Val Castor, StormTracker for KWTV News 9, captured this tornado on film on April 26, 1991, and as a result, was hired by Chief Meteorologist Gary England making him the first storm chaser ever hired by the station. Rated an F4, this tornado was on the ground for 66 miles and had a damage path 1500 yards wide at times. The location was 3 E Garber - 5 SE Billings - 9 WNW Pawhuska. Six people were injured in this tornado, however there were no fatalities.

This tornado may have actually been STRONGER than Andover, and it probably would have gotten an F5 rating had it gone through a populated area. It certainly was wider (1,500 yards is almost a mile wide) and stayed on the ground for a longer distance (66 miles vs. 46 for Andover).

I think Enid got hit by a weaker tornado a few weeks prior that was documented by Howard Bluestein and his mobile doppler radar.

This was part of the same outbreak as Andover. Andover, had multiple fatalities, however.

@@ILoveOldTWC I think these two were equal in terms of fatalities: 7 of Andover vs 6 of Red Rock

@ILoveOldTWC 5 лет назад
Wrong. Andover had 13 fatalities. This one had none. 6 INJURIES is what the description says.

I’m surprised I’ve never seen this one before. You know what I notice? In outbreaks, most of the tornadoes have similar shapes and modes, it’s pretty interesting to me, I know it’s because of similar conditions in a given area, there’s so so many ones to watch now, definitely not the days when I was a kid having “Tornado Video Classics” lol, I’m happy they’re on here

The noise you hear isn't from the tornado. VHS camcorders back then were not equipped with any type of wind noise reduction, so just filming outside with a steady breeze had the effect of sounding like a freight train was passing by.

@@gskessingerable Well, in this case, the VHS recorder was being slammed in the face with RFD winds.. so, there's that. 🙄😒

How has it been over 30 years ago?! We could it from our house, but it was so large we didn't realize it was a tornado we were looking at. I was only 10, but I can still remember it vividly. Thank you for sharing these videos. My childhood on a RU-vid channel.

I think this is one of the strongest tornadoes ever recorded....i think it had a wind speed clocked at 286 mph. I've also done some research and found that there was a tornado that struck Poland in the 80s that had a wind speed clocked at 324 mph.....Basically shattering the 318 mph mark set in 1999... I doubt that it's true however
@benhostetter4775
@benhostetter4775 6 лет назад
I think that was 1931 and it was just an estimate, but yeah, I heard about that too lol. It would be interesting if there were actual radar measurements for that tornado.
@MrPapasvhilly
@MrPapasvhilly 4 года назад
I find that lots of tornadoes don't get wind speeds recorded that often or have accurate numbers or are disputed because people or articles have different numbers for the same tornado . I honestly think there has been tornadoes stronger than the 1999 Oklahoma tornado but they occured in different countries or just didn't get a proper wind speed recorded ...the EF5 that struck in Canada Manitoba on Wikipedia tells readers that winds where 260 -320 miles per hour . Isn't that stronger than anything recorded?
@meghandean683
