TikTok made me cry! (nearly). I watched some people who had put their coming out on TikTok, and be prepared to feel all the wholesome emotions.

I dragged my dad to a store near where I live and I found a lot of belts and pins with pride flags on them. So ofc I asked my dad if he knew any of them, I was closeted to him both as trans and pan, and he said no but asked me to teach me all of them. He grew up with very christian parents who are not very accepting and I was so scared to tell him I was a part of lgbtq+. So that moment I decided I would come out to him, and I actually did later that day:) now he and my stepmom are helping me to find a therapist to start hormones and said they will help to pay for surgery.

My Catholic grandmother once declared gay men to be unsafe parents, and this year I came out on FB to her and the rest of the family (including 2 nuns). Now, she has seen how LGBTQ+ individuals are treated (and how kind we can be, including a lesbian relative) and says I should be Bi/Agender and live life out with love and kindness, instead of hiding in shame. Whenever I watching coming out stuff I always remember my brother coming out to our parents as straight. To be fair he was the only straight person in our immediate family at the time. It was the most fantastic thing. He took it VERY seriously. We eventually asked why he did it; apparently watching our moms, our sister, and myself come out as some flavor of 'not straight' multiple times over the years made him angry because of some of the reactions we got. He decided that straight people should feel the pressure to come out, too, because equality, and led by example. He helped my daughter set up her coming out party (also straight) a couple of years ago. He is very, very serious about this needing to be a thing. Some people get mad at him for it but, honestly, he feels that equality means equal and if there's pressure on not straights to announce their sexuality for public judgement then the straights should have to do it too.

I actually really enjoy the "I don't care" ones, because I feel like that should be the ultimate goal: that nobody cares about sexual orientation any more, because it isn't important or something anybody else has a say in either way.
@Lisa_Flowers
@Lisa_Flowers 2 года назад
I think those responses make sense in a society where being queer is already seen as normal and is validated in the same capacity as heterosexuality. But we don't live in that society, so saying you don't care can just come across as dismissive, because your kid may not be getting as much validation that their orientation is good and okay from many other places. Like if you're kid is struggling with feeling their queer identity is wrong, they might need validation, not apathy. It can also come across as slightly dismissive when you're kid put a ton of effort into their coming out. Like clearly THEY care, otherwise they wouldn't have baked cakes or filmed videos, so to me saying 'I don't care' comes across like you don't appreciate the effort they put in or how much they clearly care about coming out. I appreciate the parents who clarify that they don't care because they love them either way, or who say it in a way where it is clear that their kid knows that they're accepted. But a lot of these fell into ambiguous territory, so idk, it felt weird. It's also worth pointing out that 'I don't care' can mean a lot of things which is why this response can sometimes be such a weird thing, especially as a viewer who doesn't know these kids and their parents and has no context (for some parental apathy might be the norm lol). Like 'I don't care' can mean you ultimately accept your kid to the point where they don't even need to come out to you, and that you love and support them wholeheartedly. But it can _also_ mean 'I'm uncomfortable talking about this' or the classic homophobic trope of 'I don't need to know who you're having sex with'. Like some parents 'don't care' because queerness makes them uncomfortable and they want to dismiss that part of you. They view it as something negative to tolerate as opposed to something so normal they've already accepted it. That ambiguity to me is why 'I don't care' can be a weird response from an audience perspective. Unless you grow up in a progressive bubble where you can entirely take for granted that your parents are okay with gay people and love you unconditionally, 'I don't care' is so ambiguous it doesn't take the anxiety away. It adds a new anxiety of 'I have no idea what my parents mean by this exactly.'

I don't have a particularly interesting coming out story, but the funniest thing is when I came out to my (rather homophobic) mom. All I told her was that I was part of the LGBT+ group (I didn't/don't think she could understand split attraction and me being asexual/biromantic; heck I dont think she'd understand asexuality at all). But I told her this and her only response was, "Yeah. I'll be honest, I was surprised when you brought home a guy." And I was just so dumbfounded like???? No, I'm the one thats supposed to be surprising you, not the other way around lol. Any way, found out a year and a half later that my boyfriend is actually gender fluid, so I sometimes I have a boyfriend, sometimes I have a girlfriend, and sometimes they're just my partner.

I am asexual demipanromantic and I came out to my dad while he was still homophobic because of Christianity. Luckily, I was able to explain to him that the homophobic verses in the Bible were mistranslated pedophilia verses and he is supportive-ish now. He doesn’t understand that how I can be sex-repulsed and has said numerous times that he “feels bad for” me. The demi and pan parts of my romantic orientation were also difficult to explain to him, but a little easier.

@@shaniastuart349 My mom says the same thing--"feels bad" about me being aroace. And totally doesn't get the agender thing at all. Just imagine what it's like, recognizing these things in yourself after you're 40 and trying to explain it to parents who are literally boomers. At least she isn't a hater, right? And my dad's got dementia, so every time the topic comes up, it's like coming out all over again, so we just say "Never mind" when he asks what we said and move on. I think those of us who have boring non-stories or no stories are definitely the lucky ones, and I am also hopeful like others said that eventually it won't be a thing anyone does anymore. Gender IDs and sex will all just be boring facts that no one will care about until it's truly relevant, like in medical situations or sexual/romantic relationships.

I’m a guy who’s mostly identified as straight. Recently, I’ve been starting to question myself, and I’m starting to think I might be bi. I’m still not sure though, since I still have a preference for women and I still don’t fully know to what extent I’m attracted to men or any other gender. So I might be bi or heteroflexible (roughly, “mostly straight”) or somewhere in between, and I don’t want to be the straight guy who’s forcing himself into LGBT+ spaces by saying that he’s bi when he’s not. If I do eventually decide that I’m bi, I want to come out to my friends and sister first, since I know they’d be fully accepting of me. They’re all cishet (I think) but full allies of the LGBT+ community. After that I’ll want to come out to my parents with my sister’s help. They’re fully accepting of gay people but I don’t know if they understand what bisexuality is, so I’d be a bit more nervous about them. Anyway, I love this channel and it’s wholesomeness and positivity, and it’s really helping me come to terms with my questioning. Bisexuality means any degree of attraction to two(or more) genders. It can be that you like 30% women and 70% men, 50/50, 1/99, 34.66/66.44, etc. Just look around for more terms, if bisexuality doesn't quite feel right! There are plenty of labels, finding the one that fits you best usually feels great, the most important thing is that you're comfortable. Even if that means you'd rather not have a label! Perfectly valid. Sexuality and gender are hard to figure out, just give yourself some time and patience, and research at a pace that isn't overwhelming.

The rest was really accepting (aunts and uncles don't know yet). At first it hurt, but then I got over it and now it's a bummer for them that they feel this way. I'm gonna try to love someone one day and I hopefully won't run away this time because of my trust issues (I was ghosted by 2 seperate best friends overnight at different times) and trauma (first kiss was sxual harassment, but that is NOT the reason I'm also into girls mom). It is hard to think my mom will never be at my wedding and things like that (she's terminally ill from a brain tumor) because if I meet the right woman, maybe she could've changed her mind.

I’ve been in identity crisis for YEARS and you just…knew???” Basically the same thing with my uncles. They were like, “I’m not surprised. I’ve had the thought since you were 12 (I came out at 24 to them)”

On one hand it's really heartwarming, on the other hand I really wish coming out like that didn't need to be a thing anymore, not sure about how others will react :(
@lekiscool

To be honest, its hard to know how to react to people coming out. Especially when the parents are like “yeah and?” XD Like when you are queer affirming and you aren’t surprised. Its almost like “oh cool.” Moves on. Its nice to see that we are at a point where saying “I’m queer” would have the same reaction as someone saying “I’m heterosexual.”

That's the power of propaganda.
@aliceche714

I think that the best way is to say "thank you for sharing this with me, it means a lot, I see that you trust me!" and offer a hug. It shows that you care and the event of coming out is important (it is, if the person desided to do that) It seems not so indifferent like "ok so what... I don't care..." or "I already knew, duh".

I have a mother that does believe teenagers should label themselves because “hormones effect your sexuality”? Which obviously doesn’t make sense because hormones don’t go away- But that means I can’t come out without being told I’m wrong and I’m not that sexuality :D Your videos make me feel accepted, I appreciate your content you’re a good person! Thank You ❤️

It's such a weird excuse. My mom was talking about people my age feeling gay attraction because of changing hormones. I'm 22.
@anonymousgreenbean6825
@anonymousgreenbean6825 3 года назад
My sister told me something similar, that people under 25 shouldn't use labels because they don't know who they are yet and you're just experimenting at a young age so it might not be real.

For anyone that wants a translation of the second TikTok, here you go! "I told my mom that I am bisexual" "It was difficult for me to tell her through conversation" (in smaller text: "I was very nervous") "I thought for a long time about how to tell her." "And it occurred to me to do it like this" (through the sign) And from the looks of it, it went well! Very happy for her 😊

2:36 When that mom suddenly went "Não chora! Por que tá chorando?" my brain got confused for a second, cause that's Brazilian Portuguese, my native language, and I wasn't expecting that, haha! That's means "Don't cry! What are you crying for?", btw

My coming out wasn't positive but my family still loves me. Even so, not having their immediate support took a toll on me and I'm still trying to figure out who I am because of it. I can't imagine how horrible it is for people who ask, "do you still love me?" and the answer is no....

I get that feeling too. But remember that even if you were just confused, there is no shame in that. Just take your time in figuring stuff out. And if you happen to find out you are something else along the way, even just cis, there is no shame in that.
