLY not just full bogged like most are. Speaking to panel shop bonus. Good buy mate. I was guessing yellow bt1 but most full bog this purchase was CORRECT MATE enjoy the build 😊
Love it. First priority should be to investigate the leaky injector. Over 20 years ago I had a factory turbo exec that had an engine bay fire due to an injector seal perishing.
Congratulations Chris great buy. You now have a great Holden combo. End of gen 1 and the start of gen 2. I also have both the VL and VN. With the price it is what it is now. Prices have dropped back down the past year tough still worth a lot of money. I think you got your self a nice clean stock car and as you said the paint is fresh , that's a huge expense with vls. I would recommend you get some bollards installed at your place. Peace of mind. Platinum bollards here in Melbourne will sort you out. Congratulations again. Might see you on the road or local car event in either the VL or VN. 👌🏼
That’s perfection couldn’t look any better. Pair of 4 inch front runners like the vn will just finish it off. Looking forward to them Wednesday videos even more now. Good work 👌🏼
Sorry for any crap comments, love ya content and ya channel. I've actually viewed a lot of your vids over the last few years. I didn't realise how much of a nob jockey I am. Thanks and soz again.
Exactly like mine, 87 maranello and mx grey exec all books 1 owner when I got it 12 years ago. The plastic cig covers go blue over time just because of either the die or plastic used, some more blue than others. Blower motor under passenger probably gone, replace that will be fine. Rego plate is repro should have original garden state, but you can get those now from VicRoads $100 or so
as you said a lot of stuff is available repro these days. I hope rares starts making the inside rear pillar covers soon. you can buy new ignition barrels pretty cheap. You probably fixed the door already, ive had that problem when the mech isnt bolted in tightly. Cray what they fetch these days. i got my VL for free and got it running properly, later it copped a used stock turbo kit that finished the original engine off. It then got a 25DET out i pulled out a r33 half cut. it was cheap and cheerful fun. i still have it tucked away in a shed.
Have owned a fair few of those things back in the day 😳 , heater fan is an easy fix , you can fit a new barrel to the column (or get the one in it repaired) , good luck finding trim! (Speaking of , that would be series 1 trim , series 2 had the same front seats as vn iirc) . As for whether it was a bad choice to buy or not ... only you can answer that , it's your car 👍 (even if it is basically the Aus version of a cefiro 😅 ) . One suggestion I will make though , is if it's a keeper , I'd highly suggest being tasteful with the mods (i.e not overboard with the exhaust and suspension , keep it drivable enough so that it wouldn't become a pita in traffic or sunday drives with the family 👍 )
i remember these ol bangers, its that stupid igntion switch on top of the column, replace it dont try fix it with electrical spray, but yer its basically seized , aka why u have to flick it to shutdown, they failed 2-3 years after the were new , i replaced them at the dealer all the time
So cool! If you're not to keen on paying full reg to keep the plates, you can buy the plates from Vicroads. You can even buy them to match the old school gardenstate look. Can't imagine they would want the original plates back if you went out and purchased them. You might have to call them though because the website will just see the plates are still registered and won't allow you to buy them. Idk.
I thought you could keep the plates. I cancelled the rego on one of my cars once, as I was selling it without rego or road worthy, and I asked VicRoads if I could keep the plates instead of handing them in, as I might put them on my next car, and they let me keep them.
Good stuff congrats 👌 I'd love a project like this.. something to put stout running gear in. I bought an immaculate V2 Monaro recently for a toy, and it's so damn tidy I can't bring myself to bastardise it.
Good thing with full rego is if you have any combo in the A-F series you can get repro "garden state" plates and if you have any N-Q combo you can get "on the move" ones, but they are about $500 a set.
Dude this is a great purchase, and let’s be honest you’ve always wanted one 😂 perhaps sell the VN and go all in on the VL, I’m sure it’s crossed your mind. I don’t have the parts you asked for but do have a mint T bar auto shifter from a mint VL I converted to LS. It’s in perfect condition if the shifter is a bit rough in the red beast. Look forward to this build
Rarespares have the ignition switch $99, but there is also a cog in the steering column that might be broken or missing teeth that could cause the issue you have there with it not returning when you turn it off.
Congrats mate! Theres no better feeling than getting a car you really really wanted, and as someone who also recently way over paid for a car that was 5k when i was a teenager ill say it still feels worth it after a month of ownership! haha
My parents had a dark blue with brown VL exec back in the day. Such a shame it got written off. My good mate picked up a highly optioned VL Berlina in 2015 for 4.5k - such a bargain.
Those flaming ash trays in the rear doors. Thats a really nice example of a VL bud. Gave my VL turbo away back in the day far out. Now they are worth 40K. Jeez
Congrats! Holdcom and Nucomparts for parts, blower is probably the switch they're bad. Always going to have problems the VL is a Love/Hate relationship!
