Dodge & Jeep Output Speed Sensor Location and Removal This design of sensor is found on nearly all 1988 and newer truck models New Replacement Sensor www.cascadetransmissionparts.... CascadeTransmissionParts.com
2 shops told me I needed a new transmission. I watched a bunch of videos and changed the speed input sensor and completely fixed it. Unbelievable. Edit, 3 months later still fine. Edit, 2 years later still fine
Before there was RU-vid..trans shops absolutely raped customers for new transmissions because nobody knew what was happening with problematic shifting...all it really was.. a speed sensor!
Was easy peasy and it fixed the shifting problem with the truck and the check engine light is out! Yay! Just might warn peeps about the cupful or so of transmission fluid that's gonna pour out when you unscrew it. lmao. =-) Thanks for the awesome informative video!
These videos are a real service, I cannot thank you enough. Awesome, I just bought the kit from you with the upgraded BrogWarner solenoid and am installing the kit tomorrow. Let you know how it goes. Thanks again!
a hard shift could be anything from high line pressure , to a sticking friction plate. Was the fluid changed in the last couple years ? One thing , you could remove the output speed sensor , and inspect the end of it. They will always have some metal on them as they are magnetic , but if it has a great deal of metal then you have have to overhaul it.
FYI, Lifting the rear of the tuck also please, the fluid will go to the front of the transmission since the speed sensor is in the back for the transmission
Ron - be sure the unit is filled - should be topped in running and in Neutral also may be worth a front band adjustment if not done (this is a 5 minute process) these units are known to act a little odd when even half a qt low on fluid
Thanks! My check engine light is on but me being a truck driver and gone so much it's hard to get a diagnostic test ran. Just looking for a place to start and I'm crossing my fingers that this is it.
Hey CTP, is this the same for a 2006 Jeep Wrangler/TJ Auto and if so, could a faulty speed sensor be the culprit for 1-2nd gear bucking when cold or not related? I'm replacing the filter, fluid, etc and thought I might as well get these new while I'm down there for a few more bucks. Thanks for the vid!
no a windstar in a front wheel drive you have output sensor on the top of the case about 6-7"'s back from the axle typically there will have a wire lead as part of them that is about 10"'s long
Thanks for the video. I noticed that sensor you removed was damaged at the tip. I just had the same failure and was concerned if something was wrong internally that wiped out the tip. Have you seen this before?
Hello - most models this is a 5 minute swap ; i have never heard of this issue on your model - a thought undo the mount , and slightly jack the transmission up to allow more access. This may add 20 minutes to the fix though.
Thanks for your quick response . Do you have any suggestions on were to go from here . The transmission does not slip just shifts hard . I did just replace the instrument cluster because the speedometer wasn't working right but now it does . could it be the output speed sensor ?
I have a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Full Time 4WD Does not have that sensor you show? only the speed sensor on transfer case (larger 3 wire setup) Am I not seeing the correct sensor or am I in the wrong place? Car will drop out of OD or not shift into OD Intermittently. Sometimes not for a week. Also shows up as Code 12 on test from dash {engine check light.} Any idea's Thanks, p1nball
Great job on the video! I have been searching for an answer to this everywhere. I am installing an aftermarket stereo/navigation unit and need to hook it up to the speed sensor wire, i suppose it would be the output? Where can i find this and what color is the wire. In my investigation it seams to be a common question for several vehicles but no good answers. 2010 Chrysler Town and Country. Thanks
Hello , yes it should be shown in the above video unless you have a 4.7L engine , then see our other site electrical advantage , then see part # D72436X2
there is fluid in the overdrive housing and depending on angle of the truck/unit, some will come out just remove old one and install the new one , shouldn't be much more than a dribble
I had my vehicle up on a slight incline so I could get under it when I pulled the sensor fluid came out is that normal? It did not repair my speedometer as I had hoped.
Isn't there another sensor further back on the overdrive case that is the V.S.S. or vehicle speed sensor? Isn't that the sensor that controls the speedometer and odometer on the 42 re transmission?
Hi, I have a durango 1999, I changed the throttle position sensor, has improved enough to no longer drowns arrarcar but follow the truck pulling the change until the 3rd, I think I should change the output speed sensor .... I disconnect the battery to change the speed sensor?
thanx for sharing, im ready to replace the speed sensor on my 98 dodge ram 5.9, my only quedtion is, can i replace the sensor with out having to remove the transmission?
i have a 98 dodge durango the transmission is shifting good no hard shifting it just been shifting at high rpms what do you think could be the problem??
I am reading there’s an input also yet anywhere like Rockauto only shows output sensors. Is there an input also and is is the exact same sensor and that’s why when shopping it only shows output available? 1996 ZJ 4x4 4.0
So on my 1998 jeep cherokee limited that sensor would cause my speedometer not to work?... also how much is the sensor at like a parts store? Cause I have four other sensors bad aswell.
So I have another sensor further back than this one on my ZJ 2WD trans. What's it for? The ABS system? I'm installing new gauges and was very confused as to which sensor I'm supposed to tap for my speedo.
Well did the install and right after that changed plugs and wires. The transmission solenoids were lots easier. :-) It really helped 1 to 2 and 3 to 4, but 2 to 3 is still not shifting well. RPMs go really high, 3200 - 3500 and then hard shift to 3rd. Any ideas?
Would this speed sensor resolve a P1974 Speed sensor ground error or would it be the wire harness? Additionally, the back up lights do not engage in reverse. I suspect this may be associated. I have a 2001 Grand Cherokee with a 545RFE
Are there 2 speed sensors?? I thought I'd heard mention of 2....but my codes which is OBD1 just says speed sensor problem. My Jeep is a 1995 4.0 6 cyl.
I have a jeep renegade 2015 with what we believe is a bad speed sensor. Is this sensor on the outside of the transmission like the one you show him this video? If so, what is the part number that I need to replace and how easy is it to be done?
is this also called the transmission output sensor? I have a 2006 Jeep WK that is shifting erratically sometimes. Somtimes you can rev the engine over 3000 RPM, and it won't shift from 2nd to 3rd. You let your foot off the gas, and it will shift. Other times, it shifts normally. No transmission fluid leaks.
i would start with the abs sensor see electrical advantage d o t net part# D72436B often that one sensor will cure both of those lights it may address the speedo issue as well , as that is where the signal comes from for the dash display
Hello, I drive a 1994 Jeep GC Laredo with 42RE. Yesterday the o/d off light came on and would not go in to o/d. Just before I parked I noticed that I had only the third gear(guessing based on the rpm and the vehicle speed). After I stopped the tranny is slipping bad and wont engage, did not slip before I stopped. I checked fluid level/condition & looked OK.TCM has an error code 13 for VSS no signal stored. Can a failed VSS cause the tranny to not engage? Is the VSS same as shown in the video.
I have a 545rfe trans on my 05 4.7 ram. It hesitates when being put into gear, but I do have reverse. It shifts fine from first to second but won't shift into or past third. My rpms rev high like I'm in neutral. No leaks and fluid looks good as new. Could this be my problem?
Hey sir i just replaced my 2 solenoids inside the governor and shift solenoid and just replaced this speed output sensor. My jeep still is not behaving right.... it shift into reverse fine amd first gear but i press the gas and i can floor it and the truck moves slowly no repsonse really. Any idea?
My 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee has a bad ouput speed sensor But to replace it appears to be challenging it looks like the transmission mout is blocking my 1" open end wrench from getting to the part your help here would be greatly appreciated thanx.
I have a 1998 Jeep Cherokee 6 cylinder and the transmission takes a while to shift, what could cause it to do that. how can i tell if the transmission is going out.
hello CTP... My abs and brake light are staying turned on. I looked it up and Im replacing the abs speed sensor. will this help, and can you please tell me the difference between the two (output speed sensor) thanks. oh, and my speedometer dosent work under 30mph.
We've replaced the speed sensor & have now realized it's the connector. We purchased an Unassembled one from the dealership & do not know how to go about assembling it, can you help??
I have a 2001 jeep cherokee which seems to run 3 under what it says on the speedometer. Could this be it? Also will I lose all of my tranny fluid when I remove the old sensor? Thanks Rob
Ok, I have a 00 Dodge Durango and I'm looking at buying a transmission off craigslist and one part of the description is "has round electric holes not square". Hilarious I know. Would he talking about the output sensor or is there something else he would be talking about. (Transmission is supposed to be from a 98 dodge(46re))
I have a 2000 dodge grand caravan sport and it was normal until I hit a large puddle of water and now it wont move anymore and it is making a whining noise when I start it and it runs. any ideas?
Im looking to buy a 2001 ram 1500 4x4 auto, all gears shift smooth but feels like its slipping in and out of 4thgear around 60-65, was wondering if this could fix the issue?
+F M- Ali - Hello with the ABS light more than likely its the sensor in the rear diff - we only stock one style of them - you can email us your model info with your request or see the below link to see if it matches your style of sensor 95% this is what you need go to Electrical Advantage period Net then see part # D72436B electricaladvantage.net/moparspeedsensordiffmount.aspx
What does it mean if I unscrew the sensor and transmission fluid starts coming out. Jeez I hope this doesn’t get expensive. If anyone knows please respond thanks
All mechanics I've talked to said that it could very well be this. It's telling computer it's running at different temperature. My truck would never switch into overdrive until it hit a certain temperature. I have changed fluid and filter and added Lucas Transmission Fix.
I have a 1997 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.3 and the transmission shifts hard up/down shifting with codes p0700 transmission control system p1776 solenoid switch valve latched in the LR position p1784 pressure switch circuit :LR I just paid to have the shop put in a new solenoid pack . Did nothing to help but now no codes (still shifts just as hard) What now Please help
i had a p0720 code it said it was output speed sennsor so i replaced it. my truck was still acting the same with the new part so i replaced the governor pressure solenoid along with the transducer.my truck still won't upshift from first it just revs like it neutral i have no idea why its failsafing ,any ideas? the truck is a 97 ram 5.9 2 wheel drive
Yes I did. After replacing nearly everything from the governor pressure solenoid to the transmission speed sensor, I found i had an eroded wire leading to the output speed sensor. Atleast I have all new parts lol
I had a code for my governor pressure but it went away. Now I have a code for my output shaft speed sensor. I haven't checked the incoming voltage, but I did ohm the sensor and it is O/L. Thankfully the O.S.S. on my 99 Ram is only $18. I do believe I'll need to drain the majority of the fluid to change it, so I plan on doing a full oil/filter change at the same time.
I suppose it could , but that would be a first that i have heard of. please feel free to email me through our site with more details , and i will try to help
2000 Dodge Durango 4.7 Check Gauges light comes on and Voltage gauge shoots to 18, I was told this could be the reason Speed Sensor ground could be causing this?? only does it when going 70+ miles per Hr.
